1894February 6. - Peter Makela was seriously injured in the 42nd level south of No.4 shaft Quincy mine. Makela and his partner John Lukenen while charging a hole he (Makela) tried to force a stick of dynamite into a hole with an iron-tamping bar which caused an explosion. Makela's skull was fractured and both of his eyes were also badly injured. Lukunen was not in range of the blast and escaped uninjured.

1896Sep23, Herman Lukanen, Osceola Mine, Houghton Co., MI, occupation drill boy, accident was fall of hanging, nationality Finnish. (The record does not clearly state that he was killed, but usually these type of accidents are fatal)
