Nicholas James, who never used the name Nicholas if he could help it was born on 18th Oct. 1839 in Devonport. At the age of 13 yrs and 6 months he entered the RN as Boy 2nd class on HMS Impregnable, a training ship anchored in the Tamar (15.2.1854)
On the 11th August 1866 Nicholas left the Navy and entered the Coast Guard Service. He began on the lowest grade of "boatman" He gradually made his way up the ladder:-
1870 Commissioned boatman
1873 Chief boatman
1878 Chief Officer of C.G.
He was stationed at Kings Lynn and Hob Hole, Lerwick and Peterhead, Burntisland, Greenock, Lamlash (on Arran) and eventualy and finally Penzance.
He died at Beaumont Road, Plymouth on 23rd October 1926 at the age of 87
