one armed cowboy...Shady Woods

Am looking for help finding information on George Earl Woods, aka, Shady Clark b. 13, Mar. 1887. He had a hook on his right arm. Rumor is that he was in silent cowboy movies and maybe traveled over seas with a wild west show. He was originally from TX, lived in CA in the 1920 census and listed as an 'actor'. Any help with ole Shady would be appreciated. We haven't a clue as to the name of the movies he was in or when he died...

Thurkel (Turk) Greenough Red Lodge, Montana cowboy 1930's

My father gave me a 1931 scrapbook that has newspaper clippings of the time concerning cowboys and the rodeos. This article was in the scrapbook with a picture of Turk Greenough age 36.

Sally's, Hubby-to-be Already Has a Wife

Los Angeles(UP) Mrs. Helen Greenough said Friday the handsome cowboy to whom Fan Dancer Sally Rand is engaged is her husband.

She said she married Thurkel (Turk) Greenough in Red Lodge, Mont., on April 5, 1933, and lived with him until last June. He is a prfessional bronc rider.

Mrs. Greenough, pretty and frail, consulted Attorney Lewis A. Schaffer.

"How can he marry that fan dancer if he's married to me?" she asked. "Turk and I were married in Red Lodge, and I went with him everywhere. We use to come out here so Turk could ride in the movies."

She said she had received two letters from him, from Montana. One informed her he was 'in love with someone else." She said he told her they could not be happy because she disliked living on a ranch.

Miss Rand announced from Kentucky Wednesday she intended to marry Greenough and "live on his ranch." She added, however, she would continue her fan and bubble dancing.

Mrs. Greenough said the dancer met her husband in 1935 at a rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyo.

"Turk, won the prize, and afterward she came running up to him to get his autograph," she told her attorney. "It's just the glamour of the rodeo business that gets 'em. These society women just get attracted to cowboys.

Mrs. Greenough indicated she would be willing to give her husband a divorce if he would make finacial provisions for her.
PROCASCO

Hi,

Someone on a mailing list sent out a notice about this new board. Back in my line there is a family story about a woman with the surname of PROCASCO who supposedly went out west and performed in a wild west show. A 'distant cousin' in FL says her family has the gun she used. I will have to dig deep into my scattered records to see if I have any further info but thought I'd post this much for now.

By the way, the surname PROCASCO gets really 'butchered' when it comes to all the ways it was spelled in records!!!

Thanks,
Elizabeth

Gt. Gt .Uncle in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show

I am searching for information on Daniel Flower Brown, (my grt. grt. Uncle) born 30th May 1870 in Bristol, UK. He left home in 1884/5 and according to the family story, worked on cattle boats prior to travelling to the Canada/USA where he is reputed to have joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

He then lived with Indians, (he may have been captured by them) and had his face marked in their fashion. Unfortunately I do not know which tribe this was and do not know how to find out.

Following this he worked as a Lasso man / bareback rider in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, travelling to UK with them in 1891. He visited his family in Bristol then, but was never heard from after that although I understand he may have married a Spanish lady. I have wondered whether he joined the Wild West Show together with the Indians he was living with at the time.

I was told this story as a small child and would dearly love to learn more about his life and discover whether he has any descendants so I could fill in the gaps about Dan in my family history.

Any information would be very much appreciated, if only a suggestion as to where I could look next. I believe I have traced him as far as Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1885.

Johnnie Mullens, Rodeo Hall of Fame

What a neat idea for a web site! My husband's Great-uncle, Johnnie Mullins --Johnnie changed the spelling of the family name for show business--was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City during the 1970's, while he was still living. (Uncle Johnnie used to claim that the inductors were tired of waiting around for him to die!)

Johnnie was born in Granbury, Hood County, TX; died at the age of 93 in 1978; helped found the Calgary Stampede in Canada; organized rodeo shows and took them to Madison Square Garden during his prime; and was a working cowboy until he fell off his horse at the age of 87. He broke several bones; so the Green Ranch, for whom he was working near Prescott, AZ, finally told him that he HAD to retire!

My husband's grandfather, Johnnie's oldest brother, Ed, taught Johnnie to cowboy on the ranch where Ed was foreman near Wagoner, OK, when Johnnie was only 14. Johnnie had been sent there to get him out of the hair of their recently widowed mother in Granbury! We are going to attend the NGS Conference in Nashville in early June and will be stopping in Oklahoma City and in Wagoner on the return trip.
