I am seeking information on Edward Lafayette "Lafe" Young, born July 13, 1872, in Cedar Valley, Travis Co., Texas and died March 26, 1940, in Austin, Travis Co., Texas. He married Lena Lenora Wright on November 08, 1893, in Caldwell Co., Texas.
The following paragraph was taken from his eulogy:
"... During the next 20 years following he engaged in various lines of endeavor, including farming, ranching, contracting and for a number of these years he was connected with the Zilker Ice Company, of Austin. In 1914 he joined the force of mounted police of the city of Austin; later he became a plain-clothes man in the city’s detective force; still later he was made chief of the detective force. In the years following he became constable of one of the county precincts, and finally, became a Texas Ranger, in which capacity he served a number of years, regularly, and later in special work as it was assigned to him.
The Adjutant General Service Records in the Texas State Library, Archives Division, in Austin has two records on him ---
The first record was in File No. 401-110, Adjutant General Service Records, Special Rangers. It showed service, without compensation, from enlistment as a Private (no company listed) on August 8,1925, to being discharged on October 2, 1925. On the first page, it has typewritten "Enlisted for T.L.S.S. Com." The Warrant was dated September 8, 1925.
The second record was in File No. 401-65, Adjutant General Service Records, Regular Rangers. It showed service enlistment as a Private in Company B Ranger Force, Station Austin, on April 8, 1927, for a period of two years. The "warrant of authority expires on April 8, 1929." He was discharged on May 15, 1927. The Warrant was dated April 8, 1927. So, he was in only about 5 weeks. Both records listed his occupation as Peace Officer.
These two records are obviously for short periods of special service as mentioned in his eulogy. The Texas Rangers are a great law enforcement agency. But in the earlier years, the Texas Rangers were not great record keepers. I am looking for any information on Lafe's service as a Regular Ranger, such as what company he was in, and as a detective and Chief of Detectives on the City of Austin (Texas) Police Force.
I have been to the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco, Texas, but had no luck in finding any information on him when searching their records.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give.
