No, I'm afraid I can't Nancy.
I didn't get the information from the ancestry site, but from microfilm, many years ago in a dusty record office!
I have looked to try and find the record concerned on ancestry, but its not there.
In case you have other means of finding records, the entry is on the baptism of one of his sons - details :-
Thomas Wiltshire, baptised 7 July 1850 at St Matthew, Bethnal Green (London or Middlesex) Parents Thomas & Maria (or Ann Maria as she sometimes called herself). They were living at Princes Court at the time. A year later, on the 1851 Census Thomas gives his occuptaion as 'Chemical Light Maker' so I suspect that this Borgure is something to do with that - perhaps?
regards..

That's an interesting question. At first I was thinking an addresser was simply a clerk who wrote addresses on official documents. But an "addressor" is someone who "addresses" letters of credit, also. That would mean handling financial transactions, either money promised to the people you mentioned (Hutchinson, Clinton, etc.), or money they promised to others. Talk to someone in the banking business and they might be able to help. Also, Gov. Hutchinson's financial records and correspondence may be archived somewhere, and may be indexed; they should provide clues.

A "man of coat-armour" in medieval times would have been a squire, or armor-bearer to a knight. Later it seems to have meant someone who was entitled to his own coat of arms.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armiger

I think by 1873, this term probably meant "gentleman"; i.e. "doesn't have to work for a living."

From Webster's Third New International Dictionary:

DOFF (noun) = the act of removing material from a textile-manufacturing machine; also: material so removed.

DOFF (verb) = to remove (material) from a textile-manufacturing machine <~full bobbins from a spinning frame><~cotton from a carding frame>

DOFFER (noun) =
1a: a small roller usu. covered with wire teeth used to strip material from another roller or cylinder on textile machinery; esp.: a roller on a carding machine
1b: a machine or device for doffing bobbins
1c: a device for stripping cotton from the spindle of a mechanical cotton picker
2: a textile worker who removes full bobbins or cones from machines and puts in empty ones

From these definitions and the fact that your ancestor was located in Georgia, I would guess that he or she was working for a cotton mill or cotton-picking operation.

Check the occupations of the other residents enumerated on the census pages surrounding your ancestor; they may give you more clues.

My grandfather worked there most of his life. He met my grandmother there. I don't know when he started but he told me stories of his hours being cut during the Great Depression but he still had his job. He met my grandmother around 1942 or so and they arrived in 1944. He worked until they shut down. He lived two blocks away on Encinal ave. his name was James Steve's. my grandmother was known as Dorothy Souza. When was your picture taken? I was a chid in the 1970's. but always amazed when my grandfather told e he could tell what was inside each chocolate by the design on the top of each piece. He was a candy maker. :)

In colonial times, what is an "addresser"?

For once the internet has let me down! I cannot for the life of me find an answer to this question. I have several people in my tree that have the following phrases in their bio-sketches:
--He was an "Addresser of letters for Gov. Hutchinson of Massachusetts".
--He was in 1780, an addresser of Sir Henry Clinton.
--He was an Addresser of Gage in 1775, and in 1776 he was at Halifax.
So what exactly *is* an Addresser? Is it an occupation or job title? A governmental appointment? A public office?
If I were to add these things as events in a profile, what would I call them? I would really appreciate anny help I can get on this.

Thanks in advance!
C L Carl

What date are you talking about? When FDR introduced his plans for getting people back to work during the great depression in the 1930s one of the things was an army of people (young men) who worked in national forests. Not sure of the details but I think some of these were called "Conservation Army" or something similar. Might be worth approaching it from that angle if it was at that time. There is a modern "Conservation Army" which is an anti-poaching organisation to protect wild animals - again, not sure of the details but that would obviously not be yours.

My husband's grandfather was listed as a Laffer in the Typewriter industry in NY on the 1940 census. I'm not finding any information on what a laffer actually might have done in this industry. I wonder if the term might have been mis-spelled, or misunderstood, or simply mangled if perhaps grand-dad may still have had some leftover remnants of his parent's german or other european accent.

Imogene and Gracie are both "Operator, Shirt Factory" and they are lines 31 and 32.

It sometimes helps to read the image by turning it into a negative and then enlarging.

Your welcome. Glad to help. I ran across this forum by accident and read some of the questions. There is some interesting reading about past occupations.

You are welcome Bill. Before I read your message I thought, On No, you found out that your ancestor was the guy who split open the bags of hops or barley at the local brewery and that is why they called him a "grainer". Just a little Philly humor. Philly was a huge industrial town for more than 200 years and there are a lot of obscure trades and skilled workman who did only one segment of a job that you might never see anywhere else. I was glad to be of help.

my great grandfather was a founding member of the Society of American Magicians who knew Houdini. He was of Baltimore Maryland in the 1920's and his name was Arthur Morris Cowan (Mr. A.M.). He and his brother (who i know almost nothing about) were both magicians and had some international acclaim (they were not from the states originally). I have more information on my great grandfather from the Society of American Magician's historian and I have a few photos too, including a crumbling pic of him from one of his show posters. It's super cool.

As for directories, I've not yet found one and am looking myself for the same (for more information on Mr. A.M.). Any news you uncover would be greatly appreciated.

Janet,
Following your message, I tried a few googles in an attempt to find out if the word "Teamowners" would bring up anything. ...Two items on a list that came up do mention it. On the list is a post made on Roots Web - Anglesey, and another on Roots Web - Merseyside.

The google I used was: Horses - Team Owners, Liverpool, 1911.

You are right, it is to do with teams of horses, and the word Teamster shows up there as well.

My grandfather might have been grabbing employment as a cashier at any job he saw available. But on the other hand, he could have been placed (by his brother) with a company near the docks for a reason, maybe to do with goods coming off ships, and that would be where the Teamsters come into it.

Thanks for your help. I've heard the word Teamsters used in American gangster pictures but never quite knew what it meant.
Brian

I read this as Cashier - Forwarding Agent & Teamowner. Could it be that he was a cashier for a company that forwarded goods ie collected goods from the docks for the next part of the journey. Teamowner possibly meaning the company owned teams of horses for delivery vans. Am I right in thinking teamsters in America are lorry/truckdrivers (originally drivers of horsedrawn wagons)?

Just a though.

Janet

I also saw it as Tramowners for a while, but because he worked consistently in offices as a Cashier or Accountant, I doubted if it could be right.

I will try some googles about trams at the Liverpool docks area. It is still a definite possibility. Thanks for that.
Brian

I took a close look at the handwritten word and I thought it could be TRAMOWNERS as in owners or operators of sort of tram. Because the man may have worked near the docks this might have to do with the equipment used to move loads on and off of ships. Its just a guess but I know how extra eyes can sometimes help.

My grandfather was a Cashier and Accountant most of his life and moved from Scotland to Liverpool and then back to Glasgow again. I am trying to discover if his job around 1911 was anything to to with shipping. (His brother was into this in Glasgow, and I wondered if he was in Liverpool as a shipping agent for him.)

He is listed on the 1911 census at Egremont, Liverpool as being a "Cashier - Forwarding Agent Teamowners" - or is it Seamowners? (On the printed version of the census, it says Seamowners.) DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT TEAMOWNERS OR SEAMOWNERS MEANS? I have no idea what he was working at, just that he was living near Liverpool docks.

If it is SEAMOWNERS - what does that mean?

Brian

My uncle was a marine fireman. He died in 1928 and we can find absolutely nothing on him.We wondered if he died on board a ship or under fire or something? Can't find his death listed anywhere or in any state. Only a family genealogy book mentions his death and no one is left alive to tell us what happened to him.
Can anyone advise me where to look for death records on him?
His name was William Franklin Kinsey, born 1881 in Franklin County, VA and supposedly died in March 1928. He had been stationed in Norfolk,Va when he got his WWI draft card. It shows profession as "marine fireman" .That would be c.1918. There are no other records on him.
Thanks sincerely to anyone who can help!!
Shelley
