My Grandfather was named William Gale. He used to have a brick field in the Rochford,Essex area around 1900.
I have heard that he was one of four sons of a sucessful father who ran several buisnesses in my Granfathers youth.
My grandfather was diagnosed with a fatal illness and was given 3 yrs to live while in his early twenties. He sold his interests to his brothers and went to the USA to travel. After three years he was still living but penniless. He returned to Britain and joined the army as an officer in the M.P. After some years in Mesopotamia he rurned to Britain and got married.
I am interested to find out anything relating to him and his family.

I have some information on the Gale family, mostly Woodford as my GG grandfather was George Gale born 1864 who owned that part of the business eventually. I have some of my info on my ancestry tree, but as I did most of the research before I joined, I have more in my own files. Send me a message via the ancestry messaging system.

I've come across this term under "occupation" several times. It may be peculiar to the Chicago area. I thought it might have been mis-understood by the enumerator but it appears the same in different areas of the city and in different decades. Stumped.

Hello Melanie,

Yes it is me. As I explained, I am now semi-retired and keen to pick up the the family tree where I left off.

Like you, I have managed to find the wedding of William Pratt and Ann Turner and my wife and I are hoping to travel up to Warwickshire for a few days to try and access some of the Parish Records. Apparently most of the records are held at the Warwickshire County Records Office, but those for Stratford upon Avon are held by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

I was intrigued to learn that an old school friend of yours is now the vicar of Launcells. Behind me as I am typing this is a copy of a watercolour of Launcells Church that was sold on behalf of their Appeal Fund. Have you visited the grave of James and Elizabeth Pratt in the churchyard? If not, when you do visit you will find it on the north side of the Church. In addition to James and Elizabeth, at the base of the gravestone is a memoriam to their son, Frederick Pratt, (i,e., my grandfather) who went down with his ship at the Battle of Jutland in World War I.

Like you, we have also had problems with our computer. In our case, our previous e-mail address became infected with spam. Unfortunately, our ISP at that time had little or no filtering system and it all ended up at our computer. Albeit our own firewall pushed it into a separate spam box. So unfortunately, you would not have been able to contact us anyway.

If you would prefer to contact me directly, rather than through the Ancestry notice board, I can now be reached at spindriftfdp@yahoo.co.uk.

Regards

Francis (Frank) Pratt

Is that Frank? I'm so glad you got in touch - I lost your e-mail address when my computer crashed a few yeas ago and I had to replace the hard drive.

I haven't done much more research on the Pratts - I found a William Pratt of the right age in the Stratford-upon-Avon records and traced some of his family, but I now think it's probably not him - he seems too well-to-do to be ours.

I did discover that James Pratt's mother, Ann Turner, was also from a brickmaking family near Coventry.

An old schoolfriend of mine is now vicar of Launcells, so I hope to go down and do some investigations at some point, but as I'm now caring full-time for elderly parents, it's been hard to find the time.

Hi Melanie,

I think we may have corresponded before, in repect of Elizabeth Anne Pratt/John Bennett etc.

I am related to the 'Pratt - English brick and tile manufacturers' through Frederick Pratt [born Launcells Tileyard in 1874]. Frederick, my Grandfather, was son to James Pratt, who ran the Tileyard at Launcells, Cornwall.

I started on the family tree some years ago, but pressure of work forced me to put it to one side. I am now semi- retired and am hoping to start working back to William's roots in Warwickshire.

In the meantime, I would also be interested in any information on either of the brick and tileyards at Launcells or Cheriton Bishop.

I will keep you posted on anything that I am able to find out.

My grand father H. Michener Siner inherited a brick yard from his father Horace Michener Siner which was operating probably from the late 1800s until the early 1930s when it went under during the depression. The company was called the H. M. and C. B. Siner Brick Company and my great grandfather was President. I have very little other information. The following link is to an article on the death of my great grandfather in 1929 (and references HM and CB Siner Brick company) in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society: www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1151-2916.1929.t... -
Subscriptions are outrageously expensive, but I imagine that if you could research at the library of an institutional subscriber you could get a lot of info without paying the subscription rate.

Hello,

I am seeking any information whatsoever on English brickmakers called Pratt, their brickworks, methods, employees and families.

My great X 3 grandfather, William Pratt, was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, but moved to Cheriton Bishop in Devon around 1841 and managed the brickworks there until his death. His son, my great x 2 grandfather, managed another brickworks, the Tilery at Red Post, near Launcells, Cornwall, from about 1860 onwards.

I am particularly interested to find out if William came from a brickmaking family in Warwickshire and/or to hear from anyone with ancestors who worked in one of my ancestors' brickworks, but I'd be fascinated to learn anything Pratt- or brick-related!

Hi again

There were four Court Sessions each year, roughly the same as the seasons but with names like Michaelmas and such like.
So the answer to your question is that the earliest that an admission could take place, is in the same year, but after the 21st birthday.
However many did not take up until a later date sometimes several years!

Regards
Terry

I am not an expert in these things but my wifes family have been Freeburgesses (Freemen) since the 17th century.
1:-
As with most things in days gone by, the position of Freeburgess was inherited through the Male line of the family. The holder would be ADMITTED on the first COURT day after he attained the age of 21. If there was no Male line then the Family will no longer have a claim. My brother-in-law is the last to hold the position as his family consists of 3 girls.
Another requirement is that the person claiming entitlement has to live within the boundaries of Colchester. I have tried to find records but since an initial success going back to 1650, I have had no additional info. (That was nearly 30 years ago) and I can't find the original document).
2:-
As far as apprentiships are concerned I believe that they could start from the age of 15 / 18, and last for, usually 7 years.
Good Hunting
Regards
Terry Avis

Ann,

The name McCay does not ring a bell, sorry. My family lived in the area of Broad and Erie Ave., which is north Phila. I know there was a man with the last name of Slaugh, who my gr.grandfather was good friends with. Must of have been good friends, he named his son Edward Slaugh Wible.
Another name I remember hearing was Kelly. This would have been Princess Grace's gr.grandfather I think, Not that there is any relationship, just names I remember hearing in connection with the brick business.
What part of Phila. is your family from? It would be interesting to know, maybe they were neighbors. And if they were all in the brick business they probably at least knew of each other. So I guess - it's nice to meet you!
Let me know if you can think of any stories related to the brick business, and who knows.
Pam

Ann,

Sure wish I had paid more attention when I was a kid! I remember small tid-bits of stories from my grandparents. My gr.grandfather and grandfather were in the brick business. My grandmother was a weaver. As family stories go, she did the weaving for a special cloth, to make the bridal gown of one of the Wannamker girls. Unfortunately that is all I remember. But maybe our ancestors paths crossed.
The architical stone work on the old Wannmaker building in Phila. was the kind of work my grandfather would have done. Interesting!

Pam

John McCay owned and operated a thriving brick business from somewhere in Phila., he lived on Christian St. So. Phila. His son, John J. McCay travelled all over the world, the family tales say, teaching and presenting innovative methods of brick making. Another story says John provided funds to his friend Wannamaker for the building of the center city store. Something happened in John J.'s marriage, he took a second wife (haven't been able to find out what happened to the first!) and father John and he had a falling out. That's pretty much all I have learned to date.

My grandfather's name was Louis Vogt. The lived in Washington D.C. 1901 to 1908 then moved to Corlorado in 1908 and then to Webster City, Iowa in 1914 to 1915 and stayed there till 1933, I am told that they moved around because my grandfather was in the Brick business and I guess they moved where ever he could find work in the Brick Business. What is this business about?

I too have someone listed as a "molder" on a census in Pittsburgh, PA. I wasn't sure what type of form maker he was until, I found him also listed on another census as an "iron molder." With the iron and steel business in Pittsburgh, PA, that made sense. However, when this person then move to an agricultural area of Kansas, and still was listed as a molder, I suspect in that area he worked for one of the railroads making parts. This person also worked for a furniture manufacturer so he may have made "metal beds??" I still have not come to any firm conclusion. But, one way to seek information would be through City Directories. Many times the occupation is given and the actual employer is also listed for the person. Hope that helps !
