Glass Makers St Helens Lancashire

I would be interested in any information about my Henderson ancestors who hailed from the Northeast - Durham and Newcastle, who moved to work as glassmakers in Walton on the Hill in Liverpool (Crown glass making?), then moved to St Helens and briefly to West Bromwich where the family are found in the 1851 census living on Spon Lane. There was an innovative factory here pioneering the manufacture of sheet glass and at this time they were making the huge panes of glass for the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition. Any information about Robert Henderson (b1814)as a glass maker, John Henderson (b1840)who was later a glass painter in Manchester, Edward Henderson (b1850) glassmaker or David Griffin Henderson or information relating to the movement of workers to West Bromwich from St Helens to work on the Crystal Palace would be most wecome.

Storm family glass manufacturers, l800's - early 1900's

Family tradition was that my Storm immigrants from Elberfeldt in Prussia (1849) were glass blowers. They came to Philadelphia, some of them stayed in the NE and worked in the glass mfg business there & in NY. Christian Storm, sons Francis & Christian & Gustavus were this family. I have discovered other Storms - Ferdinand, Augustus, another Gustavus (probably son of Francis) and a Conrad who were connected to the glass industry. In the 1920 census Gustavus A. says he is a "maker of scientific glass". Elberfeldt (now Wuppertal, Germany) was an industrial area. Would like to hear from others with info about them.

Stiebel - St. Louis, Missouri

I am researching Eugene Stiebel. He immigrated to Pittsburgh around 1860, where he married Katherine Kurth (brother George, a glass blower) and then settled in St. Louis, Missouri. He was from the Alsace Lorraine area originally. I'd love to share any information I have on descendents, and am looking for ancestors or a place of origin, etc. The Kurths were also from Alsace Lorraine and immigrated about the same time, but may have been in Iowa for a short time. The parents of Katherine and George were Phillip and Kathernine (nee Kurtz).

Glass Bender

A branch of my family was involved in the making of glass in London in the mid-1800s. On census returns they are variously described as "glass cutter", "glass grinder" or "glass bender". I have found job definitions for cutters and grinders...but what exactly was entailed in "bending"? In an old trade directory I found a category for "Glass Benders and Stainers". Why would those two operations be linked together, I wonder? Was it just another term for glass blowing?

If anyone can give me an explanation of exactly what a glass bender did, I would be very grateful.

Ann Rains

Hi,

I am looking for some information on a Glass Manufacturer by the name of Thomas Stock. On the 1841 census he is listed as a glass manufacturer, and was staying that night on a farm with his farmer brother in Thurston-le-Moors in Cheshire. He next pops up in his brothers will in 1846 as executor. This time he is listed as a glass manufacturer located in Liverpool.

I have not found him on the 1851 census. from the census documents it appears that he was born around 1800, not in the county of Cheshire. His younger brother Edward was born in Cheshire and had a farm at Ness.

I have been trying without luck to find out info about the glass manufactuers of Liverpool without any luck.

ROBERTSON, YOUNG, & DAVIS of Montreal and Illinois 1880-1920

I am tracking several family members who are listed on either the Canadian or US census as glassblowers or moulders. Does anyone know of why in particular a glassblower would move between Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Madison/St.Clair Counties of Illinois?
In particular George Henry Young (b:1878 in Montreal to George Young & both glassblowers according to 1901 Canadian census)moves to Belleville St. clair Co., Illinois circa 1904 and marries Grace Eleanor Robertson. She is the daughter to Andrew E. Robertson (b:abt.1864 and a glassblower in Alton, Madison Co. on 1880 US census & then in Belleville St. Clair Co. on 1900 & 1910 census). George H. Young moves back to Canada with his new wife and then back to Belleville in time to show up on the 1910 census living with his father-in-law Andrew. The following year he and family are back in Canada in time for the 1911 census!!
Was there a manufacturer with branches in both cities?
I have found the name of several glass companies in Montreal but no reference to a similiar company in Illinois.
Any ideas?
George's son Gilbert then marries Mary, the daughter of a man named James Davis in Montreal in the 1930s. James Davis is listed as a moulder on the 1911 census.
Sure would appreciate any help finding resources to explain George's movements.
Best regards,
Joyce

Stadler's in NJ - Glassblowers

I was wondering if there is any way of tracking down which glass factory someone worked at? My Great-grandfather, Gustav Stadler, came to US from Germany in 1881. He was a glassblower as was my Grandfather, Herman Stadler. They lived in the Bridgeton area of NJ. Herman ended up in Western NY. I remember as a small child seeing some glass paperweights at my Aunt Claire's house that one or both of them had made them. I have a 1 inch tall orange pitcher with a blue handle that Herman made. He died in the 40's. Afeter Claire died in 1967, I don't know what happened to the glass pieces. Any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks.

Lisa Stadler Balcom

Andre(s), Andris, etc

There is a well known glassmaking family with the surname
ANDRE, ANDRES, ANDRIS, ANDREAS and probably a few other versions I have yet to come across.

This family was located all over Germany and France. Had stays in England and some settled in the US as well.

I am trying to help solve a puzzle about how some of the members of this family connect. If you have any relations to this family please contact me. I would love to share what I have and see how it connects into what you might have.

My great father and his father, glassblowers in NJ

I'm wondering about my great grandfather, William Dilks and his father Josiah Dilks, both were glassblowers in New Jersey. Born in 1846 and 1810 respectively, it would be neat to get some examples of the types of glass that they made.
Thanks for any help.!@!

Whitefriars glassworks - Seal

Does anyone know anything of this company during the time of ownership by the Seal family? Captain Anthony Seal bought the company in 1733, his son Anthony ran it after his death in 1750 until he too died in 1757. It finally left the family around 1763.
Anybody know anything of these Seals, or their origins in Old Swinford, Worcestershire?

Farmer's Glassworks in Clarksburg, MA

I'm looing for any information on the Farmer's Glassworks in Clarksburg, MA in business about 1814.
I researching the Pratt & Aldrich families & these 2 names are attached to this business. My Ebenezer Pratt was b. in Clarksburg but I have little information as to what he did for a living. I also can't find the parents of either of his wives, Sarah Aldredg & Lydia Aldrich.
I'm hoping to connect these 2 people through this business if possible.
Thanks, Priscilla

Welcome to the Glass and Crystal Makers Family Board

Welcome to the Glass and Crystal Makers Board. This board is set up to research the families who have ancestors that were glass or crystal makers in any country. We know that glass and crystal making families moved all over the world and often married into other glass and crystal making families. I have many glass and crystal makers in my family. These were from the Alsace, Lorraine, and Moselle areas of France / Germany. Some of these families also went to England and to the United States. There are famous glass cna crystal making families throughout the world. Please post queries about the families you are trying to find. Laura, your message board administrator.
