What is the name of this railroad. I believe Ihad two ancestors who worked on it. One is in a Toledo Directory in 1889 and 1890. The other would have been in the early 1900's--but I am not sure this was his railway. How many railroads went through Toledo? He may have worked there retiring just after 1936--so it is important that I know the name of his railroad if I can ask for pension information.

Engine and Seventeen Freight Cars Dropped into the River

Columbus, O, Aug. 15 (1892) -- A serious freight wreck occurred on the Columbus, Hocking Valley & Toledo railroad Friday night. As northbound freight No. 63 was passing over a bridge, near Logan, the timbers gave way. The engine had just left the bridge when the timbers caught the cab, carrying it with the tank and seventeen cars, to the river below.

Uriah Brown, engineer, was badly cut about the head and body; Walter Harris, brakeman, severe cut on forehead; Fred Morehead, fireman, bad bruises and broken arm. The injured men all live at Logan, where they were taken. A tramp who escaped says his partner is under the wreck. A wrecking train has been sent to the scene.

-- Marion Daily Star, August 15, 1892
Thomas EVANS, Brakeman, Hocking Valley RR, 1910

From the Thursday, September 1, 1910 edition of the Marion Daily Star:

Thomas Evans Dead in Falling From Train - A Hocking Valley Brakeman Meets Sudden Death - A Marion Resident Highly Esteemed - Accident Occurs at Fostoria and Little is Known as to Details - Evans was Last Seen Signalling With His Lantern, and Is Found Unconscious

Thomas Evans, aged thirty-two years, a brakeman on the Hocking Valley railroad, who resides at No. 577 North Prospect Street, was almost instantly killed at Fostoria, in falling from his train shortly before 9 o'clock, Wednesday evening (August 31, 1910). The remains were brought to this city this afternoon and taken to the home.

Evans was riding on No. 19, which lays over at Fostoria every other night, and last evening he was in the north yards at Fostoria, where the train was being placed on a siding for the night. He was seen with his lantern by Conductor Thomas Matthews flagging the Big Four passenger train, arriving there at that time. According to information received here, he was flagging his own train, but according to the authorities at Fostoria, he was flagging the Big Four. Little is known of the accident, except that he was seen with his lantern and was later found along the side of the tracks, and it was supposed that he had fallen from the train.

After being found, Evans was given attention by his fellows, but he died before surgeons had arrived on the scene. He neck was broken, and a bad contusion was suffered on the face.

Evans was one of the best known brakemen on the road, and was highly esteemed in this city, where he has resided for a number of years. Wednesday morning he left his home to go to work in the best of spirits.

His wife survives him, and is almost distracted with grief. There are no children. Funeral services have not yet been arranged.

Holmes Co. RRs

I have not been able to find any history on the RR in Holmes Co. My greatgrandfather supposedly helped build the RR in that part of Ohio. He was a foreman because he could both speak and write Gaelic, thus being able to communicate with the newly arrived Irish laborers.

He married in 1867, and appeared on the 1870, 1880 census, as well as the 1884 enumeration for Holmes County. He had a brother or cousin who was also on the 1860, 1870 census, and the 1850 census for Wayne County, so it's possible he was in Ohio prior to his marriage.

I know that the B&O had a branch line to Wooster, but that seems far to go to work each day. Also, I can't verify what year(s) that line was built.

Does anyone have knowledge of what RR (s) was/were built in Holmes County, especially in NW in/near Washington Twp in the years 1860-1870?

I'm looking for any sort of railroad record that may mention clerks for the years 1875-1886. He worked for a railroad that went out of/through Toledo from about 1875 until his death at 33 in December 1885. I know this isn't much information, but if anyone knows of a website or book that may include this type of information I'd appreciate it.

I have in my records that an ancestor "Tillman Howard" died in a train wreck at Ashtubula in 1873. He died in October. I have read about the 1876 train wreck, but not one in 1873.

Would there have been another wreck in 1873? If not, is there somewhere to find a list of those that died in the 1876 wreck?

Thanks,
Rebecca

Looking for information about the murder of Annabel McGarvin Yeater/Yater. She was murdered by a group of people who forced her into their buggy. They stole everything she had including her clothes. She was left half on/half off the railroad tracks either before she was dead or after. This occurred sometime around 1916 in or near Adena when she was walking home from work. If you know which RR ran through that area or have heard of this murder please let me know. She was born in the Mt. Pleasant area in a coal miner's camp.

Murder on train in early April 1908

I am trying to find any validity to a family story that has been handed down for a couple of generations.
My Great Grandfather, Irving Cox, was supposedly killed during a botched robbery while working for the railroad as an undercover guard (or something of that nature).
I have an article about his death that claims he committed suicide after being layed off from work at a glass factory. A number of things don't add up in that article that can support this idea. The only census that he can show up in is the 1900 one and he isn't employed due to age.
I have been told that several years ago (probably anywhere from mid 60's to 80's) there was another family member that tried to get the information about his death, but all records have been sealed. No other explanation was given.
Is there someone that can lead me to any train incident that happened in early April of 1908?
Thanks....

Chicago Junction was renamed Willard, Ohio in 1917

The railroad town of Willard, Huron County, Ohio was founded in 1874, and originally named Chicago Junction. The name was changed in 1917 in honor of Daniel Willard, the president of the B&O Railroad. I find this name change important when trying to find death records of relatives who work for the railroad in this area.
My railroad surnames for this area are Green, Campbell, Beebe. My great grandfather Oscar Scott Beebe came from Genesee County, Michigan to Chicago Junction, Ohio while working for the railroad. He met my great grandmother Catherine Blanche Hillis when he stopped at a well on her parent's property to get a drink of water for his crew. They married in 1897 in Huron co., Ohio.
