I am having trouble with my great grand father Robert Muir. He was born in Swinehill (now Swinhill), Dalserf, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 15 Mar 1875 to James and Margaret (Semple) Muir. In 1886 he was living with his mother with her parents in the same place he was born. In 1887 they arrived in Philadelphia.
In 1896 he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in Livingston County, Illinois. In 1900 in Livingston with his mother and siblings. In 1902 he married Ida Mae Riggin in Collinsville, Madison, Illinois. They had two children and she died in 1909. In 1910 Robert is living with his two children in O'Fallon, St Clair, Illinois.
About 1912 he marries Elizabeth Fausz and they have 4 children. All are born in Illinois except one, who is born in Virginia in 1920. I have his original social security card, which was issued in 1936 and it says he is working for a mine in Iaeger, McDowell, West Virginia. I have his original coal miner's certificate issued by the West Virginia Department of Mines dated 1942. It also indicates he is living in Iaeger, McDowell, West Virginia.
Later he bought some property by a river in Van Buren County, Tennessee and ran a fishing camp. He died there in 1956.
I cannot find him in the 1920, 1930 or 1940 census. I cannot find his second wife and their children in the 1920 census but can find them in 1930 and 1940. They are back in Illinois and she says she is divorced. In 1940 their oldest son is living in Tazewell County, Virginia.
Robert Muir was a coal miner all his working life. His daughter by his first wife (my grandmother) always said the was a union agitator and the mine owners would black ball him, refuse him work, and send their private detectives after him.
Anyone have any suggestions about what to do next?
