Edward and James McGrath

Looking for info on Edward McGrath, b. abt. 1846 Ireland. Was listed in 1880 Census, Chicopee, Hampden Co., MA as a bootmaker. His son, James, b. abt. 1867 Ireland, was listed in 1910 as a proprietor of a Cobbler Shop. Son of James, b. abt. 1899 MA, (my great-grandfather) worked as a woodworker in 1920.

Edward McGrath was married to Hannah, b. abt. 1855 Ireland. Their children included: James; Patrick b. 1869 Ireland; Michael b.1875 Ireland; and Anna b. 1878 MA. The age differences suggest that Edward had been married previously. Also living in the household was Edward's mother-in-law, Ellen Cronner b. 1797 Ireland. (She also would have been too old to have been Hannah's mother. Any help would be appreciated on this family line.

Thank you in advance for your time.
Mary Madeline McGrath-Cares
Harley Shoe Company/ Smith Shoe Company

Does anyone know anything about the Harley Shoe Company?

I am researching the Harley famiy for my husbands cousin, they were mainly from Birmingham England - the furthest i have got back is William Harley, born 1819, in Wolverhampton, who was a woodturner, as was his son. However, the story goes that part of the family went to America and formed the Harley Shoe Company (which may later have changed it's name to Smith) We don't know which member/s of the family emigrated, when they moved, or where to, but there is a thought that there was an Ohio connection? The only clue we have is this Shoe Company.
Can anyone help with any information or advice - it would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks, Angela

Gaines - Shoemakers in Georgia

My granfather John Clifton Gaines was a shoemaker, with his
own shop in Greenville South Carolina. He was born in Georgia in 1879 . I know that back in the late 1800s and early 1900s
you had to be an apprentice to become a shoemaker. I cannot find my grandfather anywhere in the 1900s. Would anyone know
of a place where boys would go to become shoemakers in Georgia
in the late 1800s or early 1900s? Any kind of help would be welcome. Thanks Leatha

Does anyone know where I could get information about cordwainers in England during the 1840s. It says there was an organization called the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers and historically most lived and worked in the Cordwainer ward of the city of London. The article I read did not give time periods for the organization though. I have a father and son, William and George Godward, who were both listed as cordwainers during the mid 1800's. I like to see if I could find more info about them through the records. George's son's birth certificate showed he resided at No. 22 King Edwards palace but I have been unable to find this location. The birth was registered in St. Thomas, Birmingham, County of Warwick. I'd also be interested in information about the King
Edwards palace location.

I am interested to know where the leather would come from for shoemakers in early-mid 19th century Yorkshire. Did we have tanneries or would it be imported? Someone else asked about apprenticeships but there were no replies. I would be interested in any information on how the trade was learned. I have an ancestor listed as Shoemaker or Cordwainer. Thanks.

My ancsestor Thomas Shannon came to the USA about 1850 through Boston,Mass. From what I have read there was a lot of bad feeling for the Irish in that area during that time. The family then moved to Mt. Holly,NJ. I know of one shoe seller in Mt.Holly but was wondering if there might have been some kind of orgainization where immigrant Irishman went to find work in the shoemaking field in the area. Can anyone help set me in the right direction?

Levi Hubbard, Shoemaker NY and MI

I am searching to find any information regarding my gggrandfather, Levi Hubbard (b:1809). Some census record say he was born in Canada, other say in Vermont. His wife's name was Malinda and children William Riley, Otis and Nancy Jane, were born in Lockport NY in the 1830's and 40's,, where I assume Levi worked as a shoemaker. The family ends up in Flint, MI in 1850 where the census records state Levi's occupation as a shoemaker. Levi died in 1869 according to a family bible record. If anyone knows of the shoemaker from long ago, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you!

German Shoemakers in Chicago

I am searching for the ancestry of three German Shoemakers that are inter-related. Adam Dexheimer was a shoemaker from Darmstadt-Hesse. His son Edward Adam Dexheimer married Anna Reinmuth, first daughter of Christian Friedrich Reinmuth, was a shoemaker from Glauchau, Saxony. When Christian Friedrich he died, his widow, Emilie or Amelia married another German Shoemaker, Philip Wolf.
Can I assume that these men were trained as apprentice shoemakers before they immigrated to Chicago?.
How can I find the Shoemaker's Guild records that list these three ancestors? Did each town have a separate Guild hall for shoemakers?
Are these available for research?

Chicago and St. Louis Shoe Factory history

For those of you with ancestors in shoemaking in Chicago or St. Louis, you may find this of interest.

From International Directory of Company Histories , (Libertyville, IL Library).
Florsheim Shoe Company, Vol. 9, p.234
130 S. Canal Street
Chicago, IL
(incorporated 1892 as Florsheim & Co.)
now a division of St. Louis based Interco inc.

Did quite well in early years. Family operation and very socially minded.
Changed way shoes were sold. (extensive history in “THE FLORSHEIM SHOE STORY”, Delivered to Chicago Literary Club by Jim Bowman March 29, 2004.

and….. a not so socially minded company.
Brown Shoe Company Inc. Vol. 68, p. 65
8300 Maryland Av.
St. Louis, MO 63105
www.brownshoe.com

incorporated 1881 as the Bryon Brown shoe company.
1873 Brown came from New York to St. Louis to work selling shoes with his brother.
After 4 years had enough money to open own shoe factory with business model of cheaper Midwest labor versus Eastern Shoe factories.
1878 first year made woman’s shoes. Obtained shoemakers from Rochester, NY to start business.
1900 St, Louis Fair – Model shoe plant which won award.
1911 Survey of St. Louis area shoe factory workers
more than half were 14 to 19 years old
84% of women and 70% of men were under 24 years old
Other companies saw good business model and started coming to St. Louis.
1902 Brown had 5 factories in St. Louis.
1907 first “out of town” plant in nearby Moberly, MO
(start of anti-union and how low can we go wages policy)
Several St. Louis shoe companies began manufacturing in surrounding rural towns because of cheap labor. Conditions in factory and poor wages helped to start first Union – Boot and Shoe Workers Union which was not very strong.
Then the more radical United Shoe Workers of America came along.
For small towns around St. Louis the standard at the time was to have the town build a shoe factory for the Business owners who would get tax breaks too. After a certain amount of wages (jobs), were paid, the Business owner was able to keep the factory.
1917 WWI Army contracts for shoes/ boots made owners a lot of money, and helped to improve some workers situation, with a smaller labor pool.
1920 Brown stumbled due to missing fashion trend of hemlines going up.
1929 Depression hurt business, but survived.
Brown was always very anti-union and played a lot of dirty tricks to keep unions out.
Shoemakers in Milwaukee in mid-1840s

My great-great grandfather, Johann Bingen, was a shoemaker in Germany and then immigrated to Milwaukee in 1846 with his brother in law, Nicholas Uder. They lived in the "Fourth Ward" at the time and eventually moved to Washington County, Wisconsin.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to learn more about where they might have worked or any of the tasks they might have done? Thanks!!

Isaac Young--Shoemaker--1870 Kershaw Co., SC census

While searching for my ancestor, Isaac Young, b. c. 1814, SC, tailor and shoemaker, I found another Isaac Young b. c. 1832, in the same general area of SC who was also a shoemaker. I know of no direct connection between them. Was the trade of shoemaker something that was passed down from father to son or did people apprentice? How did you become a shoemaker in the 1870's?

Joseph Wilson was a shoemaker all his life, Binghampton, NY 1860-75; New Orleans, LA 1875

Joseph Wilson and wife Mary McGlynn lived in Binghampton, NY then St. Louis, MO 1872-75. Went to New Orleans, LA in 1875, set up shoe shop then on to Bronson, FL about 1878. I am interested in anything about their life in any of these locations. From FL census records it appears he was born in PA around 1840, married in Binghampton 1861. His father was John from Nova Scotia, Ireland or England. The FL census says Ireland but the old family members thought England. I would like to know where his shop or home was in LA. Their children were: John, Mary Ann, Anna, Mary Ellen, Joseph, Jr., Christopher Columbus,Thomas and Nellie. I am unable to find help on this. Thank you Jackie
