Surnames: Stevens
My g-g-g-g-grandfather James Stevens is listed on the 1861 Census of Heckmondwicke, Yorkshire at age 33 as a Sergeant of Police. By 1871, age 43 he's in Dewsbury, Yorkshire listed as a police pensioner and umbrella maker. If I can narrow it down, perhaps I can find out why he left the profession so young.
