John D Robinson, b. 1890

I have just started on my wife's family and am looking for information on a John D Robinson, born 6-6-1890, location Unk. Family history says he met his wife (Flora S. Scarborough b. 1891 Ms) in Mississippi and that he was a part of a traveling show. The meeting would have been in 1917 or 1918. First child ,John, was born in 1919 and Flora was known to be single in 1917. Second child was born in Nov, 1921 in Frankfort Ky. In searching the net I've found some info on John Robinson's circus and some on his children/grand-children, but nothing that links.

Any information on a John Robinson born around 1890 with a connection to a traveling show or circus with an unknown marriage will be appreciated.

Hi,
on his Son Philip's Birth Cert. in 1861 in England, my 2xGreat Grandfather George Schilling (B.1825 Frankfurt Am Maine Germany) gave his occupation as Travelling Showman.
Is this occupation connected with Fairgrounds/Circus's?
Is there any way that I can find out what he did and for whom?
On the 1871 Census for Finsbury, London England, he is listed as a 'Dealer in Phither' (I have checked with my local Library and it does say PHITHER) Has anyone any idea what that is?
On the 1881 Census for Manchester, England, his occupation was ' Hawker'. Is this occupation also connected with Fairgrounds/Circus's? or 'Phither'?

Hope someone can help,
Steve

Advice on (Jewish?) German circus family research

Hello! I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than myself can help point me in the right direction. I've done some research on my family and am stuck as to how to approach researching (Jewish?) German circus connections.

I am researching one branch of my family: the Blumenfelds. I believe they are connected to the Circus Blumenfelds, a famous Jewish-German circus family, based on the fact that they share the last name and were circus/music hall artists. I'm assuming they were Jewish, again because of the Blumenfeld name/occupation connection.

Basically, I have:

Simon Blumenfeld, circus/musichall artist (? Germany - 1911 England) --
married to Wilhelmina Blenon (? Germany - 1915 England).
3 children:
1. Baptist Blumenfeld, musichall/vaudeville performer (1868 Braunschweig Germany - 1943 New York);
2. Paul Blumenfeld, ditto (1875 Eulendorf Germany - ? US);
3. William Blumenfeld, ditto (1876 Rentlingen Germany - ? US).

I have a decent amount of data on their time in England (they immigrated sometime in the 1890s) because of English census and birth/marriage/death records. I've found information on their immigration to the US (1910s) due to Ellis Island records, and on their lives in the US due to census and birth/marriage/death records.

However, I'm stuck on how to approach researching the German connection. I do have dates and cities where each of the three brothers were born (I'm assuming different cities because the family travelled with the circus?). How could I find birth records for the brothers, if they were or were not Jewish? I'm guessing that would tell me a lot more than I know now about them, as well as their parents.

Of course, I don't speak German, which doesn't help -- but I am willing to travel to Germany! So any advice on online/mail/in person research in Germany would be much appreciated, as well as any advice on researching Jewish and circus family history.

I have read the recently published academic book that goes into a lot of the Blumenfeld circus family history (Jewish Identities in German Popular Entertainment) but none of my Blumenfelds are mentioned.

Thanks so much!

I am looking for information concerning John Anthony Bevel who, according to family tradition, worked for the John Robinson Circus. John Bevel was born in 1833 in NY. He either worked for them between 1840-1855 or after 1865. He married in Pulaski Co. Va. in 1855, had four children, enlisted in the Civil War, survived the war, but never returned home. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

The Clyde Beatty Circus was also the Shrine Circus. About 1958 a cousin contacted my father in St. Paul Minnesota. My father did not know of this cousin. My father did say that this cousin had all of the "old people" correct. This cousin worked with the elephants but was not a performer. The baby elephant's name was Virginia. That I can remember. I believe that this cousin was descended from George Roe/Rowe born in Ontario. In the late 50's this cousin was at least 20 but could have been in his 30's.

I don't know how to even begin a search.

Looking for information on William Scott (born 1846), alleged to be brother of Walter Scott equestrian and circus owner. Walter married Rebecca Freeman and his daughter Elizabeth married Edwin Hannaford and took the Scotts circus to America. Also looking for information on the court case between the Scott family and the Hannafords in the early 1900's over the ownership of the circus. I have seen the Hannaford web site and EMailed them but they were unable to give me any details other than those already on the site. I am interested in any information on the Scotts circus.

Hello to those involved. My grandmother was Florence Scott, daughter of William/Mary(nee Wallser). She was one of 6...Mary(Polly) who I gather married Ben Freeman, ? anyone know when?, Elizabeth who went to South Africa and who's family are beautifully described by one of her nephews who visited Durban whilst in the navy in the war years.... I have the letter. Amelia who married a longshoreman/fisherman and went to live in Southwold, Wlliam who I believe was in the navy, next came my grandmother and last Blanche who married Henry Harris of Bonnybridge(Picture Palace) and died in 1926.

I spoke briefly on the phone to Ann Barber this year. Would like to follow up with anyone who knows:
1)Whether James Scott, equestrian, was the father of Walter and William....I understand that there were originally several brothers in that generation.
2)When/where Mary got married to Ben Freeman.
3)Date William ( my gt. grandfather) died
4) Why Elizabeth went to S. Africa.
can anyone help?

Anne Stevens

Looking for info on grandmother, Violet Emma Hofer Roop, who was a bareback rider with Ringling sometime between 1904 - 1916. She also was in a highwire act. I believe her nickname was "Vi." Her husband, Bernis (Bernie) Roop, was a coronet player in the circus band. In 1909 they had a daughter while on tour in Jersey City, NJ; who was referred to as "Baby Vi." They were both from Ohio, Dayton area, and settled there in 1916 when her costumes and his coronet were lost in a flood. She died two years later in the influenza epidemic. Her descendants have never seen photos of her because a stepmother burned them. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Pictures of the boys and their family can be seen on the Fannin County, Texas genweb site at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txfannin/ashcraft.html

John Robinson genealogy

Hi Folks: My mother and father were both Robinson's from seperate lines. My mother's side involved the John Robinson Circus. Her family was living in Evansville IN when she was young and said she always got to go to the circus when it was near because her father could get free tickets anytime he wanted them. She knew the circus folks were family but never knew what relationship it was. Her family migration was from NY to PA (before 1858) to OH (before 1885) to IN. (before 1896) None of the known family was involved with the circus. This would have been during the mid 1920' to early 1930's that she was going to the circus.
I can find a zillion references to the John Robinson Circus and to many of the people that worked for it but nothing about the genealogy of the original John Robinson.
I am at a brick wall on her branch at Steven Grant Robinson (supposedly born NY) 9JAN1838 - 23FEB1918 married Isabella Jane Minnick 15APR1841 - 11MAY1926 Their son, my ggrandfather, Francis Marion Robinson was born in York County PA 28OCT1858 - 22JAN1929 buried Martin County IN. Isabella was Amish and she and Steven were disowned by both of their families for marrying.Their burial sites are unknown.
My mother (80) has a vague and undocumented recollection that Steven's father may have been named John. The name John Robinson in NY state is as common as fleas on a scruffy dog... :-)

He was a stilt walker and clown in the uk late 1800's they immigrated to Australia 1900's, his wife was Maude Phillips or could have been Maude Griffith she was a dancer and preformed in vaudeville at the same time and venue as Charlie Chaplin. I believe my grandfather worked for a Circus called Fossetts (spelling may be wrong) His father was funny frank clown I think. Any info would be great.

About a year ago a local businessman loaned the Bozeman Public Library large posters depicting Montana Frank and his Wild West Shows for a display in our Montana Room. The owner has no information about Montana Frank. Google does mention a Montana Frank and his famous Miles City round-up 1910 poster. We would like to find more historical information about him, especially where he was in Montana. We receive many questions about the background of the posters from our patrons.

I appreciate receiving any information, leads, or ideas to pursue.

Mary Ann Childs
Assistant Librarian/Interlibrary Loans
Bozeman Public Library
626 E Main Street
Bozeman MT 59715

(406) 582-2414
mchilds@bozeman.net

Hello

I would like to know if somebody could PLEASE help me? I have NO knowledge whatsoever of how to find my ancestor in this circus for genelogy purposes- and perhpas somebody with more experience than I would be able to help me out?

My 2x Great Aunt SUSAN (GOSINE) MITCHELL (daughter of OLIVER & ANNA (ALBRO) GOSCINE born ca: 1890/1900 most probably in either Genesee County, MI or Clare county, MI was said to have "run off with a circus"- and we have no further info on her. What I DO know about her is that she was said to have "married a MITCHELL at a young age and run off with the circus."

Subsequent info from a related family member has provided me with alittle additional info: an ALBRO family member has told me that they knew there was some connection to the BAILEY's of BARNUM & BAILEY.....but they did no know HOW the connection happened until I mentioned SUSAN (GOSINE) MITCHELL.

Additionally; SUSAN (GOSINE) MITCHELL's niece ANNA MARIE ("MARIE") BEEMER married a FRED BAILEY ca: 1920/30's in Shiawassee County, MI; and they travelled extensively- as FRED BAILEY was a 'big game hunter". They lived in Alaska for a short period of time, too. MARIE settled in Harrison, Clare County, MI after FRED BAILEY's death.

Questions:

1) HOW would I find info about SUSAN (GOSINE) MITCHELL in the circus? Barnum & Bailey claim to have LIMITED genealogical resources; and require hiring a circus genealogist for $60.00/hour!

2) Does anybody know if FRED BAILEY was truly related to the BAILEY family of BARNUM & BAILEY fame? The only other info I have about him is that i THINK his Mother's name may have been ELSIE.........and apparently, they were from Clare County, MI, too

Would appreciate any help/info/direction anybody would be so kind as to provide!

please e-mail: elhzm@comcast.net

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Granddaughter looking for information regarding my Grandfather Leon Wilkinson who was involved with a circus in LaGrande, Oregon in the 1920s. The exact year and name of the circus has been lost over time. As the story goes, my Grandfather Leon (who's nickname was Poncho), might have been working for the circus, we're not sure. He was an excellent horseman. My Wilkinson family had a large ranch in Union, Oregon. As the story goes, Leon brought a couple of performers to meet his Uncle Jim Rundall, in Cove. They stayed a couple of days. After this incident, Leon disappeared from family records. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Richards/Richards Brothers Circus and Traveling Show

Seeking information on a family business started by Andrew Jackson RICHARDS with his wife Susan SUMMERLIN and continued by a few of his 10 children; Henry Birdo RICHARDS, Wesley CISCO RICHARDS, Franco G. RICHARDS, Minnie Ola RICHARDS PARKER, others (?).
It is likely that the Circus acts began in Arkansas or another Southern state in the early 1880's. There are family ties in Georgia where the performances were given. It is said that the show traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada finally making it's winter home in Bandera County Texas in the early 1900s. The business encompassed four gensrations of RICHARDS family.
All information is welcome and I am happy to share what is known.

Circus in Petrzalka, Slovakia in 1920's & 30's

I found out after he died that my father grew up as part of a circus. It was situated on the banks of the Danube River in what is now known as Petrzalka, a suberb of Bratlislava. Back then it was called Engerau. My grandmother, Auguste Hehal and my grandfather, Stefan Rieger, ran the carnival. However, they both disappeared during World War II. I'm not sure if they were Sinti gypsies and so died at the hands of the Nazis or if they were Germans who died at the hands of the communists. There was also some speculation that they were deported to Siberia. The circus was originally owned by Anton and Cecelia Hehal (my great grandparents) in the early 1900's. I am trying to find out details of that circus because I'm writing a biography of my father's life and wanted to include the details of the living and working in a circus like that in the 1920's and 1930's. If anyone has any information or resources for me, I'd be most appreciative. - Thank you, Carla

The Barlow Brothers Circus - Wheeler Family (1904)

On page 185 of the May-June 1987 issue of "The Genealogical Helper" magazine, there is a wonderful photo of the Barlow Brothers Circus Wheeler Family. The five members (six, if you count the little performing dog), are pictured in costume with folded arms across their chests. The submitter said that her grandparents owned a small circus which toured mostly through the midwest. It was called "Barlow Brothes" which was the maiden name of her grandfather's mother.

Deborah DeCostello stunt flying........Ethel Dare/Margie Hobbs?

I'm searching for information about a woman who jumped (to her death) from a stunt plane at a fair in Empire MI 1920. She was flying in a plane with this on it's side---> Ethel Dare the Flying Witch. I know that there was a woman named Margie Hobbs who had that name of Ethel Dare, but I found she left flying after she was banned from flying in 1920. The poster for the fair in 1920, Empire, MI said the Tinney Flyers hired Deborah DeCostello for stunt flying. The local Empire Area buried Deborah in 1920, after raising money from local people to bury her. No relatives or friends came to her funeral. I'm hoping to fill in some information about Deborah DeCostello as the local, Empire Museum has no information about her family or where she came from. No one came to claim her body and she is buried in the local Catholic Cemetery in Empire. Please mail me any clues you may have, as I am clueless. I had thought at one time that Deborah and Ethel Dare (Margie Hobbs) could be the same person. The information I found on Margie Hobbs said she returned to trapeze and vaudeville after she was fired (1920) from Tinney Flyers. She was fired because Myron L. Tinney tryed to duplicate her daring wingwalking feats and died trying. The next day she repeated her wing walking feat and was fired. Any information about Margie or Deborah DeCostello would be greatly appreciated.
Charles "Tex" Harrison and a lady snake charmer in 1950's ?

I am searching for any information on Charles A. Harrison-I was told Tex or WHOPPER Charlie was names he used--not sure what he did in the circus or perhaps carnival. He supposedly met Gloria Nichols in Syracuse,New York around 1952. They both worked for the circus/carnival. Gloria may have used the name June Logan, she supposedly was a snake charmer. They were not legally married but told everyone they were, Gloria had several children throughout their travels--one was a boy born in 1953 named Eddie, another child born in 1955 a girl, was left with family in Madison County Ky, never returning for her--that child left behind is my mother. I am searching for any information on my grandparents. I dont know if the information on Charles is correct, but I know Gloria's information is correct because my mother was reunited with Eddie that was born in 1953. Gloria passed away in 2003 in New York, before we found Eddie, and he doesn't know too much about his mother either for he was but in a foster home in New York. I would love just to know who my grandfather was, and what he did. We are not judgmental, My mother is an amazing woman, and a great mom that truly loves everyone, but she has this void in her life not knowing who her parents were. Anyone with any information please contact me!!! My email address is smhsally@yahoo.com. Thanks to all who reads this and may god bless.

Hagenbeck-Wallace wreckage

Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus
Benjamin Wallace, a livery stable owner from Peru, Indiana, and his business partner, James Anderson, bought a circus in 1884 and created "The Great Wallace Show". Wallace bought out his partner in 1890 and formed the "B. E. Wallace Circus".

In 1907, Wallace purchased the Carl Hagenbeck Circus and merged it with his circus. The circus became known as the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus at that time, even though Karl Hagenbach protested. He sued to prohibit the use of his name but lost in court.

In 1913, the circus lost 8 elephants, 21 lions and tigers and 8 performing horses in the Wabash River flood. That same year, Wallace sold his interest in the circus to Ed Ballard of French Lick, Indiana.

One of the worst circus train wrecks in U.S. history occurred just before 4:00 AM on June 22, 1918, when a locomotive engineer fell asleep and ran his empty troop train into the rear of the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus train near Hammond, Indiana. A fire broke out from the kerosene lamps, which were used for lighting in the sleeper cars of the circus train. The fire quickly spread through the wood-constructed cars. As a result of the collision and subsequent fire, 86 persons died and another 127 were injured. Many victims were burned beyond recognition. Most are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois in a section set aside as Showmen's Rest.

In the spirit of "the show must go on," several competing circuses, including Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey, lent equipment and performers to Hagenbeck-Wallace so that only two performances were canceled as a result of the tragedy, the one in Hammond and the next stop in Monroe, Wisconsin. After the tragedy, circus entrepreneurs Jeremiah Mugivan and Bert Bowers acquired Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, adding it to a long list of circuses they owned, includfing Sells-Floto Circus and John Robinson Shows. Mugivan was the chief operations man. A year later, Mugivan and Bowers asked Ballard to join them and the trio formed the American Circus Company.

The successor company of the American Circus Company was sold by Jeremiah Mugivan, Bert Bowers and Ed Ballard to John Ringling of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey in 1929 for $2 million, along with the Al G. Barnes Amusement Co., Sells-Floto Circus Co., John Robinson Shows, and Sparks Circus Co. With that acquisition, Ringling controlled virtually every travelling circus in America.

The Great Depression and Ringling's ill health caused the Ringling empire to falter. In 1935, the circus split from Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey and became the Hagenbeck-Wallace and Forepaugh-Sells Bros. Circus. It finally ceased operations in 1938.

The building in Peru, Indiana that formerly housed the winter home of Hagenbeck-Wallace now serves as the home of the Circus Hall of Fame.

This article is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License (GNU FDL).
Most Unusual Jones Family History

This is the story we got from GrGrpa Elec Jones with some info provided by my husband's mom. He was born in San Antonio, Texas. He didn't know his actual birthdate so he chose 1/1/1876. His father's name was Frank or Henry. His father owned a livery stable on a street behind the Alamo. Two cowboys came to the stable and an argument ensued. His father was killed in the argument. His mother; either Mary or Martha took his sisters (names unknown) and returned to her people (rumored to be Comanche). He and his brother became seperated and he never saw him again. He joined the Tx. 1st Cav in the Span-Amer War. He didn't know his last name so he used the same last name as the guy in front of him ... Jones. However, on his military records he lists a Andy Jones in Sherman, Tx. as who to notify in case of an emergency. His military records show he was born in St. Louis. He married Ella Olive Lewis from E. St. Louis. Her dad was Robert or Frank Lewis. Her mom was Hannah or Hanora Robbins. She had two brothers ... possibly Fred and Frank. Elec and Ella had Doris, Evelyn and Lenora. Elic and Edna worked in the circus and vaudeville across the country but Chicago, IL is most mentioned. Ella's stage name was Bonny (Bonnie?) LaTour. They supposedly were in the major circus train wreck that occured and also in a circus fire in Florida. In their show they had three monkeys (chimps) named Mags, Dinty Moore and uh (drat .. I forget the 3rd one). The monkeys babysat Lenora. About 1926 they came to Texas. Elec was a trader for a time with the Alabama-Coushatta and Leonora remembers a playmate named Baptiste from the reservation. I do not have the info at hand as to when Ella passed away but Elec passed away in Houston, Tx. on 1/17/51. He had been working at the stage entrance at the Houston Coliseum. His nickname was Doc.
I swear .... it's exactly what we were told. If anyone sees anything familiar or can make any connection with anything in this story we would be most grateful.

Circus in Australia around 1856

My great, great grandfather Ernest Reineke travelled with a circus band in Australia in 1856.

The Family story goes that he travelled out from Germany with the circus, but it may have been a circus from somewhere else or he may have even joined one here. There has been some mention of Wirths’ Circus over the years, but I think Wirths’ Circus weren’t formed until 1882 which is too late.

I’m trying to find out what circuses would have been travelling the world, especially to or in Australia between 1856 and 1871. Ernest arrived in Melbourne aboard the ‘South Carolina’ and travelled throughout Queensland and NSW.
Kard-O also known as Howard Bone - which circus did he work for?

Looking for anyone out there who may have known Howard Bone or worked with him. Possibly went by Kard-O. He did side show magic acts. Per his stories and accounts of his 40 years on show business he worked from everything from canvasman to barker. I believe he may have been affiliated with Ring Bros at one time though I am not sure. I do know he met and married my mother Betty Acton who was a Bally girl through the circus. They lived together as approved through a circus marriage as husband and wife before they were legally married in Aug 1960. They married in Shawneetown, IL. I do not know which circus's they were affiliated with. Howard and BEtty divorced and by 1963 Betty was living in Eustis, Florida with her parents. Her family was originally from Buffalo, New York. Though I am his daughter, I was raised by his sister in Evansville, IN and did not get to know the workings of circus life. Howard also practiced martial arts- Itto Ryu Jutsu and received an award for 9th level black belt in the Eastern Arts Society. I am particularly interested in his circus and carnival career but would love to hear stories of any part of his colorful life. If anyone out there has any information regarding him or knows him personally please e-mail me at Linnie731@insightbb.com. Thanks!

Howard Bone

I am trying to locate any information on Howard Bone (his full name was John Howard Stephen Bone) whom I know traveled from one carny to another. He was born 02/13/1926 and died 04/26/1927. He pronounced himself a magician by trade. I aso know he worked in various aspects of the trade. Including but probably not limited to barker, ringmaster, canvasman, snake handler, walked on glass, boxer in At shows. He also had a strong history in martial Arts. He married a girl (Betty Mae Acton) in 1960 who was also a performer. I believe she may have been his assistant in some side show acts. Perhaps having to do with an electrical shock chair, or having been strapped to a wheel and spun around with knives thrown at her. I know one of his tricks also involved a prop of a wooden box in which a person got inside and knives were inserted, though most of his stunts that I was aware of invoved card tricks or breaking out of rope bonds. Betty & Howards marriage was short lived as she dropped out of the circus life to return to her parents home in Florida. Howard was origially from Evansville, IN and I know has been throughout the US and Canada performing. In fact I am pretty sure he was at time linked up with shows in Peru, IN and in Florida. I also know he was in NY, PA, OH, AL, CA, NM, TX just o name a few. Prior to his circus career which I believe to have begun around the early or mid 1940's he had served time in the Navy during wartime. He was medically discharged in 1944 although I do not know the medical reason. Also he was inducted into the American Museum of Magic in 1994 for his stunt "The Man Who Can't Be Hung". I also know he was at least at one pont associated with a clown named Emmet Kelley. His entire adult life was devoted to circus's, carnivals and side shows, though he claimed to have become interested with magic when he was a young boy in boyscouts. Even when he was not with a show he would make a living on the side freelanceing in magic. If anyone knows this man or has any information please email me at Linnie731@insightbb.com. I am his daughter. Thanks

Mid West Circus-1920-1945

The family story is that great grampa David William Watkins went to register for the draft in 1918(WWI) and joined the circus instead. He never returned home. However among the things passed along to my husband when his mother died was a wedding ring that very well could have been his great grandfathers. The initials on the ring are the same and the date December 4,1913 would be the same. My husband's birthday is also Dec. 4. My mother-in-law is the one who started the story about the circus and I feel she knew much more than she let on. She had contact with the man in the 40's. Her husband and David William's only son died as result of injuries suffered at the Battle of the Bulge. While with the circus David William went by the nick name "Doc" If any one reads this and remembers or has heard of this man I would love to have more information about him. He was originally from Hillsdale Michigan. Born in 1892 he was raised by his aunt and uncle as his mother died shortly after he was born. He married at age 21 and had two children, then he vanished. I figure he traveled with the small circus troups that were prevelent in the mid west during that time. I doubt he joined the big circus although his wife was a very distant relative of PT Barnum.

His first wife, Beatrice Langford, was part of his act. He might have been with the Mighty Haag Circus or Ringling Bros & Barnum & Bailey. I'm figuring he was with the circus sometime between 1892-1917. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me with my search.

Edward B. Smith - Circus Performer

My grandfather was Edward Bernard (or Berner) Smith and he was born around 1890 either in New Jersey, or Buffalo, NY. His parents were both killed in a train crash on route to the New Jersey Shore circa 1893. Some time later he ran away from his adoptive family and joined Barnum & Bailey Circus as a water boy, maybe in or around Buffalo. As he grew up with the circus he learned to perform as a trapeze artist (catcher), tightrope walker, sword swallower, fire eater and juggler. He was also self taught on 6 musical instruments. He was very young when his parents died and he never really remembered if his name was from birth, an adoptive name, or one the circus people gave him. At a later time (early 1900’s) the story is that he worked as a cowboy roping cattle in the off season (perhaps when Barnum & Bailey returned to the US and headed west). When he left the circus he went into Vaudeville with a partner, but the name of their act has long been forgotten. My mother said her father was very strong with dark features, and taught her to walk a tightrope when she was a child. He also used to juggle milk bottles in the kitchen. He died in 1946 and I have no pictures or written information about his circus days. I’m hoping I can find his name on a listing of performers with Barnum & Bailey or even learn more about the circus when he was there. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information or suggestions on how I might learn about his early life. Thank you. Kathy McCullough, New Jersey.

Hi.

I inherited a photo of "Frances-Francis Half-Woman Half-Man", which depicts a person who appears to be a woman on the left side of the body, and a man on the right side of the body. Other notations on the picture are "As Woman" and "As Man" on the respective left and right sides.

This was done by PhotoColor Studios and, although it is absent the customary markings of a postcard on the reverse, appears to be about that size. I'm assuming this is a souvenier photo, but wondered if anyone might have information on this performer.

Family legend has always stated that my gfather was an elephant trainer with the circus. He use to tell stories about a trainwreck where the elephants had him pinned and would not let help get to him. In looking at pics of circus train wrecks I believe I have located him with the Wallace Circus that had a train wreck in Durand Michigan 7 Aug. 1903. Does anyone have any idea of where I could get a handle on employees of this circus in this timeframe, or any other info. All ideas would be most appreciated.
Thank you all in advance.

Robinson Brothers photo Iowa

Hi. I have any old photo showing three young men who appear to be relatively tall. They are dressed identically in long buttoned cooats with fringed epaulets on the shoulders, and each is holding a white/light-colored hat that looks somewhat like a hard helmet worn by soldiers with more of a heightened bell shape.

On the back of the photo is written "Robinson Bros Iowa Green(s)? [or Green 05] Height 8" and the next line reads "19, 21, & 24" which could possibly be the ages of these young men.

I inherited this photo along with other family photos and unknown photos, and wondered if anyone might be able to shed some light on who these gentlemen might be.

Thanks for your help.

Kellie Robinson

I believe that these were all circus people but I'm not sure what circus. It may have been Hagen, Beck and Wallace .. or some combination of that; or I believe that Robbins had his own show for awhile. It is actually Winona Robbins and Ray Anders that I need information on. Winona's mother's name was Matilda and she had a brother; Milton A who died in Charleston, SC.

Doc Jones, Bonnie LaTour, Ella Lewis, Hagen Circus

I am looking for info on Hannah (unsure of spelling) Robbins or Robins and any connecting lines. Our info is very sketchy. She was probably from the E. St. Louis area. We believe that she died in 1939 at the age of 47 in Illinois. She married a Lewis .. possibly Robert or Frank. She had at least one daughter who's name we think was Ella Olive. She possibly had at least two sons .. Fred and / or Frank. We believe that Ella Olive became an entertainer and performed in vaudeville and at circus' under the stage name of Bonnie or Bonny LaTour. She may have been with the Hagen Back
( Bach ? ) and Wallace circus and may have been on the train with that show during the fire in Florida in 1927. Ella married Seth ?, Alexander ? Alex or Elec Doc Jones (altho this name could be a stage or fictitious name). Ella had two daughters, Evelyn and Lenora and at least one son Jessie. If you have any info or any suggestions as to where I might check it would be appreciated.

She was probably born in Maryborough about 1877 & was in Sydney by 1899. She was of Scottish descent.
I have searched QLD & NSW bdm to no avail.
Slim information, but I'm an optimist.
Regards, Vicki.

Seek info re Fat Lady Barnum & Bailey 1958-59

I am helping an adoptee find information about her birthmother. The adoptee was born in Los Angeles County on 9/16/59 with the name of Edna Marie King. The birthmother's maiden name is listed as Ginn, but we don't know if that's the name she used at the time. A source previously told the adoptee that the birthmother was beloved by all who knew her and died in about 1974. The adoptee was supposed to call this gentleman back (who seemed very moved to hear from her), but she only recalls his initials as being S.S. Any help anyone could give me in finding out who this "fat lady" was would be much appreciated. The birthfather was said to have been a maintenance/repair man with the circus at the time. Thanks to anyone for any help you can provide.
