Captain John N. Pritchard, Newburyport, MA.

First, I would like to say how thrilled I am that a list regarding New England Seafarers has been created. The information being shared by everyone is interesting, informative and so much fun to read!
My seafaring ancestor was Captain John Nash Pritchard of Newburyport, MA. Born in 1833, and starting at about the age of 12, he worked his way up through the ranks from cabin boy to master and owner of merchant ships. I consider myself very fortunate to have a quite detailed chronicle that he wrote about his seafaring days, and from that I have taken the names of these ships:
Cabin boy: Brig Massachusetts
Ship Versailles
Ship Scotland
Ship Emerald
Seaman: Ship Celestial
Ship Contest
Ship Carrington
Chief Officer: Ship Volent (Stephen Bray, Master)
Ship Josiah L. Hale
Ship Keystone
Ship Elizabeth Cushing
Master: Brig Trenton
Ship Gem of the Ocean
Ship Montana
Ship Lucy S. Wills
Bark Benjamin F. Hunt, jr.
I would be very interested to know if anyone else has come across these ships in their research and am more than happy to share what information I have. Best Regards, Susan

I am looking for anyone with information of the crew of the Middlesex of Boston that sailed from New Orleans and Galveston Tx.

My GG-grandfather Joseph Vickers "commenced aboard the ship Middleton [sic] of Boston about 1945" - We believe this ship was the Middlesex of Boston - a passenger ship.

Joseph Vickers was about 11 when an uncle took him to sea.

What would a boy of 11 do aboard such a ship and how do I go about finding out about the crew and maybe who the uncle was.

We do not know anything about the parents of Joseph other than the mother was from Louisana and the father from France?? Joseph was an only child from what we understand. Born 10 July 1834, Galveston, Texas.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all.

Captain Green(e),Yarmouth,Mass.,1775

My ancestor,John Green(e),and his brothers Robert and(unknown) lived in Boston in the 1700s, and either bought a schooner or brought one to Yarmouth,MA in 1775. Don't know schooner name. They were Quakers, and traded on their schooner from Boston through Nova Scotia(which then included nearby provinces) to Placentia,Newfoundland. There is supposed to be a record of their schooner at Yarmouth in 1775.Anyone know how I can find it ?(I'm in Australia so can't go personally.)
Robert Green(e) was briefly on USA side in Revolution, then he and John returned permanently to Placentia,Newfoundland about late 1778. John, fervent Quaker, tried to stay out of whole thing. John's descendants from early 1800s started returning to Boston, until today there'd be many thousands in USA.
I'd like any information anyone has on this family(Point Verde Greenes of Nfld.)and of course anyone in USA descended from them. The clan is huge,so if your ancestry has any connection to Placentia,Nfld.,please contact me.
Especially of course seeking information on Yarmouth schooner, and the descendants of the brother(and anoy other relative) who remained behind in 1778 era.Thanks.Ward.wardgreene@hotmail.com

His father in-law and brother in-law also called themselves "boatsmen'. I believe Edward Hammond was also a tugboat captain.
I am researching my gg-grandfather Archibald Campbell who was born in Bath, Maine in 1826. What is the best way to find out information on a specific sailor, or their family? Any leads are greatly appreciated.
He was second mate on the ship International captained by David Brown of Provincetown, MA. This ship looks to have been built in 1851 by Clement Littlefield at Kennebunk, Maine and possibly operated in the white star line. I know that he sailed on it from Liverpool, England in Feb 1853.

Letter of Marque

I am trying to determine whether an ancestor, of the name William Rhodes, of Burrillville, RI, was in fact a Privateer. My understanding is that they would carry a Letter of Marque from the government to be able to establish this status, and would have to post a Privateer's Bond. The information I'm going on is rather sketchy (from History of Burrillville, RI):

"William Rhodes was also among the early inhabitants of the town. Possessed of no worldly wealth, he learned the trade of a cooper, and subsequently removed to the West Indies and engaged in his occupation as cooper. He afterwards became engaged in navigation, and fitting out a privateer, he intercepted many English vessels laden with sugar, molasses, &c. He became quite wealthy, and at Providence the wharves were often covered with his merchandise; and he used to remark, that he was so 'rich that he didn't care for John Brown and Nightingale, nor the d----l.' He purchased large tracts of land in and about Harrisville, then called Rhodesville, and also owned a store in South Carolina, whither he used to journey to look after his interests and to make new purchases."

Any thoughts on where to look for a Bond or the Letter of Marque?

Thanks,

Mark Webb

Cmdr. Daniel Holloway ( -1811) of the sloop "Venus" in 1765

I am interested in finding more information about Daniel Holloway of Newport, R.I. He is listed as being a commander of the "Sloop Venus" so I am assuming that he was in the navy. Which navy I haven't a clue. In later information I have he is listed as Capt. Daniel, and in 1765 he is boarding two sons of a Thomas Alexander of Stonington, CT. at Newport and is preparing them for sea. In this whole proccess Thomas manages to become indebted to Capt. Holloway to the tune of L917. Considerable amount of money and Thomas owns no land or has any other assets that I can find for collateral. I do know that Thomas's wife Hannah and Capt. Daniel Holloway were brother and sister, so that is probably the connection. The absence of land records in Stonington would lend some creditability to the fact that Thomas was also a mariner. Thomas died at Stonington, intestate, and the inventory of his estate indicates he was insolvent. DOD 1767. Capt. Daniel Holloway died at Newport, R.I. in 1811.
If there is anyone on this list that has any further knowledge of these people I would appreciate hearing from you. Anyone researching these folks, I have information to share.
Warm regards
Prentice Alexander

.
Skinner family in Puerto Rico/Scotland/Cuba/NY

I am searching for the family of my great grandmother Adelaide S. Skinner born about 1853 in Puerto Rico. I can not find her in the census when she is single. She married John B. Peacock born about 1850-1896. They were married 1871 and living in the Bronx 1880 census it says that her father was from Scotland and her mother Cuba.
I suspect that John was born in Mt Vernon, Westchester, NY to James and Jane Peacock from Scotland, (no real proof yet just 1860 census).
I also searched the 1860 census for Skinner born in Puerto Rico and surprisingly I found a 12 year old James Skinner also in the same town living in the home of a teacher. He disappears from the U.S. census after that. I’m not sure if he is related but there are no other Skinners from Puerto Rico or Cuba in the 1800’s.
I searched further in the town and found there was what looked like a school with many children that were born in other countries including Puerto Rico. In the same area I noticed that there was a good deal of sailors, merchants etc…Could this school be where people parked their children while at sea?
Any info on this family or any hints for searching for mariner families would be great.

Does any lister have any more information about Capt. Ira G. McLellan than what I am about to list?
He was born at Thomaston, Maine 1825 to Capt. Simon S. McLellan and Deborah Metcalf McLellan. Ira married Mary Jane Wincapaw (Winchenbach) at Friendship, Maine 1847. The History of Friendship written from the notes of Dr. William Hahn says that Ira died at sea in 1875. Records at the Mystic Seaport indicate that Ira was Master of the bark
"Jane A. Bishop" built at Greenport, Long Island, N.Y., 1857 and registered at Nassau, New Providence. He was listed as master for the years 1870 through 1876.
Would appreciate any help offered.
Thank you,
Prentice Alexander

Capt. John Harvey, died at sea 1822 Liverpool, NS

All I have is a hand written note from a desk found in the attic by a distant cousin who added:

"Thank you for your email of March 17th. Your letter was very interesting. I think I might have found the missing generation which would be Grandpa Harvey's (Kate Mellish's
husband) grandfather. Am sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but this information was stored up in my brother's attic among other documents pertaining to other things. So, I spent last night going through loads of documents and found just one that pertained to the
Harvey ancestors.
His name was John Harvey and he was a sea captain. He died at sea in 1822, sailing from the Port of Liverpool, N.S. I have no idea when he was born.
I wonder if a sea captain had to register at the town hall or with the maritime in order to get their license or is there a record kept of seamen who died at sea?"

she sent me a scanned copy of the note which reads as follows:

This Desk Belonged
To Capt. John Harvey
Who Died at Sea In the Year of our Lord
1822 (?--looks like Sableing) From the Port of Liverpool N.S
________________________________________________
It was Repaired by his Son John W. Harvey
In the Year of our Lord 1876
________
________

I know from anecdotal information that Capt. John Harvey was born in CT and his wife was born in NS.
His son John William Harvey#1 (was married to Susan F. Jones, daughter of Mehitabel Chadsey Jones and Capt. Smith Jones of NS,) moved to Boston and became a citizen and is my husband's great great grandfather.

Any info would be appreciated. thanks.

Isaac Knight of Falmouth or Portland, Maine

I'm trying to find out more about my Knight ancestors of Portland, ME. Specifically, the names of ships they captained, voyages they sailed, etc. Following are the details of three generations. I'm particularly interested in the third ("Isaac Jr.") since I have oil paintings I believe to be of him and his wife. (See: http://www.performance-vision.com/gen-knight/gen-knight.htm)

A newspaper clipping states that this Isaac voyaged to New Orleans, Cuba, and Europe. His first command was of the John Brewer but before it sailed he was transferred to a larger vessel. The article goes on to say that he commissioned a small, fast vessel called the Black Squall, built at Turner's Island. Later in life, he went into the grocery business.

Benjamin Knight was a cooper and had his shop and business on Fore Street between Deer and Vine streets in Falmouth (now Portland), ME. He was born in 1747, married Mary Walker, and died Dec 27, 1819 - all in Falmouth.

Among his children was...
Isaac, b. Dec 30, 1787, d. May 2, 1846, who married Nabby (probably Chamberlain).

Among Isaac's children was another...
Isaac, b. Jul 17, 1817, d. Jan 30, 1900. There's some dispute over his wife's name. One source says she was Fanny Peltis (or Pettis); another that she was "a Rollins."

Anyone out there have knowledge of these Knights?

Thanks, - Stan

I am looking for information on Capt Charles Mercier.
The USA 1880 census info shows his son Charles Allen Mercier stating his father born in PA. On his marriage certificate Capt Charles Mercier states his occupation as a "Merchant Marine." He married Ariadna Borden Chase 9/29/1845 at Freetown, MA., she a member of a prominent sea faring family. Capt Mercier seems to have disappeared out of the family tree. Oral history states "her left her" however one census shows her status as "widow."

If you have any further sources I could look I would appreciate the information.
Looking for any information about Calvin Thompson, born 1773 in MA, died about 1858 in NY. According to an old family letter, "he was a sailor by trade. He had been in nearly all parts of the world". He had three sons, Hiram, of who nothing is known except that he lived in PA; Silas b, 17 February 1806 in Washington County, NY; and the third son, my John Bisbee, who was born 1807-1809 in Ostego County, NY. They were in Evans Center, Erie County, NY in the 1840 census. This last shows his son John and an elderly man 50-60 who would probably be Calvin, even though he would actually have been 67 at the time.

Lookin for any help at all including ship rosters, locations, spousal information, etc.

I am looking for information on the father of Fitch BROWN (14 March 1796 - 19 June 1881). Fitch's obituary in the Seventh-day Baptists' "The Sabbath Recorder" states "[h]is father was a sea-captain and was drowned when...Fitch...was one year of age." This would put Captain BROWN's death between 1796 and 1798. Also, in the 1880 Federal census, Fitch had given his father's birthplace as Rhode Island. Considering his son's given name, Captain BROWN's wife or mother may have had FITCH as their maiden name.

According to family history, my ancestor Joseph Hardy and his family were seafaring people as well as ship builders. I do not have any proof of this and am searching every avenue to find some type of verification. Joseph Hardy Sr was born in 1734 in New Hampshire. He married a Sarah Richards born 1741 dau of James and Sarah Foss Richards. Joseph died in Isleboro ME about 1841. He had at least two sons, Zachariah and Joseph Jr who were supposed to have carried on in their father's profession. I would treasure any information that would help me gain a better knowledge of this multi-great grandfather and his family and thier connection to the sea.

Captain George P. Barber (1819 - 1891)

My great-great grandfather George P. Barber (24 April 1819 - 4 June 1891) is described in his obituary, published in the Narragansett (Rhode Island) Times of 11 June 1891, as having been "captain of three or four coasting vessels." It goes on to say "His last experience in that line was in the schooner Ezra D. Fogg, which sprang-a-leak off Long Branch, N. J., while taking a load of coal from Baltimore to Boston in April, 1867." (The ship capsized but the crew, and any passengers that were aboard, survived.) Can anyone tell me how best to find out what other ships Captain George commanded, and when? I would also like to know, since his *last* command was in 1867, whether he was one of the merchant mariners that the under-strength Union Navy recruited to help them enforce the blockade of the Southern ports.

I hope someone can help. This is a strange name for a ship or boat and, in truth, I'm not even sure the "Goooo" IS a ship.

When my Grandfather, Jonathan Glover, died in Salem in 1736, an inventory of his estate shows that he owed
(because of a "lone") 44 pounds and 16 shillings "To the Trustees of ye Goooo." I would assume this was a fishing vessel of some sort and that Jonathan would have been part owner.

Thank you if you can provide any information about this ship
or if anyone else had a grandfather who sailed the seas in the Goooo, I'd love to hear from you.

Jan (Byard) Saremi

Captain Joseph Murray Harvey, Ship Mississippi and Brig Ann

I am looking for information on my ggrandfather, who was Captain of the Mississippi before 1833 while married to his first wife. I don't know her name, but I understand that she was the daughter of the Rhode Island governor. They had two children, before she died: Mary & William. His second wife was Ann Rebecca Dye, a Virginia belle and he named his ship after her: the brig Ann. She was 16 when they married in Maryland in 1833. They had 15 children, the first died when they were going around Cape Horn, South America. It was buried in South America. Out of the other 14 remainder Harvey children, I only know the name of my grandfather, James Murray Harvey. Captain Joseph Harvey later settled down in Baltimore, Maryland where he entered the Coal business. I don't know when he was born or died or where he is buried. I also do not have that information on my grandfather, James Harvey. Ant help would be appreciated.

Seafarers named Hill

Hello!

I am looking for the parents of, and the county of origin for, Capt. David H. HILL (b. abt. 1840) and his brother, Capt. John S. HILL. Both were sea captains and both were born in Maine, but were in San Francisco as late as 1852 (then on to Seattle). According to the death certificate of Capt. David H. HILL, their parents were also born in "Maine," but their names are not given, nor their county of birth. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Mari Morrow
