My information is that Sewall Atherton died February 1, 1941, presumably from natural causes and not a mining accident. He is buried at Wild Rose Cemetery, Thompson Falls, Sanders County, Montana.

Whether the others you name are related I'm not sure.

Doug

I lost track of Sewall after he left Arizona for Montana. I didn't know about the second marriage to Anna Victoria. Would be interested in learning what you know about the marriage and names of children and descendants. Please reply by private email to sagetrout@aol.com.

Thanks,
Doug

I know he was married to an Anna Victoria Atherton (don't know her maiden name), after his wife committed suicide and before he married my great-grandmother. But I couldn't find any dates for their marriage or any subsequent marriages? Did you run across any information in your research?

My great-grandmother, Leonora Robbins Mitchell Snodderly, married a man by the name of Sewall T. Atherton in Potrerillos, Chile sometime between 1929 and 1936. He was her third husband. He was an engineer who was working for the Anaconda Copper Company, out of Butte, Montana. There was a copper mine there in the Atacama Desert, which is where he met and married my great-grandmother. According to family history he had previously worked in Russia, where he married a woman to help her get out of Russia.
He died on Feb. 1, 1941 and is buried in Thompson Falls, Montana, in Wild Rose Cemetery.
My mother may have his passport. She remembers him fondly. She was a teenager when he died.
Lynn Guarch-Pardo
Looking for a needle in a haystack here. Looking for information on Janie Brown born about 1940. The information I have says that she was married, possibly to a Hispanic, and lived in the Silverbell Mining area near Tucson, Arizona. I have been told that she may have died of cancer shortly after marriage. Her parents were James Elmer Brown and Pearl Brown (Jones). SIblings include: Jean, Joanne, Sandra, and Leroy.
If anyone knows anything about her, or other family members, please reply.

Thanks for your post and I'll look into the resources.

I've found out a lot about Sewell (Sewall) T. Atherton since I originally posted my first message. He wasn't in silver mining, but instead he was a shift boss at the Shannon Reduction Works in Clifton, AZ.

In Feb 1909, his wife Emma Morgan committed suicide in Clifton. Their young daughter, Frances Elizabeth, was taken in by grandparents in Phoenix.

What became of Sewell after that time is a mystery. He does not appear on the 1910 census in Clifton, and based on probate records, his daughter last saw him around 1912, even though he owned property in Phoenix next to the grandparents. He simply vanished, and his whereabouts remains a mystery I would like to solve.

Thanks, Doug Atherton

Hi

Arizona became a territory in 1863. First territorial capital was in Prescott. The Ajo mining region was always part of Pima county since the 1860's. Tucson has always been the county seat. Marriage records should be found at the office of the clerk of the Superior Court in Tucson.

Ajo Copper News began publishing its mining camp weekly in 1916. Back issues prior to the early 1930's are not available locally due to a fire at that time. The Arizona state archives are supposed to have a set.

"Ajo" is an unusual name for a community as it is Spanish for
"garlic". Here the indians once used the green and red rocks for paint, which is "au-aho" in their tongue. Spanish changed it from its original pronunciation to a similar word.
Ajo, Arizona is not a source of garlic, rather a source of copper and iron paint colored rocks.

In the years 1910-1912 the Calumet and Arizona mining company began to buy up mining claism and organize the
development of the low grade copper ore. By 1916 an all out effort was made to create a then modern open pit copper mine.

You may want to research back issues of the Arizona Daily Star and other territorial newspapers for Dan Taylor's passing.
The University of Arizona (Tucson) has quite a collection on microfiche.

What about marriage records in particular and records when Ajo and AZ were parts of the New Mexico territory?

The 1912 date of beginning of Calument activity is interesting. About that time Dan would have sold out.

Also he died 10/12/1917 in Virginia. He may have had an obituary in an Ajo area paper some time after.

By any chance is there an Ajo, New Mexico or Ajo, Mexico?

Hi

1910 census of Ajo resulted in 50 people being counted as the Ajo mines were not profitable with existing technology.
By 1912 there was a change when the Calument and Arizona mining company began their activities. The Ajo musuem has two pay sheets with list of names from that year.

Your relative may have been involved with the Gunsight silver mine about fifteen miles to the east, southeast of "Old Ajo".
Gunsight was active in the 1870's and 1880's, perhaps as late as 1892. While the museum has some mining equipment from Gunsight, it does not have any records to my knowledge, but you are welcome to take a look.
There were and are a number of mines in the area, but again I refer you to the Arizona State government records.

The museum has a telephone directory collection, the earliest dated 1941, of the Ajo area.
Also it has a collection of obituaries of those buried in the Ajo cemetery. Some of those gravesites go back to 1916, the year "Old Ajo" was moved a mile north away from the diggings to the present day site of the community.

Hi
I am a volunteer at the Ajo Historical Society's museum.
While we have a bit of information about local residents, present day Ajo was not created until 1916. Formerly there was an "old Ajo" mining camp a mile to the south of present location. It is gone as is a nearby ghost town called Clarkston/Rowood.
For many years Ajo has had a Justice of the Peace, but permanent records would be at the county seat, Tucson, as Ajo has never been an incorporated community.
Mining claims may be found with the state offices in Phoenix.

Our museum is volunteer run and is open from October to May. People who wish to visit it during other months may contact any of the members for a private tour.

More information about Ajo may be found through various links at the Ajo Copper News website.

Hope this helps ,
GJ Walters

Searching for Dan Taylor in mining Az between 1870 to 1915

Any info on how or where to go about searching mining claims, tax recs and marriage recs for the late 1800s, early 1900s in vicinity of Ajo much appreciated. Reference to personal knowledge, newspapers, libraries, books, laws, courthouses anything like that. Please don't hesitate. I understand now Pima is the county and Tuscon is county-seat but has that always been the case?
Sewall Atherton - Silver Mining

I am searching for a Sewall Atherton born in Butler Co Ohio in the 1870-1880 timeframe and traveled west to be in the silver mining business.

I don't knoiw what regions of Arizona were big in silver mining in the very late 1800's and early 1900's, so not sure where to look for him. Are there any websites someone could recommend to find histories of miners or people that worked in silver mining?

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Doug Atherton
