Certificate of Examination

I have a "Certificate of Examination" dated in 1886 for my great grandfather Merton Harry Sawdey issued by the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railway. It states "...that he is not disqualified ... by color blindness, nor other defective sight or hearing." His position (filled in on the form) looks like "N. Operator". His newspaper obituary gives his position with the Nickel Plate as a telegrapher. I believe he was working for the Nickel Plate in Lorain, Ohio in March 1890.
What does the "N." in "N. Operator" stand for?
Thank you for any help you can offer.
