My husbands ancestors came from Ayrshire Scotland to work in the mines of West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania in the mid 1800's. The family of Michael Muir and Janet Montgomery came to the US to work. Daughters and their husbands came also (Gallaugher and McKelvie). I was just curious if there was an all out recruiting effort on the part of the mines to import coal miners from Scotland. It seems most went on to acquire land and become farmers leaving coal mining behind them. Thank you. My husbands Muir family is listed in RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project. Search for Michael Muir and you will find two sources, ours and one submitted by Richard Gess, which is more complete.
