Classification: Death
Surnames: Herdes, Hardis
I found the information on Bernhard Herdes in 2013. (his name had been spelled wrong) I had really given up when I just stumbled upon it. The lesson? Don't give up.
Illinois Dept. of Mines and Minerals:
February 16, 1891, Bernard Hardis, miner, a married man, had his skull fractured at No. 1 mine of the Star coal Co., at Coal City; the roof had taken a heavy break through the night, bringing down all the undermined coal, with a portion of the roof also; the partner of the deceased, on entering the room, noticed that this rock was dangerous and went to work on the other side of the room: being a little late in getting to his work, the deceased commenced right under this rock without examining its condition, and before his partner could warn him, it came down and caught him; he lived only ten minutes after the accident.
