I would suggest that Deownes might be "The Downs" - the stretch of water between the South and North Foreland off Deal. A very important place for sailing ships to wait for the right wind to take them into the Channel or round the North Foreland into the Thames as well as being a sort of parking place for ships leaving Chatham. No proof but in the absence of anything better - might be worth enquiring.
