I have a great uncle that everyone in my family says used to be a Deputy US Marshal. He was born around 1920. Nobody knows what happened to him after the Marshal service. He was my maternal grandmother's brother. Does anyone know where I can go to find him? Is there a government employee's directory somewhere or something?

Shannon,
I know it has been a long time since your post and hopefully you are still out there. Do you have any info on the marriage between Tilghman and Flora Robinson? ie when and where? Flora was actually a Doby, daughter of Christopher Doby unless he married two different Floras. My memory tells me perhaps she was married to a Joe Robinson but i don't have the info with me at this time.
thanks
Sandra

Is there a place where the Deputy U S Marshalls are listed?

The bootheel of Missouri was often serviced by parts of NW Tennessee. At times the mail for NW Tennessee was delivered to the bootheel areas around what is now Caruthersville and someone came to pick it up when they could. So I need to look in both areas.

C. H. KENNEDY went to that area called Little Prairie, Mo due to trouble with the train lines per my grandmother, his daughter. Do you know if there is a listing somewhere that would show deputy U S Marshall's in this area?

Thanks

There is no record of Mr. Kennedy being a US Marshal anywhere in the U.S. It's possible he was a deputy US marshal but certainly would not have been the first in northwestern TN or eastern MO. The District of Tennessee was created on 1/31/1797 and in the early 1800's was spit into the Western, Eastern and Middle districts. In MO the district of the Territory of Missouri was created on 3/3/1805 and later in the 1800's divided into the eastern and western districts. Your Mr. Kennedy, if he was a deputy US marshal would not have been the first and if attached to TN probably wouldn't have been sent into MO since they had their own deputies.

I am seeking information on Cenus Hardy KENNEDY who was supposedly the first U. S. Marshal in the Northwest Tennessee area and the bootheel of Missouri. He was residing in Lake County and was requested to go to Pemiscot Co, Mo. because of trouble there. This would have been around 1890 to 1910. Does anyone have any information on this or know of a place I could go to research this. Thanks for your assistance.

There was a period of time that Calvin went to the aid of a cousin Alfred Polk in around Lamar, Colorado who worked for the JJ Jones Ranch. Alfred was in jail, waiting for trial when he contacted Calvin in the Texas Panhandle to come help look after his family. Alfred had killed a couple of cowpolks. They spent some time in the Mountains and on the run in the Oklahoma Territory (No Man's Land) before Alfred went in and turned himself in. One of their crew killed a Mexican man for beating on his wife when they dropped down into the Texas Panhandle one night. Quite the story. Fran

Hi Bob: Sorry I've been so long in answering. I've been (tied up) by doctors, etc and now feeling a little more like myself. I have someone proof reading what I have put together on Calvin Warnell Polk and friends. I found a complete sketch of most of Calvin's young life via friends such as Charlie Siringo, James East, (later sheriff of Tascosca, Texas. and brother's journal published in Trail Drivers of Texas./This winding and long journey has inspired me while listening to Willie Nelson's I always Loved cowboys" which fit the life they led. James was on the
LX ranch with Calvin when Calvin was a youth. I think he took the cooking job from Calvin when he buried half a bushel of burned beans and sourdough bread in the front of the dug out they shared. I laughed and cried with Cal for the winter. He was a spirited youth as well as Charlie Siringo who ended up a Pinkerton Man. When I get published I will let you know. I did find pictures of all of them in various publications all with handlebar face whiskers. Yours Fran

I AM ALSO TRYING TO DECIPHER CALS HANDWRITING ON A JOURNAL HE WROTE. HIS BROTHER ALSO WROTE A JOURNAL SIMULAR TO CAL'S FOR THE BOOK (THE TRAIL DRIVERS OF TEXAS VOL 1 2ND ED. BEGINING ON PG 120. These interviews or journals were taken for the reunions of old trail drivers and cow boys on the trails 1800's. Frank's story goes along with Cal's but Cal has had so many things that I loved, a real character. I'm writing about him for publication but, a lot of research is going into into it. I know he is buried here in Holdenville, and I thank you for the information on how he got killed as there were so many in the newspaper (seemed to be a hot time collecting bootleggers at this period and few got killed.) Frank verifys the lightening killing one of the trailbosses in Kansas. He is eighteen years old in 1876. Sounded like he tried to protect his brother all he could. What got me stuck on this was working on the history and cattle ranches around Moteebie and Miami, Texas -X IIX and the Goodnight Ranch. T. Boone Pickens owns the property the the -X was on. The first man to ranch that piece of property died in Canada after driving 3,000 head and gangrene of a wound on his foot set in. I am now trying to find a news clipping of Cals Death and the bridge falling into the Colorado River near Austin, Texas during one of Cal's last trail drives. Flood and too many cattle was the reason, I just wanted the story. Also somewhere I found reference to Book Tulurosa having details about Stinking Springs, New Mexico and the capture of Billy the Kid. Have you found any other than Cals Journal about that? fcook2@aol.com

Fran,
I am Gary Montin and Cal Polk was my great grandad on my mothers side. I was born in Holdenville and am now retired. Just bought a place in Connerville, Ok. and establishing a Pecan Orchard.
I am looking for any pictures that may be available for Calvin Polk. Thought you might know where I could find.
We have his memoirs and my brother (Bill) is retyping them for the kids.
The family story goes " that Cal lent his pistol out to a friend and when it was returned it contained 6 rounds instead of the 5 rounds he always kept in the chambers. The empty chamber was always on the firing pin. He took out 5 rounds and pushed the cleaning rod into the barrel and the 6th round hit the firing pin and shot the rod through his head." Not a good way to go for a law man.
Anyway, thats the family line on the death that my grandmother told me.
Hope you have recovered from the broken hip.
If you have any other info, we (the family) would appreciate it.
Take care,
Gary

Hi Fran, I'll be happy to give you the info on the Polk family in Luling. Calvin was my ggg.uncle; his sister, Clara Virginia Polk Smith was my g.g.grandmother. I also have some intersting info on Cal after he was in the posse that captured Billy the Kidd.
Calvin's father Warnell was from Arkansas, the son of Taylor Polk. According to Clara Virginia as told to her granddaughter/my grandmother- Warnell traveled to Texas with a Barnett cousin to see Texas at the age of 16; orginally to Bastrop Co. I'm unsure how he ended up in Caldwell Co., but according to family history, Warnell liked Texas and decided he would stay. So he wrote his family a letter and told them he was staying. I'm unsure if he ever visited home again. Warnell was living with a distant Polk cousin in Caldwell Co. in 1850.
The Polk family actually lived in Prarie Lea, Caldwell Co., TX when Calvin was a born and he was a child. Luling was not established until the late 1870's. The Polk family moved to Luling in early 1880's.
I do not know who the girl in Lockhart was. Cal married Anne Hampton of Guadalupe Co., TX. They lived in Praire Lea area before Cal and Anne moved it IT, OK.

What wonderful luck. Hi Polk descendant. I am not a kin to the Polk Family but, am at this moment recouping from a broken hip and wrist. I just retired from Library Director in Holdenville and have worked with the Historical Society several years. To keep from going crazy, I started to try deciper an old Journal of C. W. Polk written from Jan 26, 1896 -1901/ I would certainly love to learn who the girl was that jilted Cal in Lockheart, Texas and who he finally married. He broke my heart when he described her running off with another man on the day he was to buy the marriage license. I've been with him at the -X Ranch, on the trail and wondering through his early years. A wild and free soul he was. He only gave his brother Frank's name, but I found that Frank was listed on a book "The Trail Drivers of Texas. Vol. 1 2nd Ed. I found this by chance on the web. Both the boys were young and wild it seemed. While looking for cattle ranches, drives and doing research for T. Boone Pickens ranch in Panhandle of Texas, I found the simular details of neighboring ranches. I have a very rough photo copy of Calvin's Journal dated Jan. 26, 1896. It was never finished, and now I find he died 1904..so he may have fallen ill on me. I was trying to put together some of his family in Luling, Texas and their origin. Thanks Fran Cook

Caleb Lawson (Loss) Hart - U.S. Marshal in OK about 1910-1920 era

Caleb Lawson (Loss) Hart was a U.S. Marshal in south-central Oklahoma, apparently in Murray County OK & he lived at Stratford. Loss was reportedly part of the posse which hunted down the last of the Dalton Gang after their famous attempt to hold-up the bank at Coffeeville, Kansas. Loss is credited with firing the shot that killed Bill Dalton. I would like to find out more about Loss.

Also, seeking additional information on George W. Cox, who was Deputy Marshal in Tillman County OK, 1906-1913. He lived about 5 miles east of Manitou in Tillman County (this county is northwest of Wichita Falls, Texas). His great-granddaughter (now 86) recalls that this job of Deputy Marshal required him to travel long distances by horse and buggy and to often be gone from home. As a connection to Loss Hart, George W. Cox's daughter Georgiana married in 1898 to James Henry Milton Hart, who was the brother of Loss Hart.

Any additional info would be appreciated on either of these Marshals.

Do you have any info on Frederick Gottlieb Wannenwetsch of Caldwell and Coffeyville KS? He is listed as 'martial-city' of Caldwell on the 1900 Census with his 1st wife Elizabet[Derwin]being married for 11 years in 1889 in Caldwell. He may have been in Caldwell as early as 1883-6 at the end of the Chisholm Trail cattle drives - he left his Baltimore MD family after 1880 Census - was a cowboy in TX prior to settling in Caldwell - still being listed there in the KS Census of 1905 with his 2nd wife Nevada[Giles] - then moving to Coffeyville where he was Chief of Police under several mayors according to his obituary. I would like to find a specific date in Caldwell.

Yes, he was my g-g-grandfather. I have a copy of his journal and he had an interesting life. His journal starts off when he was about 6 years old, around 1869 and goes thru to about the early to mid 1890's. The most notable story is when he was volunteered to go on a posse to capture Billy the Kidd. When he gives an account of the hunt and capture, you know that he was there, because others that wrote books gave a close account of it, but they make it sound as if they were the heros. Cal dosen't, in his journal he gives an account of being there and telling the truth whereas all there had something to do with the fight and capture. Other accounts of his time on cattle drives could make or match a movie or TV show with Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood in "Rawhide"), from Indians to cattle thevies to bad weather. As for "Peanut Polk" I don't know. Cal's boys were either in law enforcement or in some local government position, but in Holdenville, Hughes County, Oklahoma area.
Bill
cwcox56@netzero.net

She thought for Gov. or Lt. Gov. but is no longer sure that is correct.
He presented each of his first cousins with identical, beautiful vases made in OK. to commiserate their stay.
My great-grandmothers is still in our family and will be mine one day.
Looking for information on Charles Ambrose (Charley) Burns. Family history has it that he was a US Marshal, IT under Judge Isaac Parker. I do not have the dates. He lived in Marshall County, Oklahoma, so the time period would have been between 1873 and 1889. Thank you for your help.
