My father - Eddie Sandson was lead trumpeter with Henry Santry's band sometime in the 1920's. They traveled the country and played a lot of concerts and dances. I don't know any details, but I do have a really old photo of the band in front of a theatre which has the bands name on its sign.

However I have researched through "The Stage" publication and got lots of information on the Dench/Artaud/Whitfield actors. I think it goes back as far as the 1880s to the present day. However note that it is not free you have to subscribe to it. Good luck with your hunting and if I come across anything on your family I will come back to you.

Helen
Hi there,

I have just stumbled upon this thread whilst searching for information on my Grandad (Charles Ross, actor early 1900/1920s) and Grandmother (Delia/Della/Nina Lockwood/Aldous, actress same era.) They worked with The Carlton Fredericks on pantos mostly around the West Country. I was researching using The British Newspaper Library website and saw that my Grandad played "Ali Baba" to Cissie's "Corgia" at the Exeter Theatre Royal in Feb 1919 production of The 40 Thieves. There is a large amount to information on Cissie and Sidney's performances during that time on the Newspaper website if you have not already found it. I know very little else, especially about my own grandparents who seem very hard to track down. I have no photos of any performances. Any info you may have about them or any other performances from Carlton Fredericks would be greatly recieved. best wishes,

Ellalaine

You can find her living with John and Anna Maria Horrell-Bray along with their daughter Estelle and Will's brother Albert Bray in Chicago, Illinos 1900 census.

Will Bray, then married Mary Elizabeth Schrader and they did not have any children. She raised Estelle and I did meet Estelle years ago at her 45th wedding anniversary and did know her daughter Adell and talked to Adell and that's how I received the photos. Adell, sadly has passed away. She would have been over the mood to hear any information.

ESTELLE FRATUS - DENNIS - Has now been found ....tks

Looking for any info pertaining to the death of a g/aunt from Australia - Estelle Fratus vaudeville performer in the USA during the 1920-35

She travelled to USA marring Carl Denny Dennis enroute 1927 in Hawaii. She performed on vaudeville as dancer/comedian with Earl Carrolls Vanities during the 1920-30s. Moving onto performing with Henry Santrey & Soliders of Fortune 1930-35. I have located numerous newspaper articles of her performances under her maiden name - which indicates she was doing well, even a plug from Walter Winchell, calling her "The Star from Down Under".

Unfortunately at the peak of her career she died 7th march 1940. I have been able to find two memoriums from her husband in the Variety Magazines indicating her date of deatch but unable to discover exactly what state she died in and is now buried. Not sure if she was buried under FRATUS or DENNIS. Have been searching high and low.

Would appreciated any help or advice.
Regards
Laurin
They had their appearances in Las Vegas between 1950-1960.
Were they original Tyrol from Austria or were they Americans with Austrian ancestry ?

I look forward to your answers.
I found Estelle Fratus Dennis obit in "The Detroit Free Press", Sunday, March 10, 1940, part one, page 9, column 5. She had lived in Detroit for 2 years and lived at 60 Winder St. She had a night club act with her husband, Carl L Dennis. Her mother, Anzina Fratus and brother, Arthur Fratus also survived her. Both living in Sydney, Australia. Funeral home was A J McInnes, 15941 Woodard. Services at St. Patrick's Church. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The cemetery has a search engine and Estelle is listed. Gravestone can be seen at www.findagrave.com

Carl was listed in 1941 Detroit City Directory as living at 56 Winder and occupation was actor. No listings for 1938 or 1939.

I found several newspaper articles on Estelle Fratus at www.fultonhistory.com which has many NY historical newspapers and it is free.
Contact me and I will email you a copy of Estelle's obituary. I had looked it up for another person requesting her obituary.

Regards, Kay

Hi Laurin,

A suggestion I would have is to contact the NY Public Library. They have a large collection on the theatre and the arts, including vaudeville, et al. Perhaps they have a file on her - some newspaper clipping that did indicate a burial location or information that was forwarded to them.

NY Public Library -
http://www.nypl.org/locations/lpa/billy-rose-theatre-divisio...

Perhaps one or both of them were in a union. That might be another avenue to explore.

Good luck to you!
Kathleen

Re: Jewish german/austrian traveling actor/comedian

Moritz's mother died when he was very young. He was raised by his Grandmother.(Moritz's mother remarried, name unknown, and there were three girls of this marriage-Lottie, Elsie, and Bertha. Elsie married a Mr. Ziffer. Their son, Otto Ziffer, came to the USA at age 19 in the
early 1900's. It is believed Otto had a sister and a brother. Otto did not stay long in the Peoria area and moved to Santa Monica, California. Nothing has been heard from him since early 1930's.)
Moritz was an actor by trade and appeared in all the leading theaters of Germany and Austria-Silesia, the area in which he was born. His popularity never waned but, in 1872, he left the "old country", at the age of 25, to go on stage in New York.
It is believed he traveled on the Hamburg line to the United States (as per a letter on file by his wife, Lena, to her nephew, Joseph Johingk, in Dec. 1913.)
He won attention for his work in the Germania Theater with director Neuendorff in New York. He was the leading actor there for fourteen years. He was very talented as a charcter actor and as a singing comedian. The building was
destroyed a long time before his death. (The above was taken from his death notice in the Peoria Paper.)
It is believed that he met Lena Schafer at the German Society in New York. They were married in
Kings County, and the certificate was filed in New York County on Sep 26, 1889. He was 40 years old and she was 23 years old. They traveled together with an acting troupe doing one night stands and sometimes staying longer. At times he and Lena would travel ahead of the troupe, and prepare small children to play the parts of the Seven
Dwarfs so when the troupe arrived the children were ready to go on stage.
Moritz and Lena settled in Pekin in 1892. He entered the beer bottling business for the P. Schoenhofen Brewing Co. by cleaning, bottling and delivering the bottled beer to homes on a routine schedule. While in Pekin, IL, he was a member of the Empire Lodge of the Masons and transferred to the Schiller Lodge of Peoria in August 1896.
According to the Peoria City Directory, Moritz came to Peoria in 1895 and resided at 1519 S. Adams St. There are other residences until 1904 when the first listing for "M. Wolkenstein & Co. Junk" business at 1122 S Adams St. appeared.
My husband's grandfather apparently had a travelling picture show in Ireland in the early 1900's but I cannot find any information about him, or his picture show. His name was James Murphy and he and his wife May/Mary were in Cashel in 1912 which is where their son William John was born. They migrated to Australia in 1925 so i think they ran the business until around that time. Any information about this would be most appreciated

I and my sister, Karen, were both members of the Weldonians. I joined in 1967 and stayed until 1972 or 73, can't remember at the moment what year I left.

I played trumpet in both the parade and show band, and I still play trumpet and like to play flugelhorn most of the time any more, with which I often accompany church choirs and congregational singing in church. When traveling I carry a pocket trumpet most of the time, just in case there's the opportunity to join in at a camp meeting or revival meeting.

We met at the Southland Mall in Hayward on Monday evenings, Chabot Junior College on Saturday afternoons, where we practiced marching in the parking lots, had seat challenges in the music department rooms, and so forth. We met up on High Street in Oakland on Thursday evenings for show band practice.

I would like to have a copy of the Weldonian Handbook from that period, and am particularly interested in having copies of the speeches in the back that we all had to memorize and recite on Monday evenings when working to make rank.

I did a lot of the certificate caligraphy for promotions and other purposes.

I can say that I did acquire much of the discipline of my life from the training I received in the Weldonians; I would not trade the experience gained there for anything.

I was in the Air Force when Mr. Leonardson passed away and was deeply grieved at his passing. I thought of him as a great man.

Robert E. Patenaude
Campbellsburg, Indiana
Baptist Missionary

Hi Martine,

I've narrowed it down to a three year window. John Baptist is on the 1881 census in Marylebone, London, with his first wife Anna, and their daughter (also Anna). His wife died in 1884 - her death is registered in the June quarter. By 1887, John Baptist and his second wife Iliza Caroline Gay were in Australia, because they married in Victoria in 1887. I wonder if they went out together? They were cousins, because John Baptist's mother, Carlotta Collins and Iliza/Eliza's mother Iliza/Eliza Collins were sisters, so they certainly knew each other.

Best wishes,
Anni

Mabel Maud Coleman (Beaufort)/Louis Beaufort

Mabel Maud Coleman was born in Dundee in 1880. She was my GG Aunt. She apears on the 1891 Scottish Census but cannot be found on the 1901 Scottish or England census.

She next crops up as the informant of her fathers death in 1907 (in Dundee). Her name by then is Mabel Beaufort and she is noted as living in Kent.

In 1911 England Census she is living in Manchester as the wife of a Louis Beaufort (age 50), a musician, she is down as an actress. I can find no evidence of a marriage between them.

Louis, has an interesting past. Seems he is from NSW in Australia, but cannot find any records of his brith or family there. What is certain is he plied his trade as a musician on ships between UK and Australia around 1895-7. However, he was in UK around 1891 as he was prosecuted after running away with a hotel keepers wife and charged with theft (acquitted tho!). He marries a Fammy Elizabeth Steophens in 1895 and has a son - Louis Ormez (Ormez is the name of the ship he worked on). They turn up in the 1901 Scottish census lioving in Paisley where he seems to have been the manager of the Empire Music Hall there.

Louis died in Sept 1923 in Manchester and is buried in a public grave in the Southern Cemetery.

Of Mabel, I cannot find anything on her after the 1911 census.

Both of them crop up in searches of The Stage Archive but I don't have menbership to see the full articles.

Any UK theatre experts out there who might have a steer on where to turn to for any possible information?

Many thanks.
