WILLIAM POOR, the young express rider who was killed lately about 15 miles from Wellington Station, Nevada, by the convicts who escaped from the Penitentiary in that State, was lately a resident of this city, worked on some of the river boats, and also on the Stockton and Copperopolis
Railroad. He has a father and mother residing in Aurora. The following is a dispatch, dated at Virginia, Sept. 30th:
“W.F. WILLINGS received a later dispatch from his agent, H.H. BILLINGS, stating that the remains of POOR were found about half a mile below Sulphur Springs, some yards west of the road, shot in the head. POOR was a young man much respected by all who knew him, and had but recently engaged to WILSON to ride the pony express, being on his first trip when killed.
The people are so incensed in Aurora and the surrounding country that it is thought they will hang the convicts on the nearest tree. This is the party who killed Wells, Fargo & Co.’s agent and an Indian, and are unquestionably the most desperate among those who escaped.â€
FROM NEVADA; Carson, Oct. 2 -- A few days ago the officers arrested MORTON and BLACK, 2 escaped convicts, and severely wounded young ROBERTS in Round valley. The officers turned NORTON and BLACK over to 2 ranchers living
in the valley and started in pursuit of ROBERTS, and took him after 2 days’ chase and returned with him to the place they had left the other 2, but could find no trace of them. It is supposed they were lynched by parties living near, as the feeling against them is very strong on account of the killing of William POOR, the pony rider. The officers are expected here
tomorrow with 2 convicts, BIGELOW and McCUE, caught near Placerville.
FROM Nevada -- Carson; Oct. 5 --
-A gentleman from Columbus, who arrived at Aurora this afternoon, states that officers who are on the track of JONES and BURKE, found the dead body of JONES in an old cabin in Fish Lake valley. COCKERELL, who has not been heard of since the break, seems to have joined BURKE and JONES near Round Valley, and it is supposed that the 3 had a quarrel between themselves and JONES was killed. The officers are after BURKE and COCKERELL.
-It is now certain that MORTON and BLACK were lynched in Round Valley. Young ROBERT’s is so badly wounded that it is thought he cannot live.
-Robert DEDMAN, the brave prisoner who so nobly fought to stop the break at the State Prison on the 17th of Sept., and to protect the lives of Lieutenant Gov. DENVER and family, was yesterday pardoned and restored to citizenship by the Board of Pardon Commissioners.
-Officer HARRIS, of Rocklin (Cal.), is expected here in the morning with a prisoner supposed to be Thomas FLYNN, one of the escaped convicts who was captured near Rocklin.
