Hi, I have been following this thread from time to time with interest as our family too had ancestors involved with the Coastguard at Sennen Cove in West Cornwall, but information is sketchy so if anyone following the Hugh Pill thread has come across info on the Morrissey/Morrison family I would be most interested.

Matthew Morrissey who seemed to change his name to Morrison and his wife Ellen Sullivan have come from Ireland (County Cork) to work in southern England--his occupation noted as Coastguard. Another researcher of this family had long thought there was an Irish ancestral connection and it was questioning of an aged relative which brought to light a memory of the name Morrison, & that he was a Coastguard at Sennon Cove in west Cornwall who was awarded a gallantry medal.

Matthew was by occupation a Coastguard, and was stationed at Portsmouth in Hampshire when son John, who later came to Australia & married, was born. John (b May 1830 Gosport, Hampshire, England) apparently had an older brother, Sylvester born Oct 1857 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, (later in Queen's Navy and served on 'HMS Superb 1842'), an older sister, Ellen who I believe was born & deceased in Kerry, Killarney 1821 before the family came to England, and younger sisters, Isabella b 1832 & Elen Agnes as well as a younger brother, William. We do not know of any other children.

Sylvester Morrissey (oldest son of Matthew & Ellen) married an Ellen Whelton and their first daughter, also Ellen Morricy/Morrison married a James George, a fisherman of Sennen Cove, & a Marriage Cert has been found re that union. This couple had a daughter Cordelia, son Edward, daughters Ellen & Isabella, son James Silvester, daughter Mary Ellen.

A search in Wikipedia for 'HMS Superb 1842' on which Silvester (son of Matthew & Ellen) served should give info on the ship and an early photograph taken on board (not of Silvester unfortunately). www.pbenyon.plus.com and www.pdavis.nl can be searched to find details of most of the ships listed on Silvester's Service Record. The Morrison family apparently lived in Collingwood Rd, Portsmouth and photographs of this road are apparently available. A son of Silvester & Ellen, James Silvester, died 23 Dec 1881 at 35 Collingwood Rd, Portsea but unfortunately No.35 has apparently been demolished to make way for new flats. Silvester and Ellen died at 27 Brompton Road.
Some information re Re Silvester's family can be found in Coastguard Index & that information has been taken from Census records - 1871 & 1881 for Silvester and 1851 for Matthew.

If anyone interested in the Hugh Pill thread has an interest too in the other coastguard men of this area of southern England and/or has come across info on the Morrissey/Morrison family that could assist me further with my research, I would be most grateful.
