For a current book project, I'm trying to trace an African-American woman, Emma Boyd, born in slavery in Oxford, Georgia around 1848, and then held in slavery in Summerfield, Alabama. Her married name by 1870 was Emma Sanders. The 1920 census lists her (or someone who appears to be her) as residing in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. No trace of her in the 1930 census, so I presume she died between 1920 and 1930. In 1920 she is residing with her son, Dr. W. L. Long, a dentist. I see from on obituary that Dr. Long perished in a fire in Pine Bluff in July 1952. I live in Massachusetts and am new to Arkansas research; I'd be grateful for any suggestions from chapter members about research strategies (including cemetery records). I hope to visit Arkansas this summer to research this, but am not quite where to start.
