Re your statement "SHOEMAKERS were highly regarded as skilled craftsmen in the 1800s and commanded a respectable position in society." What do your base your statement on? Do you have research or a source? I have an ancestor, John CAMPION, in Ireland who was a shoemaker and he continued the trade, as did his sons, when they came to the US in the 1840s.
