My relatives were at the Dunmore Estate between at least 1846 and 1850. The wedding record of Joseph Nichols and Mary Walker in 1846 lists James McFarland and John Legget both of Dunmore as witnesses. If anyone has information on the Nichols or Walker families I would like to hear from you.

I am trying to find any information on my great uncle, Roy Walter George CARRINGTON, (b:8 Mar 1907 in MOLONG) his parents were Blanche Emiline LITTLER and Walter Charles CARRINGTON. Roy was a State Ward and was boarded out to several farms in the Maitland area between 1919-1923. In 1923, he absconded from a farm in HINTON never to be heard of again. I can't find anything on him after 1923 and any information would be greatly appreciated. Warm regards Sandra

Headstones are not official in anyway, you can put what ever you like on them. I have seen different names, different death dates etc. Perhaps she was registered as Elizabeth but called Louise? Perhaps they are 2 different people? Perhaps the transcription from the headstone is not complete or correct?

Ann

Hello Louise

I had a look at the death registration from the courthouse & found that she was actually registered as Elizabeth Fallon Ormiston, died 6 July 1892 Day Street East Maitland, 23yrs, 3mths, br. 8 July 1892 CE Cemetery, East Maitland, b. Sydney, died of phthisis.

When you go to the BDM Index her parents are given as Charles & Isabella.

Ann

Dennis & Mary McCormack

I am tracing the family of Dennis & Mary McCormack (nee Fitzgerald). No trace of their marriage has been found but they were apparently married at Wollombi about 1851.

Their Children were:

William Bernard (c. 1852) - no information has been found on William except that he is shown on Dennis' death certificate as being 38 at the time (in 1890)

Thomas Frederick (c:1853-1923) - did not marry

Dennis Michael MCCORMICK (b:1855-1928) – Married Sophia Walton in 1892

Catherine MCCORMICK (b:1857) - no marriage or death has been found

Honorah MCCORMICK (b:1860 - died: 1940 at Redfern) - married Joseph Henry Bourke at Branxton in 1883

Margaret McCormack (b:1862-d:1932) Married Charles Patrick Dilworth 22/04/1889 (my GG Grandparents)

Ellen MCCORMICK (b: 1864.) married John Heber in 1884

Patrick Arthur (1867-1919) married Ellen Dowd 2/10/1888

John MCCORMICK (c 1871) - no information has been found on John as yet

I am particularly interested in determining if my Dennis McCormack is the same Dennis McCormack who arrived on the John Barry as a convict in 1839. The only information I have for my Dennis, is that he had been in the colony for 50 years, which makes his arrival in 1840.

http://www.baker1865.com/McCormack.htm

The family settled in and around Cessnock

Johnston/Foster - Descendants of Margaret and Charles Foster. Margaret was the daughter of Bridget Hogan and Antony Johnston (Jonas).
Emily BAKER - Joseph FERNANCE descendants

The William Baker-Neptune 1790 Descendants Group is organising a family reunion for all descendants of William Baker in June 2010 at St Matthews Windsor. In conjunction we are publishing a book of stories about the descendants of his children. I am co-ordinating the book on John Thomas Baker and am looking to contact any descendant of John's second child Emily BAKER who married Joseph FERNANCE on 11.6.1861 at Wollombi. We also recently published the William Baker Register which contains approx 10,000 names. Many are from the Maitland area, especially Wollombi. I would love to hear from anyone who would like to contribute stories of their ancestors for this publication as we hope to represent as many descendants as possible. Please contact me at via ancestry or direct at bmsavill@bigpond.com
Regards,
Bev Savill

Well - I must tell you that they were married on 9th June 1857 in Jerry's Plains & my g.grandfather Charles James McBow was born on 13 Mar 1869 at Jerry's Plains.
Also I have only been able to find the "Adam Lodge" arriving in Australia on 30 Aug 1841 which would have been too late for Ann Irwin's arrival for she married Richard Callaby on 7 Sep 1840.
I hope this will be of some help to you & I would appreciate any other info. re Peter Charles McBow that you may have as you mentioned in your email.
Jan B.

I don't know a lot about the Townsville McBows - although I was born there -but I have a cousin who could probably help in that direction.
Regards
Jan. Barber, Brisbane Qld.
Yes, he moved to the house on a triangular block at the corner of the intersection of Sawyers Gully Rd and Old Maitland Rd. The house has since burnt down and been replaced. The block has been subdivided into two.
The original post office was a wine shop on Old Maitland Rd (since burnt down), then the Farrell's residence for about 50 years, then two other houses for shorter periods, one being where Mr Bowen lived.

Hi probable cousin Kerri, my name is John Dodds (born Sydney 1948) so too young to be on your list BUT
MY GGG Grandfather was a James Dodds arrived free 1822 on ship Britomart, Singleton Land Grant #123 in 1824. It is now an open pit coal mine on Maison Dieu Rd just north of Singleton He had a brother John born 1804 (I think)
in Heiton MIll , Roxburgshire, Scotland, near Kelso. Father James Dodds born?? d Jan 14,1814,
mother Helen (Eleanor) GRAY b 1772 or 3 d.26July 1949 in maitland. (at her son Alexander's home "Maison Dieu" - House of God- also the name of the Heiton Mill in Scotland!)
James & John's youngest Brother was Alexander 2Apr1814 d? Arrived on ship North Briton on 2Dec 1832. He was a Member of Parliament for Maitland for many years. Also 2 or 3 sisters.
James John & Alexander's mother Helen arrived in 1836 I think.
My incomplete records show that John MAY have owned the property ROWFOOT (sometime between 1822 and 1833), south over the Hunter of Singlton He married Agnes Holmes in 1831 later married Emma Sophie MARTIN in 1841 John & Agnes had a son James in 1832- NSW ref 1832#880 Vol18) He died in 1913 in Scone (I think)
I think James the son may have married Isabella YOUNG (NSW Ref 1859-2906 Also had a son James (ref 1874#29665) in Scone
HOW does this John info match with yours? I have NOT verified any of it!!

I never tracked tjis branch of the family since I came from the James branch. Email me at Doddssanford@sbcglobal.net (in San Francisco, I have a sister still in Sydney)if we match. I have a little more on Alexander & mother Helen. & all the James line thru me.
In answer to one of your questions. The Maitland Pioneers list info could have come from anywhere, most including unvalidated contibutions from who knows who.

I too am descended from Dr Frederick Harpur and his wife nee Elizabeth Finnis. My direct ancestor is their eldest child Sarah Harpur who married into the Evans family. I have found the NSW birth registration of Fanny H Harpur but not bought it because she was not a direct ancestor. I would have expected her middle name to be Hornsby as she has ancestors of that surname.

My biggest query about the family is the suggestion that Frederick Harpur was an illegitimate son of George IV. But who was his mother? I haven't found her.

At some point he went bankrupt and had to sell the family home. They both are buried in Maitland. Looking for more information on John and his ancestors.

Johan Herrmann was a Lutherin Minister and possibly a carpenter from Germany. Some of his descendents stayed in Maitland but the rest moved. He came from Mecklenberg with 4 other ministers and died in West Maitland. He was married to Tryphena Wenban. Any info on his ancestry would be very helpful.

It is important to note that proper protocol requires that the descendants should be contacted, or at least many attempts made to ascertain if such descendants can be located, before indulging in any self serving glorification. Thus, descendants should have been contacted, to ask their permission, before placing Veterans Administration grave markers on the graves of presumed Civil War veterans, such as John Henry Graydon, or Robert Farmer. Also, it is best that research is proven to be fool proof, before declaring a person to be a Civil War veteran. Reliance should be placed upon documents that are genuine and authentic, instead of altered copies of military records.
Everyone wants research to be genuine and competent, so that we are not led on a wild goose chase.
I am no expert or even anything close to such a description, but, as an avid student of the subject, I would like to see proper, thorough and competent research conducted at all time, without any wild guesses, assumptions, fabrications, or altered documents being passed around as genuine. That is the least we should expect from any person who lauds himself as a "researcher."

Hi

Looking for any information on William New. Was living at 35 Hannan Street Maitland in 1930 and was a labourer according to Aust Electoral Roll. Was in a relationship with Julia Ann Hannan. Julia died in a house fire in Hannan Street in 1927.

Children to this relationship are:

24138/1884 ELEANOR M. HANNAN

26360/1887 ELIZABETH A. HANNAN

20480/1890 EDITH M. HANNAN

21330/1892 WILLIAM A. HANNAN

20046/1894 ELIZA A. HANNAN

23002/1896 EDWARD H. HANNAN

4518/1899 RUBY G. HANNAN

Although the children were born under the name Hannan they all used the name New/Newe on documents (Marriages etc)

This info is all I know about my grt x 2 Grandfather and his family. If anyone can fill in the missing pieces I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards

Aussielost
