Dave's Letter / purpose of this board / all in favour say "aye"

Hello to all readers,

Dave,

Just want to let you know that this board is shaping up to be a really great one.

Regarding the lady who "unsubscribed" herself, it is her loss. If this board was used only to post ship data, who would be out there to read it. The "back & forth" communications which develop between people with genealogical interests in their seafaring ancestors, brings to the surface an abundance of seafaring data, which otherwise would not be posted were it not for the inquiries.

Thank you for creating this board! It has already proven very useful. Moreover, it is extremely interesting and facinating to read the wealth of material which is submitted (and the inquiries).

My vote is "aye"

Kat O'Connor

Steamer Ironwood

My brother has two old photos of a small steamer loading gypsum in Cheverie. The ship is the Ironwood. A neighbour remembers the ship, as he and other small boys played on it as it was being loaded. He thinks maybe 1948. He remembers a gun or gun mount on the back of the ship. It looks to be only 2 holds, and of Great Lakes design.

Does anyone know anything about this vessel or can you tell me where to took for information on it.

Thanks for the help
Doreen

I am looking for information on ships built by Roderick Rose. I know the names of several of the ships: Glenrosa, Piskataqua, Delta, Thata and I know there are many others. ( I will get a list of them from my mother). Roderick Rose owned a shipyard in Cheverie Hants County Nova Scotia. He also built ships in other parts of the county. Any information would be great and we would especiallly like to find out if there are pictures of any of these ships.

Thanks
Doreen

Has anyone come across a ship named the "Onward". It would have sailed in the mid to late 1800's and it's said that it sailed from some port in Atlantic Canada to Glasgow, Scotland in a record setting time? Looking for general ship data and a passenger or deck hand by the name of Oren Tracy Johnson?

Father, mother and daughter drowned, but son Alexander age 8 was the only survivor of the wreck. Ship was on the way to St. John, New Brunswick. Not sure if it came from Scotland or England, or even the States. Alexander was born in 1753 or 4. Info on him is sketchy. One record shows him as being Scottish and another one states he was born in Sandwich, Mass. He was rescued by John McKenna of Checoggin, Yarmouth, N.S.

Many local folks from this area sailed on her but unfortunately most are deceased or their memories have faded.
Schooner Daniel Simmons

I am posting two more articles on the sinking of the Daniel Simmons below, if anyone is interested. My great great grandfather was James W. Doane. He and his crew were lost at sea due to the incident in 1898 and if anyone has ANY more info on him it would be GREATLY appreciated!

All hopes for the safety of the schooner Daniel Simmons owned by I.G. Hutchinson, Brighton, Digby have been given up. The crew of the Simmons, who unless picked up and carried to some distant port must certainly have been lost, were: Capt. James W. Done, Wayland Height, mate and James and Timothy Comeau, hands. They were all Digby men. Digby's contribution to the number of those lost by the gale of November was a heavy one, as many a saddened home throughout the country bears testimony.

Religious Intelligencer--- 28 Dec. 1898

We regret to say that the Schr. Daniel Simmonds , of Brighton, Capt. Doane did not arrive after the storm This vessel sailed from Glouster, for Brighton in company with the Schr. Princess, on Friday morning before the storm, and no tidings have been received from her since, except that Capt. Ryan, master of the Princess, says he sighted her astern Friday noon about fifty miles from Glouster. They were then endeavoring to reel the sails and he fears, with others, that they met a watery grave. The Daniel Simmonds, 70 tons register, was built in the US and was purchased some years ago by Isaac Hutchinson of Brighton, from which port she has been unning ever since. Her crew consisted of J. W. Doane, master of Brighton, who leaves a wife and large family; Chas. W. Haight, also of Brighton, who leaves a wife and four young children; Dennis Comeau, of Plympton, seaman, who leaves a wife and one child, and Timothy Comeau, of Gilbert's Cove, cook and seaman and unmarried. This is the second vessel Mr. Hutchinson has lost in the same trade, the other being the Ocean Belle, Capt. Dwight Ruggles which went ashore on the American coast, some years ago, the crew however in that case saved.
Digby Courier--- 9 Dec. 1898

All hopes for the safety of the schooner Daniel Simmons owned by I.G. Hutchinson, Brighton, Digby have been given up. The crew of the Simmons, who unless picked up and carried to some distant port must certainly have been lost, were: Capt. James W.
Capt. John Harvey, died at sea 1822 Liverpool, NS

All I have is a hand written note from a desk found in the attic by a distant cousin who added:

"Thank you for your email of March 17th. Your letter was very interesting. I think I might have found the missing generation which would be Grandpa Harvey's (Kate Mellish's
husband) grandfather. Am sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but this information was stored up in my brother's attic among other documents pertaining to other things. So, I spent last night going through loads of documents and found just one that pertained to the
Harvey ancestors.
His name was John Harvey and he was a sea captain. He died at sea in 1822, sailing from the Port of Liverpool, N.S. I have no idea when he was born.
I wonder if a sea captain had to register at the town hall or with the maritime in order to get their license or is there a record kept of seamen who died at sea?"

she sent me a scanned copy of the note which reads as follows:

This Desk Belonged
To Capt. John Harvey
Who Died at Sea In the Year of our Lord
1822 (?--looks like "Sableing") From the Port of Liverpool N.S
________________________________________________
It was Repaired by his Son John W. Harvey
In the Year of our Lord 1876
________
________

I know from anecdotal information that Capt. John Harvey was born in CT and his wife was born in NS.
His son John William Harvey#1 (was married to Susan F. Jones, daughter of Mehitabel Chadsey Jones and Capt. Smith Jones of NS,) moved to Boston and became a citizen and is my husband's great great grandfather.

Any info would be appreciated. thanks.

Many of us have reached a blank wall re where the DUNN folk came from in Ireland (Scotland?). It occurs to me that if everyone put their best info(guess) into a single bucket (here) on their pre 1900 Ireland source, we cold find statistically interesting connections. I volunteer to consolidate the info into a sortable/searchable list.

I will start with one Walter W DUNN, born about 1751, probably in N Ireland. Joined the 17th Light Dragoons (from Dublin) after the Bunker/Breeds Hill battle. Captured and released at Philadelphia Pa. Discharged in Roseway/Shelburne NS. Member of the Masons in Shelburne NS. Land grant and land dealings in Greene Harbour, Ragged Island (Lockeport), and Little Harbour. More DUNNs showed up in those areas and were somehow connected with Walter. 1st wife = ANN...2nd wife =? Three children by ANN, three or four by second wife = Isaac, Edward, William, & George?.

o could make a large source on which to do analysis.

I have learned that the CD Ships and Seafarers of Atlantic Canada contains
reference to the name MUSKER. Would someone with access to this CD be kind
enough to check for details of any Musker mariners? Our extended family
stems from Liverpool and there have been many generations of mariners
(including my father).
I'm looking for information regarding 2 paintings on metal (tin?) that have been passed down. One of the paintings has a large sailing vessel with a blue flag on top of one of the masts with the name MayOra Smith. It also has flag that looks like the British Flag except with a red background. The other painting has a different sailing vessel with H.E. Smith on the flag. I know that Hiram Edwin Smith lived in Cheverie, Nova Scotia, and I believe the ships were based from there too! If anyone has any information regarding these vessels or the Smith family, please contact me a.s.a.p.
EATON, Joseph (looking for son)

I've been told that Joseph EATON and his father Thomas were seafarers from Liverpool, Queens Co., Nova Scotia. I am interested in finding out if Joseph had a son who also went to sea.
I have an EATON man, first name not found as yet, who was born in Liverpool, NS, according to his son's WW1 draft registration. He had a son with the middle name of DOLLIVER, the maiden name of Joseph's wife Margaret, which would lead to the belief that he was their son (it's a rather unusual name to give a son unless there was a close connection.)
This man married an Emma LUFF, b. 1854, in Lancashire, and she, with four children (oldest named Joseph, another clue?) ages 8 to 1, is in the England 1891 census living with her mother near Liverpool, Lancashire. A husband does not appear in this census.....perhaps at sea?
Emma and 5 children (minus eldest, Joseph, who may have died) sailed for Boston in 1900, so she doesn't appear in either English or U. S. censuses, and there has been nothing further learned about her husband. She is listed as widow in 1910 in Lynn, MA.
I would like to be able to close this gap, and any clues as to how to get further information on this nameless EATON man would be gratefully received. Thanks for any help!

Margo

Looking any information/leads to the Jenkins' family's involvement in shipping. On coming to Nova Scotia around 1777 they have been ship builders, ship carpenters, owners, captains, etc. down until at least the 1890's. They first resided in the Digby to Sisaboo/Weymouth area then to Beaver River and Yarmouth, with two of the boys moving to St Johns New Brunswick. A good many appear to have left and moved back to Maine, Mass area. To date have not been able to identify any of the ships they were connected with. Would appreciate any help at all.
I am searching for my Uncle, Walter Dulenty, who was a Canadian. My mother's family always said that he was a Merchant Marine who on his last voyage never returned. Apparently there was a storm and the boat sank. They say that the name of the boat was the Dorion which sank off Nan Tucket Island, but I have being searching all kinds of sites on the internet in the hopes of locating this ship. I was told that on the last voyage they were carrying salt.

I know that he lived in Maine somewhere and had a room in Halifax, he also had an Aunt and Uncle living there. After he was killed nothing more was heard about this.

All I have is a letter sent by the premiere of New Brunswick dated the 20th November, 1936.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Dulenty:

I was sorry indeed to learn of the death of your son, and I extend to you and the members of your family my sincere sympathy. Yours sincerely ... and then he signed the letter but the signature is terrible can't even read the name.

I know that in Pugwash, Nova Scotia there are salt mines, don't know if the ship went there or not.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated. I have already different archives in the states and canada a few years ago, but now for some reason, I have to find the missing link.

I purchased the "Ships and Seafarers of Atlantic Canada". On the web site the two names that I am looking for are listed, but when I try and search on the cd I cannot find anything. If anyone can help find any info from that cd would be greatly appreciated.

Margaret Robert
Looking for information on Master mariner Charles Douglas Cooke (b. 1811, d. 1873) of Pictou, Nova Scotia. He was born in London, England and emigrated to Pictou circa 1830.
Charles was captain of the Brigantine "Comet" circa 1845 and the Brig "Sarah" circa 1850, both out of Pictou. Charles married Jennet Stalker (b. 1809, d. 1896) in 1834 and they raised a family of seven children. Two of their sons, William (b. 1836) and Charles (b. 1845) were Pilots for Pictou Harbour and jointly owned a small schooner the "Bertha Dee". I have the family information available from the 1838, 1871, 1881 1891 and 1901 censuses but am looking for additional information, especially with respect to the marine careers of Charles D. and sons. I am also interested in finding any information about Charles D.'s parents, William and Christy Cooke (or Cook).

There is a listing for Ahlbeck in the above CD. Could someone possibly look up this listing? I am looking to see if this might be one of the Ahlbecks who were sailors in my family.
Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thank you,
Patricia

Model of ship Colchester

I just ran across the following reference:

"A History of Beaver Brook, 1760 to 1959", Compiled by: The Beaver Brook Branch of the Women's Institutes of Nova Scotia, 1959

Which contains the following reference to a model of the ship "Colchester" which, according the the reference, is or was at one time, at NSARM:

"Captain Marshall continued to sail until World War II when he held a supervisory position at the Halifax dockyards until his death. A model of the ship 'Colchester' made by Captain Marshall was presented to Dr. MacMechan for his marine museum at Dalhousie. Later it was put in the Provincial Archives. The other of the two models he made was shown one year at the Canadian National Exhibition."

Does anyone know if this is a model of the Schooner "Colchester" built by John Sanderson for G.N. McLellan about 1874? I know it says ship in the reference but I don't know if those who wrote the book would make the distiction between ship and schooner. If it is the schooner, does anyone have a picture or know anything about it?

I've sent an inquiry to NSARM but it may be some weeks before I get a reply.

Thanks for any help,
--Brian

Capt George Nobel McLellan of Great Village

Capt George Nobel McLellan (1811-1884) of Great Village in Colchester county, was my great great grandfather. I would very much like to know more about where he sailed, the ships he built and sailed, etc. His father, Samuel McLellan was also a seafarer and ship builder (Londonderry and Five Islands).

I've explored obvious sources such as the Ships And Seafarers CD and found several of his ships there (some examples are the George Nobel, Samuel George, and the W.A. Black). For the more recent ones I've ordered registrations from Memorial University. I've also looked at books like "In the Wake of the Windships" and "Wooden Ships and Iron Men". I've also queried the Maritime Museum in Halifax. I also have an 1880s map of Colchester County which shows his farm in Great Village and is clearly labeled "Captain George Nobel McLellan" on the map. I've also posted queries on the Mariners-L mailing list.

So, beyond those sources, where else can I look? Does anyone have any information on him? I would welcome any pointers or info anyone can share with me. I'm located in California so I don't have easy access to archives in Nova Scotia.

Thanks,
--Brian

Can anyone help me with the above, who was my gt gt grandfather. He was born in Barneys River, Pictou County in 1839. Worked in a shipyard in Maitland NS or possibly St Johns NB in 1856. Shipped out without notifying his family and was given up for lost at sea. In fact he settled in New Zealand and had his own boatyard at Catlins River, Otago in 1866 building coastal vessels. I am trying to trace his movements in the intervening years. Is it possible that he appears on crew lists or apprenticeship documents? I would appreciate any advice. He may have been a crewman on a US ship the Flying Mist.
Cheers, Mike McPhee

Cogell may be spelled Cogill,Coghill or many other ways.
In 1872 he lived in Shediac,N.B. but may have lived in Sackville in 1879.
If he lived in N.B. where would he have fished? Is it possible that people from N.B. fished off Massachusetts?
Any advice on figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

Christopher was born in around 1775 and sailed out of Halifax. His parents were Samuel Goldsbury and Rhoda Partridge. I believe he wound up living in South Africa. There is also another Christopher Goldsbury that has come up in some records, evidently older than the Christopher named above, who was also a mariner. Can anyone shed any light on either of these men?

Dennis Sullivan, started a ferry and mail service from Meteghan to Westport. It ran during the 1860s on the "Lena B". The mail courrier service was associated with the Blacklands way station (which presumably is in Meteghan) I have not been able to find much about this. Does anyone know anything or could you advise me on avenues to investigate.

Dennis' son, Edward, also ran a ferry on the same route, called the "Agnes S".

Paul

My great grand father was Capt. William Edward Gardner. He lived in Louisbourg NS in 1860 where he and his family raised 6 kids. He sailed the East Coast, US, trading Ice and other things. He also traded with England. He may have been English or a Native of NS. He was born about 1830 and died on the west coast trading with China in the 1890's. At that time he was out of Vancouver or Victoria BC. I am looking for what ships he sailed on and where and what he traded. I would also like to find out when his ship went down and where it was going. Can any of you help me.
Thanks Leslie

I wonder who these 'several' men were.
'COILA' disappeared in the North Atlantic in 1879 I believe and wonder if any names of those lost are 'out there'. I've had some clues from a helpful researcher but would like more if possible. I've run across several other ships with same name which confuses the issue.. Thank you. Linda

Hello all! I'm hoping someone can help with my mystery of many years standing: seeking info. on my gr-gr grandfather, Joseph Martin. He was born at Gaspe, Quebec (1869), relocated to Peaks Island, Portland, Maine with parents when a boy. His father, Thomas, was a fisherman, lost at sea 1875. Joseph m. 1892 Wilhelmina Willard and had three children. About 1900, Joseph "disappears", abandoning wife and children. One of those children was my gr grandfather (also a Thomas Wm Martin). In later years, my gr grandfather tried to find out what had happened to his dad and the story has come down in the family that "he was lost at sea on a tug out of Halifax, NS" about 1917. There is no one left alive who can substantiate this for me. I wondered if perhaps he died in the Halifax harbor disaster, but his name was not included in the list of victims, though I realize many were unidentified. If this Joseph Martin was a transient working on the waterfront or as a fisherman, he might not have left any paper trails anyway.
His wife, Wilhelmina, divorced him in 1907, his whereabouts unknown, and she remarried. Any suggestions or leads would be greatly appreciated. I would love to be able to share info on the fate of his great grandfather with my dad, who is a retired commercial fisherman from Maine. Many thanks! - Jeanne

Alex Grant

In an ancestor's (Jessie Grant) obituary in the newspaperit states that she was relict of a formerly well known master mariner who recalls the passing of the loss of the steamer Pictou, in which a number of Pictou men had been employed. "Mrs. Grant's son, Robert, was one of these. Following this bereavement came some time afterwards the affliction of the loss of her husband in a vessel belonging to Capt. Foote which also departed from these shores never again to be heard from."
If Alex Morris Grant was well known one would think theri would have been a newspaper article or some notice of this loss at sea. The Pictou sunk in Jan 1879 and Jessie is in New York in 1881 with her daughter listed as a widow. I think she is in Pictou in 1880 on St. Andrew's Street listed as a widow. So I am assuming that Alex (one time also listed as James Morris Grant) was lost at sea in 1879 or even very early 1880. Does anyone have any record of this event????

Hello everyone:)

I am looking for information on our Great Grandfather Peter Connor. We know from family stories that he had a ship and that he sailed between Ireland, Boston, and Harbourville. His cook (at one time) was Tom (James) Coonan, also of Harbourville and that Peter's son Vinton Samual Connor (sometimes referred to as Vinton Coonan) also sailed with him, starting at about age 12.

Time frame:
Peter passed away in 1911, in Harbourville.
Vinton passed away in 1958 (?), in Berwick.

Peter's obituary (1911) states he sailed to many ports.
We are estimating that he came to Harbourville in mid-1800's.
Vinton was born 26 sep 1876, in Harbourville.

Thank you,
kat:)
Transcribed from the Halifax MORNING CHRONICLE of Dec. 3, 1872

NEW VESSELS
A fine barque of 722 tons called the A. MARSHALL, built by Mr. Alpheus MARSHALL, Bear River, was launched at that place last week and towed to St. John.
A brigantine of 288 tons, called the ZETLAND, was launched on Tuesday last from Mr. John H. McLEOD’s shipyard at Liverpool, Queen’s County.

THE STEAMER SOUTHERN
The North Sydney HERALD says: “SOUTHERN has been partially pumped out and is now in the dock. She cannot be got ready for sea as soon as anticipated, in consequence of one of the pumps not working satisfactorily. Lauchlin MacKAY, Esq., the celebrated builder, is here assisting in the operation.”

A SUCCESSFUL SHIPMASTER
The steamer ACADIA- a new collier belonging to the Allan Line-which arrived here yesterday from Pictou, is commanded by a young Haligonian, Capt. John WILSON, formerly of Messrs Robert Boak & Son’s barque STAG. The “Nova Scotia skippers” as a rule are active, pushing men, who know all that is worth knowing in their profession, but few can show such a record of rapid advancement as the commander of the ACADIA.
