Hugh Pill was born in Gorran in 1789 There is a doubt about his parentage as his mother might have been well iontpo her 40s if she is the right woman. but my mum was 40 when i was born and her mum was 40 when she was born so the 40s dont seem to ber a proble,m Hugh is my gt gt grandfather
He was at Bembridge Isle of White in about 1816 then in Lowestoft in 1822 before transfer to Sennen Cove where he served until he retired He married Sarah St Andrew . Family tradition says her father was a mariner , St Andrew of Brittany. We have no proof of this but I was really thrilled when I found the records at Boldre in the New Forest. Another tradition is that Hugh was at Trafalgar. I have not proved this. I do know that there was a John Pill an Able Seaman on HMS Victory.I have seen the Trafalgar muster at Kew,. He lived long enough to claim a Trafalgar medal in the 1840s. He was listed as a prest man and a Cornishman.
