In the 1910 Census I found my grandmother Elizabeth Sinclair living in Manhatten on West Thirty Fourth Ave. She was a lodger in the home of Lily Blow. Elizabeth listed her occupation as actress in the theater. This is quite a shock to me and I would like to research this further. Does anyone know where I can find out more information on her career? Where should I go from here? Thank you for any help.
Gaynor

Looking for some data on an actress named Estelle McMeal. She is pictured on a piece of sheet music dated 1914 for a song called "Is It Within The Law To Say I Love You?". That is all I've been able to find on her outside of a few small newspaper articles one dated 1914 and another 1922. Not sure whether she ever made any silent films, haven't been able to find evidence that she did.

Believe she maybe a distant relative of another actress Bebe Daniels, who was a silent and talkie star. Bebe's dad's orginial surname was McMeal.

Fred's younger brother, Meredith Carter Milton was also shown on a later census as a vaudeville performer. Any information, clues, help, will be greatly appreciated.

Lillie was the sister of actress Della May Fox. Nat was a theater company manager.

Elliott was acting by at least 1924 (in Merton of the Movies). He was also on Broadway and also sketched film motables for newspapers. In 1930 he is single, and is listed on the census as an artist in Los Angeles. In 1943-44, he may have been the Elliott Gilday Roth who was going by Anthony Rivers in a USO production in the Hamilton Islands.

Any other information, including an obituary, would be helpful. Was he married? Did he have any children? Thank you for any help.

Vaudeville Act - The Wandering Dutchmen

I have an old picture that was given to my dad many years ago from his cousin Andy Bodnar. Andy and his friend (last name was Preising - don't have first name) had a vaudeville act titled the "Wandering Dutchmen." I believe that Andy's wife was named Marie and that they lived in New York. Looking to find more information about this act. It was probably in the 1920's.

Margaret Ksiazak

W.A. Lavelle + McVictor Theater, Chicago

hi all-

I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to a website that would have any information on the 'Old McVictor Theater'? In W.A.'s obituary it indicates that he worked at the Old McVictor in the 1860's, and he would probably be working with his family as a child actor.

He later went on to work in various circuses and wild west shows, as he had a remarkable likeness to Buffalo Bill.

Thanks!

Nelly Isabella Heyden was born in Chorlton, Manchester, Uk, in June 1883, to parents Henry R and Mary Ann Heyden they also had daughters called Mabel B, Ethel Carrie, Minnie Louisa, and Florrie, they also had a son John A.

On the 1901 census Nelly was living at 28 Booth Street East, Chorlton, Manchester, with her parents and two of her sisters Ethel and Florrie, the sisters' occupation was stated as actress.

Family legend states that Nelly and her sisters were founder members of the Tiller Girls Dance Troupe.

Nelly is reported to have married Augustus Pearson in around 1940, although they were together a long time before that because my great uncle Fred was born in May 1913.

Augustus was a Trapeze Artiste, who is said to have been buried in the famous Highgate Cemetary, London.

I cannot find any information about Augustus Pearson at all, so any info would be gratefully received, wether about his professional life or otherwise, and as far as Nelly Heyden is concerned I cannot find any information after 1901, apart from the birth of her son, so again it would be great to chat to anyone who knows more about this lady and her family.

Thanks

Lisa

In 1920, Manhattan, New York, they had a son Elliotte who was 15 years old but I cannot find them in 1910. Their death dates are unknown to me as well. Lillie is the sister of Della May Fox and Nat Roth was often the manager of her company. Also looking for any information on her productions in Salt Lake City during the years 1895-1897. Any suggestions welcome!

Trying to trace (UK) - where to start? Help/advice please!

Can anyone give me some advice on where to find out more about theatre/actors in the late 1800s/early 1900s in the UK.

I've just found out that my grt grandmother was an actress and that she left my grt grandfather for an actor around 1904.
She was from the NE of England so I would guess that her career when she was younger was based in Durham/N. Yorks. After she married (in 1887) she had 7 children in fairly quick succession so it's unlikely (or is it?) that she would have been working as an actress then. Her last child was born in 1899 so she possibly returned to acting sometime after this.

She was born Margaret Jane Speck and her married surname was Gunson. On her marriage certificate, children's birth certificates and census returns she was variously known as "Marguerite Jane", "Marguerite Constance" and "Madge". Presumably her stage name would have been along these lines as well? My mother thinks that the name of the actor she left her husband for was "Philip Gordon" and I've found an actor in the 1881 & 1901 census returns of this name.

I have no idea where she was living when she left her husband or what happened to her after 1904 but would love to find out.

I know that there would have been hundreds (thousands) of actors in the UK then but are there any websites/archives/books etc that might help me with my search?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Vaudeville performers - Know real names, need "act name"

Lou E. Trudell (b:Dec 1883) and his wife, Nora, were vaudeville actors in Olympia, Washington (1910 census); he still lists his occupation as actor on his WWI registration in Chicago in 1918. I've been unable to find either of them in 1920 census. Because of the locations involved, I believe they worked the Orpheum Circuit. I've consulted MANY vaudeville books but can find no listing of Trudell. How can I find the act name or stage names they would have used? Assuming they belonged to a union (White Rats or succeeding unions), using their legal names, does anyone know if these types of records are available anywhere? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

His son Richard was born to Edith in 1911. There is no record of Frederick Colegrove/Colgrove after that .....

I am trying to find an ALEXANDER BALL.

I am searching my Granmother on my Father's side - called PEGGY MARGARET BALL (later Wellman and Kirkby), but she was adopted at the age of 2 in 1921. I have her original birth certificate which says that her parents were ALICE MAY BALL (nee GIBSON) and ALEXANDER BALL and they lived in the WOOD GREEN/EDMONTON area of London. There are also possible connections with Music Hall artists, and Alexander was also in the army.

That's where most of my information grinds to a hault. I have found one GIBSON family from Greenwich and one BALL family from South Kensington, which may be the right ones, but without further information and a marriage record for Alice and Alexander, it's very hard to tell.

The BALL family I have found were living in South Kensington/Chelsea, London at the time of the 1901 census, and comprised of:
JAMES BALL (44) Head
HARRIET BALL (39) Wife
JAMES T BALL (15) Son
HORACE G BALL (11) Son
PATTIE E BALL (9) Daughter
KATE F BALL (7) Daughter
NELLIE M BALL (5) Daughter
ALEXANDER W BALL (3) Son

If anyone can help it would be well appreciated.
I've located an actor named Charles D. Pierce in the 1900 census, living in Manhattan. I suspect he may be the husband of Lillian Jerome, about whom I posted earlier. In 1900, he is described in the census as married, but he is not living with a wife.

Lillian Jerome's son, my great-grandfather, gave his father's name as Charles D. Pierce on his marriage certificate and SS-5. He also said both his parents were in vaudeville. So, although Charles Pierce is a relatively common name, the middle initial and occupation make me think there is a strong chance this is the person I'm looking for. However, I haven't had much finding additonal information on this individual.

If anyone has information about this Charles D. Pierce, I would appreciate hearing it.

Tom Caines - stage performer

I'm trying to find some information on my 3x great uncle Tom Caines. He was born in Bristol, England c.1879. Recently I discovered that he had travelled to America in 1903. He married Stella/Ella Schring and they had 2 daughters - Blanche and Marnie. He's recorded in the 1920 census as an actor with the Robina(?) Film Co. His wife was recorded as a theatrical actress. In the 1930 census he's recorded as a stage actor. I know from his WW1 draft papers he was working for the Hollywood Amusement Co in the Superba Theatre, San Diego in 1918. I've also heard that his stage name could've Tom La Rose. Unfortunately I can find no information on the Amusement Co and because the writing is hard to read I am unable to read if Robin(a) is the correct name of the film company. Is there anyone who can help me find more info on my ggg uncle's career and the companies he worked for? Thanks.

He married Washtella (Rae Walker born in NY) in Georgia in 1898. In 1900 they were boarding in Jackson, Iowa. They had a son Stanley in California in 1904 and a daughter Zara in Denver in 1907. In 1908 Mrs R Samuel was made an Adventist Minister in Willamette, Oregon. She died sometime between then and 1911. Richard then returned to Australia with the 2 children. There may have been a third child born and/or died in the US. I want to know with whom they travelled and what kind of music they played and details of Washtella's birth/death.

One brother William Davies (Bacon Bill), another a Vicar and (my Great Granddad) John Gardener Davies a Headmaster of Leightonstow Boys School. She could have been born in Aberavon, Glamorgan. Parents were Mary Davies b. 1845 and Walter Davies b. 1843.

Bobbie's first name is Marie and I am wonder if Cole's song 'Me and Marie' could be the one referred to.

Marie (Bobbi(e)) ROLLINS was a singer/dancer who lived in New York and is supposedly buried next to her show business partner Lorrie ALLEN aka Teddie LESLIE. Both were born ca 1901.

Can anyone help? I have found nothing thus far to verify this story.

RKO Ann Pritchard & Co 1930

Hello! I have an ancestor named Chuck Shaeffer (that's his stage name, real last name was Schonvizner). I have a post card that has his picture with the subtitle "Eccentricity Personified". The bottom says, "Touring RKO 1930 with Ann Pritchard & Company." Does anyone know anything about this particular company, or any sources available to find out about Vaudeville in this time period? I believe that he was based in New York. Any help offered will be appreciated! Thanks!
Julie

I am still trying to find John Pratt, born in the 1850s in Inverness, Scotland and his wife Annie (Higgins) Pratt.
They were in the acting profession from about 1875. Their children I know of:-
Caroline Jane Pratt - born Perth Scotland in 1879 (married Clement Bevan of Bristol in 1901)
John Thomas Pratt - born Aberdeen Scotland in 1880
Mabel Rose Pratt - born Glasgow Scotland abt. 1885
Annie Rebecca Pratt - born Edinburgh Scotland 1887

On the 1881 census, they were living in Wales and were given as being actors/operatic singers - could not find them in 1891 or 1901 but on their daughter Caroline's marriage certificate, father's profession is given as actor.

Unfortunately I have no idea if Pratt was also his stage name. Other members of the family were also on the stage but in an amatuer capacity.

It would be wonderful if someone has heard of the Pratts. I have been trying to locate books or databases of Victorian/Edwardian age actors to no avail.

Thanks for any help
Fiona

Grosvenor was my great grandfather and he is proving to be elusive. In 1924 he had twins with Irene Littlejohns, the birth certs assume they were married, but I have been unable to find any marriage in gro index. On the birth certs of the twins, they are both down as members of the theatrical society. One of the twins was my grandfather he was put into care age 2 the other twin died aged 15 days old. On the death cert Grosvenor (the father) is down as a Music Hall Artiste.

I am desperate to trace these roots as I know nothing of my great grandfather. If you can help at all, I would be grateful. There are two Grosvenors born in the UK around the right time and my great grandfather is none of these. So he may of been born abroad, Ireland could be a possiblity.

Please contact me if you knew of have heard of Grosvenor Ashford Clarke

Della Fox, Lillie Fox, Nat Roth

I am researching Della Fox, her sister Lillie Graham Fox, and Lillie's husband Nat Roth. I would like to know if Della ever had any children. Also, did Nat and Lillie have children other than Elliotte b. 1905 NY and listed with his parents in 1920 Manhattan? I cannot find Nat and Lillie on the 1910 census. Was Nat Roth a stage name? He managed Della's comic opera company several seasons. They were based in New York. I have Della's parents and siblings from the 1880 census.

Especially interested in the 1897-1898 season during which Della starred with Lillian Russell and Jefferson De Angelis in "The Wedding Day." Would be interested in any tidbits about De Wolfe Hopper during the same time period. He was said to have been engaged to Della Fox between his third and fourth marriages.

Any and all help greatly appreciated! Janet

Milton Bode 1836-1938 UK

I am researching the life of my great-great uncle Milton Bode who was a theatre producer/manager/proprietor of many provincial UK theatres. He was especially known for musical theatre and pantomimes. He worked with many famous people of the time including Dan Leno and Edward Compton (Mackenzie)

I would be interested in exchanging information with anyone who has come across my uncle.

Silent Movies: Anders RANDOLF

Looking for ANY information on Anders RANDOLF, who was a silent movie actor. He was in many movies of the era, often acting with Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickord, etc. He usually played a villain.

He was born in Denmark, came to the US in about 1890 to 1895. He was a fencing master at a school in Ohio, and went into movies about 1915. I have several addresses for him, one in NY state, where he lists himself as an artist with his own studio (1910 census), one at a theater in NYC (1920s ship manifest), one with a different address in NYC (manifest again, in the 1920s), and Beverly Hills, (1930 census). My problem is, I know that he was in the military, before 1901, he was naturalized in 1901 and his military service was mentioned. Of course they didn't mention what branch of the service he was in, or where he served. I would like to know what kind of artist he was, in 1910, and if he acted on Broadway, since he listed a theater as his home address.

Does anyone have any information on this man? Or does anyone have any idea where I could find information on him? I got a ton of articles from Ancestry, but most of them were just ad pages for some of his movies! I am SO frustrated!!! Can anyone help?

Jan Birkner

I am searching for a David Houston. He worked at one of
the Theatres in Glasgow in the 1950s.

While in Glasgow,in 1956, we attended a Dinner and Dance
for after the shows. It probably started around midnight.
This was held at an Hotel in Sauchiehall St.

The Houstons are my husband,s family and I have them traced back to the early 1800s.

David would be in his seventies. His parents were David and
Rose Houston and lived in Glasgow.

Catherine,Canada

I'm unsuccessfully trying to find info on my great great grandmother Lydia LANE, 1846/7 - 1926. Family rumors say she was an actress (I'm assuming in the theatre.) She lived both in NYC and Chicago. Any suggestions on finding out if this rumor is true???

Her married names were: MYER (1870); CASEY (unknown); and THOMPSON (1916.)

KAIN Thomas Stephen. I know vertually nothing of this person, my Grand Uncle other than he was born 1868 at Stepney. Had a house at Ilford, and died at Westminster Hospital 13th April 1947. But, he was an actor, (known as a drag artist in the family). I cannot find him in any census after 1881 when he was 13. His will mentions a niece Patricia ADAMS, and a friend Harry BONE.
Anything about his acting? (artistic career) would be appreciated.
thank you in anticipation.
