Antony Wayne Walters was a Texas Ranger in 1838 in Coryell or Lampasas County during the Indian Troubles, as it was called. Did he make any history? He was recruited by Capt Hiram B.Stephens. Do you know when he died? Where? How?
Thank you Sir. Merkel Walters mertiger@@comcast.net
I am his Great-Grand Son. Texas Rangers"
I have received from the TX Archives a record that shows possibily him as joining Walkers Rangers in Corpus Cristi 22 Nov 1859 to fight in Cortinas War. We need more to justify getting him a VA CSA grave marker as he has no marker. We show him as being born LA 1838/39 and dying in Santa Rosa in 1903. Middle name might be Hazel..

Any help appreciated.

Charles Christian
Docent/Civil War Specialist
SAnta Rosa Rural Cemetery, CA

Inquiring regarding a David W. White b 1821, d 1914, bur in Palo Pinto Co. He served as a Ranger most of his adult life. Have reason to believe he served in areas of Jack, Navarro, Young, Parker & Palo Pinto counties. Might have been associated with Lawrence Sullivan Ross (Sul Ross) in the 1860s during his tenure with the Rangers. The repository at Waco was unable to locate any records. Does anyone have knowledge of this time frame & direct me to another source.

I've been searching for Robert Monroe Robinson in an official government listing that would show more exact which Co. he served with in the Civil War. So far all I have found was written in his obituary that says:

"Mr. Robinson was a member of Captain Nolan's Company of the Ranger which was organized to protect frontier settlements from marauding bands of Mexicans and Indians. The Company mustered out of service of the State and immediately enlisted in the cause of the Confederacy and became a part of Col. Peron's Regiment [this should read: Pyron's Regiment. Col. Charles Pyron I believe]. known as the 2nd Texas and which operated in Louisiana and on the Rio Grande. He took part in the defense of Galveston and is said to have been the first man aboard the Federal warship, Harriett Lane, when it was captured by the Confederates."

There is also a listing in an article in the "Picayune" a weekly newspaper published in Bee Co. TX on April 4, 1895 when the local Civil War Veterans organized. Each veteran signed his name and unit they served in and Robert M. Robinson is listed as being in "O" Co. Texas Cavalry. [I thought it possible that the newspaper reporter may have misread the handwriting and the Co. could have been Co. "C" or Co. "G" in place of "O". I am trying to determine the correct Company he was assigned to serve.]

Today I found the following at:

http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm

No. Soldier Name Side Function Regiment Name
1 Robinson, Robert M. Confederate Cavalry 2nd Regiment, Texas Cavalry (2nd Mounted Rifles)

Could anyone offer any guidance that might lead me to the correct Company or Unit for Robert Monroe Robinson?

Nell Lewis

Could anyone tell me where to find information on 'NOLAN's COMPANY of the RANGERS' that became a part of COL. PERON'S Regiment, known as THE 2nd TEXAS Regiment in the Civil War? I've been told that NOLAN's RANGERS were considered part of the early TEXAS RANGERS until the Civil War broke out and this organization was abondoned when the individuals joined in the Confederate fight. ROBERT M. ROBINSON who had migrated to Goliad Co. TX about 1856 joined NOLAN's RANGERS after he helped to organize BEE CO. TX. that had originally been a part of GOLIAD CO. TX. This was found in the obit of ROBERT M. ROBINSON:

"At the outbreak of the hostilities in 1861, Mr. Robinson was a member of Captain Nolan's Company of the Rangers which was organized to protect frontier settlements from marauding bands of Mexicans and Indians. The Company mustered out of service of the State and immediately enlisted in the cause of the Confederacy and became a part of Col. Peron's Regiment known as the 2nd Texas and which operated in Louisiana and on the Rio Grande. He took part in the defense of Galveston and is said to have been the first man aboard the Federal warship, Harriett Lane, when it was captured by the Confederates."

Any guidance in my search would be greatly appreciated.

Nell A.
JC TURNER- Texas Ranger

I found out that my great-grandfather James C. Turner was a Texas Ranger and that he got shot up rather bad in a gun battler with either Mexicans and/or Indians near the Texas border. I think it might have been Comacheros that ambushed him. His boss was a man named Lee Hall.
How would I find out the details about this incident?
Family legend has it that he was only one of a few survivors of the attack.
I checked the Texas State LIbrary and Archives here in Austin but all I got was his discharge papers and no mention of any incidents he may have been in. I think he was in Company B or F of a Frontier Batallion(I haven't got the info in front of me). I would also like to find out about the other guys that served with him.
Please contact me with any information.
Helene R. Schmidt

Do any of you have an interest in the Van Riper family? There may be other Texas Rangers there, I just haven't found them yet.

Since someone posted this on a website for me last week, the cemetery has been mowed, revealing all of the broken and missing monuments.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbexar2/alamomasonic.html
tells the story.

There is a list of names of everyone buried in the cemetery at
http://www.angelfire.com/folk/alamo_masonic_cem/index.htmlbu... their photos were taken years ago.

Would someone please read that and let me know if there are other Texas Rangers on the List?

Now with the tall weeds cut, the number of missing and broken stones have been revealed. It is the ONLY neglected cemetery in the old 25 square block cemetery complex of 31 cemeteries.Go take a look, it is the cemetery on Commerce Street between Pine and Monumental, next door to the old Friedrich factory.

Texas Ranger in 1848

I am looking for information on my great great grandfather Drury G loveall. In 1901 he filed for a pension from the Texas/Mexican War. File #SA-25216. It was filed in California. He shows up in the Texas Military unit muster rolls as Drurah loveall. It is believed that this was in 1848. He is listed in the East Texas Family Records Index as Drury Loveall volume 5 issue 1 page 52. He was supposed to have been at Kaufman Station which was widely known as Johnson Station. Johnson was ordered to move his company to Kaufman Station in January on 1848. This is where I'm believing it was 1848. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am looking for any information I can find, because I don't have too much so start with. He had a brother's by the names of William and John Francis Mclaughlin, they were all born in ILL. He married an Osage Indian lady, they were granted land in Oklahoma, because of her ancestry.
I am on my way to the Texas Ranger Museum, then on to land grants. I any one could pass along info, it would be very appreicated. My aunt and I are trying to fill holes in a family tree and his lineage is the biggest hole of all. Thank you, Leslie R.

I am looking for info on JOHN ADAM BRANDON who came to Texas on horseback with his saddle and a gun to be a "deputy".

JOHN BRANDON was born in 1851 in Missouri and came to Texas via Arkansas (Searcy?).
He had at least two brothers, Hugh and Charlie Brandon, who evidently settled near Waco somewhere.

JOHN BRANDON met his future wife Emma Calhoun Robinson (b1855) in NE Texas somewhere - she was staying with family friends the DULANEYs. Emma C. Robinson had a sister, (Mary)MINNIE, and a brother WalterJohn Robinson who also lived in Texas. She had half siblings by the name of MORRIS.

JOHN BRANDON and EMMA C. ROBINSON married and moved to Tehuacana (near Wortham, Texas) where they had three children and the family settled for generations.

JOHN BRANDON is missing in action before 1900 census. I only have great family stories ---no proof of existence at all! If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear from you.
WARD'S FRONTIER RANGERS

I'm searching from my gggrandparents. I have their daughter's birth certificate stating these names. Also an Obituary from Weatherford, TX "LATE W.P. GILLILAND WAS PARKER IONEER...Came to Texas Before Civil war; Buried This Week. Special to the Press WEATHERFORD, Dec. 19--W. P. Gilliland, who was buried at Springtown this week, was a Parker County pioneer. He was 83 years old, the oldestof a famiy of 13 children, seven of whom survive him. When a boy of 10 he came with his family to Texas and they lived here during the troubled days of the Civil War. Before the war had come to a close he saw active service in Ward's Frontier Rangers, a company of men who protected the white settlers of this section from depredations of Indians while most of the men were away from home inth eConfederate army.
After the close of the Civil War, Mr. Gilliland returned to Arkkkansas and remained for 10 years, returning to Parker County in 1876. He had resided here continuously since that time and had led an active life until compelled to retire by advancing age. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. T. G. Hoyle, Agnes, TX; Mrs. W. B. Hendricks and T. M. Gilliland, Weatherford,TX; Mrs Mary Hoyle, Frisco, OK; Mrs. W.C. Montgomery and J.B. Gilliland, Poolville, TX; W. M. Gilliland, Floydada and T. M. Gilliland, Weatherford. One of his sisters, Mrs. J. M. Bowen, lives in Fort Worth.
The only clue I have to the date is that shoes were advertised at $4.95 on the back of the obit.

Any info. would be helpful in locating siblings or children. I have lots of pics to share.

Rev. Linda Pope
Alex, OK

BUTCHER family in Farwell, TX (A Ranger)

Do you have a relative that was a Texas Ranger? I supposedly do -- Jack (Jackson or
Farrell?) BUTCHER. He lived in Farwell, TX at sometime in his life. He had a daughter
named Mabel (or Mable) BUTCHER that married Paul HUBER. Mabel lived nearby in Texico,
NM at one time in her life. Other descendants unknown.

I am looking for descendants of Jack (Farrell or Jackson ?) BUTCHER born about 1868(?) in
Illinois (IL). His parents were Amos Woodward BUTCHER and Catherine (STADLER-KIRCHER)
BUTCHER. Amos was born about 1826 in Maryland and Catherine in Missouri.

If this sounds familiar to you, let me know.
