AUSTINTOWN – Calvin T. Banse, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio.
Calvin was born April 14, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio a son of the late Calvin H. and Helen Taylor Banse, and lived most of his life in the Youngstown area.
He worked almost 40 years for Erie Lackawanna Railroad and retired as chief dispatcher in the late 1980s.
Prior to his career with the railroad, Calvin worked delivering ice in Sharon, Pa. and served in the Navy during World War II.
An avid train enthusiast, Calvin was known throughout the country for building model railroads.
He won many awards for building model cabooses and co-authored several books.
He also provided the photography for several books about the Erie Lackawanna Railroad.
He was a longtime member and vice-president of the Mahoning Valley Model Railroad Association.
Calvin leaves his wife, Blenda Dearing Banse, whom he married Dec. 17, 2011; a stepdaughter, Rana Spillman of Austintown; two nieces, Patti Banse of Maine and Pastor Lynn McClure of Arkansas; a nephew, Alan Lewis of Oregon; and many, many friends.
A brother, James Banse; and a sister, Nancy Lewis, preceded him in death.
Per Calvin’s request, there are no calling hours or services.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, OH.
