Starting a career early 1800s - how?

Does anyone know what training (possibly shore establishments) might have been available for a boy born in the 1790s who wanted a career at sea as a ship's captain - the family not having maritime connections - based in the NE of England (Shields, Newcastle area)? Better still and the long shot of all long shots - are there any surviving archives? My multiple-greats uncle Thomas Simons was b 1794 and became a shipowner by about 1817, trading Newfoundland.

Many thanks
