Louis Denver OH>IL>WY

Looking for information on g.g granfather Louis Denver, aka L.S. or L.D. Denver born around 1855. Convicted of stealing a horse in Uinta Co., WY and spent 4 years in Joliet prison 1889-1894. Wife (Minnie Kutch Denver) divorced him and remarried and children were sent to boarding school at Grand Junction, CO. and know nothing else of their father. The second record I find of Louis, he is in the Wyoming State Prison for "obtaining goods on false pretenses" in Savery, WY (Carbon county). He supposedly had a second family here but I only know the name of the eldest boy, Roy, who went to Oregon. Louis disappeared after he was released from prison in 1902. Both records at these prisons list his birthplace as Illinois and his parent's birthplace as Ohio but I have been unable to find him on any census.
Any help/advice appreciated.

Death date for Marshall Eugene Boswell

I am seeking the medical and burial records of Marshall Eugene Boswell, born August 4, 1840 in Rochester, NY. He enlisted in Company A 4th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers
at Whitewater, WI on April 25, 1861 and received a disability discharge in Baton Rouge, LA August 24, 1863.

Mr. Boswell suffered from disease contracted during the Civil War as well as alcoholism and opium addiction. His military records indicate that he was a resident of the "Grant County Soldier's Home" in Marion, IN in 1907 other records indicate that he was there in 1912. According to the Indiana State Archives the correct name for this facility is National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. I don't know whether this was a consecutive stay.

I am interested in records on Mr. Boswell while he was at these military homes, whether he is listed in the Veterans' Graves Registration, and his date of death.

Mr. Boswell is a blacksheep because after being married to my ggrandmother for nearly 30 years and 9 children he married Amorit Homedew Bates (Orton) who had a habit of marrying civil war veterans for their pensions. He forgot to dissolve the marriage to my ggrandmother.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can anyone help me out?

1. Elva Eaton of Deer Isle, ME had a child by "Fred Wood[s]". Nobody knows anything about him for certain - he may have been a sailor or working in a logging camp nearby.

2. My family suspects that one of our ancestors, William Everett [or his father Nathaniel Everett] who traveld seasonally from Maine to Massachusetts for work was most likely a bigamist.

3. Samuel Wardwell was hung for witchcraft during the Salem With Trials of 1692. I have tried to trace his family [and his wife Sarah Hooper's] back farther but everbody has different charts! Does anybody else have an idea of his ancestry?

4. There's a legend that Capt. Mark Haskell's boat was once boarded by pirates off of the New England coast. They were supposedly looking for a relative of his wife, Jemima [Tilton], who was "in trouble". Can anyone verify/elaborate on this story?

Thanks!
~J

Murder of AL. Deputy late 1870's PLEASE HELP ME.

John Pharris Cruce,( my gg-grandfather)
John Cruce was an officer in the KKK somewhere in Alabama in the late 1870's. After the war during Reconstuction the Law men were all Yankee's and the local sheriff framed John Cruce for the murder of a woman that John and his family knew. In the shoot-out John killed the deputy and escaped. The Alabama KKK got the word out to other members of the KKK in other states and John was furnished places to stay and fresh horse's through the states of Alabama, Mississippi,Arkansas and into the OK.Indian Ter.

He soon moved back into western Ark. changed his name to John Laneer and sent for his wife and children,mother-inlaw and a negro lady who was a nanny. They took a train to Johnson County Ark. His wife was Nancy Green and her mother was Bensia Ann Green, father was Shadrack L. Green.

In 1975 one of the Laneer decendants who lived out in Colorado stopped here in Johnson County to speak with my grandfather Joseph Stallings who remembered his grandfather John (Cruce)Laneer well. The man had a copy of the Wanted poster for John Cruce but he didn't leave us with a copy and I have no way of knowing where to search for a copy. Could anyone out there help me out in showing me how to go about finding a copy for myself?

PS John was never caught and died a free man in 1913.

Please e-mail me direct if you can and thankyou very very much.
Neal Fowler

Lankford Brothers

I am a new member, duly qualified by virtue of my grandfather's and his brothers' lives of crime. My grandfather was Wilford J. Lankford and his brothers, Arthur, Claud(e), and Caton (aka Clarence) Lankford (sometimes known as Langford).

The Lankford brothers began their lives of crime as young men in the early 1900's in and around the Missouri and Illinois areas. Eventually, they all served time in the slammer. My great-uncle Caton is said to have been a genius or near-genius and is said to have taught the children of prison personnel, as well as foreign diplomats, foreign languages, etc. (He served his time in Joliet.)

Owing to divorce and their lives of crime, the Lankfords were estranged from my family. If there is anyone out there who knows of my great-uncles and any wives or children they may have had, I would so appreciate any information anyone could give.

Thank you.

Would anyone know of the Latham line, Thomas Jefferson (jeff) Latham. Born in Hughes Springs, Cass County, Texas around 1883-4. Married Ruby Ella Owens Latham. Lived in the country outside of Vivian, Louisiana
Had four children: Marie Ella Latham Powell, Cleve Ray Latham, Allie Mae Latham, Chiles and baby girl, Lucille that died in infancy.
I have searched for our grandfather, Thomas Jefferson (Jeff) Latham for many years with no luck. I cannot find anything on him past the 1920 census.
Besides Boss Buck I have two more to add:

#1 James Milton Shafer (my dad):
FROM OHIO STATE REFORMATORY HISTORICAL CONDUCT RECORD
July 8, 1918 - Feb 21, 1919.

Two days before his 18th birthday James was arrested in Cambridge, Ohio on July 24, 1917 on charges of larceny after stealing a lot of brass valued at $40.00 from the C & M Railway. James pleaded guilty. His inmate# was10671
During his crime was with inmate #10672.
Paroled: Nov 13, 1918 (parole#11734)
Released: March 10, 1921.

#2 Thomas Davis (my paternal great-grandfather)
FROM THE CAMBRIDGE JEFFERSONIAN
September 17, 1891

C. L. McCulley, for some time past has observed that some person was taking goods from his grocery and wareroom on Steubenville Street. Accordingly he set a special watchman to see how it was done, and who did it. Deputy Marshal Brookman Scott was the watchman and on last Friday night he saw a man enter the wareroom. He followed and after a hard scuffle in which he was considerably scratched and after inglicting a flesh wound upon his antagonist he captured a man, who proved to be Thomas Davis, a plasterer, and citizen of Cambridge, who had always before owned the reputation of an honest, industrious man. He is afflicted with Asthma and not always able to work. He was a poor man with a large family to support. Davis is in jail, awaiting the action of the grand jury.

Old newspaper clippings

I have a dilemma -- while researching old newspapers I began saving old newspaper clippings -- even the ones that didn't pertain to my family -- in the hope that they might help someone else. The clippings are varied and deal with events as well as people. There are definitely some black sheep in there, but a lot of others as well. I've contacted some of the state/county specific websites about posting them, but unless they are VERY name/location specific, they aren't wanted. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I might be able to post these old clippings where they'll have the best chance of being seen by the masses? Any ideas would be welcome. I just really hate to see these go to waste without the opportunity of being "found."

I had no idea what for so I wrote the Ohio Historical Society and they sent me photocopies of all his prison records. They are an excellent source of family info not just prisoner.
Eliza Stroud 1860's Who and Where is her Father.

Eliza Stroud was born 1861.Married General Marion Ayers February 21, 1877, in Sevier Co., Arkansas. I am looking for her parents.

Family story is this. Eliza's mother was mostly Irish. Not sure of the nationality of her father. He was described as tall, dark, black headed, wearing a black mustache. He had gone to serve in the Civil War as a confederate soldier. He was in the war for four years.

Ther wasn't much mail during the war years and very little mail service for several years after the war. The men that went with him to join the war efforts had survived the brutalities of the war and he talked them into telling his wife that he had not survived therefor would not be returning. However, about four years later he did come back very much alive.

During this time, 8 years, his wife had remarried and was now the wife of Jim James's grandfather. Eliza was a young girl and did not remember much about her father before he had gone to war, but she said that one morning a man rode up to the yard gate one day and hollered hello. Eliza went to the door but did not know who he was, she told her mother she did not know the man. When her mother went to the door and realized who it was she threw her hands up over her face and screamed and then started crying as if she were crying over a coffin, all of this without saying a word. He spent the night in their barn and left early the next morning.

As he rode off they noticed that he was wearing a gun, however this was not that unusual for men in those days.

If you know anything of this family I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Ellen GRAY Robinson, MS

Maternal Ancestor Line:
AYERS, BRIDGES, BOX, BRUMLEY, DACUS, DAVIS, EVERETT,
HENDERSON, LITCHFORD, MATHIS, McRAE, MILES, MILLER,
MORGAN, NEWELL, PETTIGREW, PICKETT, PULLEN, REES,
STOTT, STROUD, STUART, TURNER

Paternal Ancestor Line:
GRAY, HOOKER, HUBBARD, McCULLER, OTT, WOODRUFF

A Broderbund "Family Tree Maker" User

I have three ancestors who might qualify as "Black Sheep" --

George W. Routt (g-g gf) was murdered in 1874 by Achilles Brown in IL. Mr. Brown was convinced Dr. Routt was philandering with his wife. After researching Dr. Routt's life, I met a "cousin" who is not sure his ancestry is Brown or Routt as the community still carries the thought Dr. Routt "played around" and "withheld medicine for female favors"!

I have two ancestresses accused of witchcraft. One, Mary Sanford, was hung. The other, Mary Parsons, was accused and acquitted in Boston after representing herself.

Your Society is very interesting to me and I look forward to your response,

Jane Routt Power
President General, Associated Daughters of Early American Witches

Lucinda Vinson/Vincent

I am trying to find whether my 3g grandmother, Lucinda was born a Vinson/Vincent and did not marry (although she should have), or if she married one and was divorced. She was bornin Little Creek, DE, circa 1804, and died in Barren Creek between 1860 and 1870. There appears to be a close connection between her and Ephraim Vinson/Vincent, also born in Little Creek and died in Barren Creek. The first marriage I find for him is in 1837, but in the 1830 census he had a female and two males under 5 (possibly Lucinda and her two oldest children, George M. born 1828 and Perry M.born 1829/30). In 1840 he still had the two boys, his new wife and her daughter, but the other female is not there. In 1850, George and Perry are with Lucinda, and Ephraim has no males in his household who are the ages of the two he had in 1840. There is no record for Ephraim marrying prior to 1837, and no record for anyone named anything like Lucinda marrying anyone with the surname of Vinson/Vincent (they couldn't spell). Any ideas?

I have always heard we were
related to the Custers thru the Ball family.

Anyone out there related to the Custer Family?

I am not sure he is a black sheep, but he is sure famous!

William Neville Hamilton, England, 1889

My great great great grandfather, William Neville Hamilton (b. abt. 1854), is listed on the Black Sheep Index (http://www.lightage.demon.co.uk/BSINOTES.htm), with the event occurring on 1889. He does not appear on the 1891 census with the rest of his family--his wife, Caroline, is listed as the head of household at this time--but reappears for the 1901 census. I am trying to figure out what happened for him to be on the BSI and to not appear in the 1891 census. He was living in Kensington (MDX, England) in 1889 (and for many years before and after). As I am in the U.S., I am having difficulty tracking down this information, and I was hoping someone could suggest a new approach.

Thanks,
Jill

Barrington, NH scandal?

It seems that sometime during the time period of the later 1700's there were Leathers individuals in Barrington, NH, whose behavior was such that several of that name changed their surnames to Walker, Tyler, Freeman, etc. I would appreciate tips as to how to find out what happened. We may have a 'black sheep' there. A recent correspondent said his grandfather spoke of a murder.

Disowned

Helen Mar GALLOWAY, b November 5, 1824 near Dunbarton, Scotland; m William BURGESS in Detroit, MI 1851; d February 11, 1904. Helen's obituary states that she was the last living of 14 but I have located only 3 of her siblings: Walter GALLOWAY who never married and d abt 1881 in Bueno Park, UT; Elizabeth GALLOWAY, b abt 1835/36 near Dunbarton, Scotland; m 1st a LIVINGSTON(E) and had one daughter, Kate, b abt 1853 in ONT, CAN, never married; d March 30, 1915, Kings Mill, Elgin Co., ONT, CAN; m 2nd Joseph STEVENS; Elizabeth d Feb 21, 1892, Kings Mill, Elgin Co., ONT, CAN; and Jane GALLOWAY, b abt 1819 in SCOT; m James ROBB; d July 19, 1894, Spirit Lake, Dickinson Co., IA.
The family story (and I'm beginning to believe it is true) is that Helen Mar was sent to Detroit to live with an aunt because her parents did not approve of the young man she had fallen in love with in the Toronto area. When Helen fell in love with William BURGESS and married him her parents disowned her because William was "just a milkman" (a dairy farmer) and that was not good enough for their daughter. I can find no record of any of the four GALLOWAY siblings in the Toronto area or in Scotland. Clues or suggestions would be appreciated.
Escaped murderer

In 1833, Drury Hafford was accused of killing James Standley in Hopkins County, Kentucky. The two Hafford brothers had quarreled with Standley, and (while working on road clearing), Drury struck Standley with a hoe and killed him. Later, Drury escaped from jail. His brother (who was to appear in Circuit Court as an "accessory") skipped bail. Nothing further was heard of the two, although the sheriffs of Hopkins and adjacent counties were notified to be on the outlook. Where did the Haffords go? Any further information about this event would be appreciated.

Sam Strand
I have for years tried to locate the whereabouts of my GGG-grandfather Sam Strand, b. 1826 in Strand parish, Rogaland county, Norway. "Folk i Strand is the "bygdebok", i.e. genealogical records for the parish, and vol. II says the following about him (loose translation):
"Samuel Thorsen Strand, born 1826. He called himself Sam, and was a sailor. In Feb. 1869 he jumped ship in Liverpool and probably went to the US, where his 3 brothers lived. In 1887 his family stated that they had not heard from him in some 10 years and that they didn't know whether he was alive or dead. Rumor has it that he drowned. Local legend also says he was a pirate."
Sam's 3 brothers all originally lived in Illinois, and all served in the US Civil War, 2 with Henshaw's Light Artillery and 1 with 82nd Illinois Infantry. Sam was never married in Norway, but had 2 illegitimate children with two different women. The oldest was my GG-grandfather Cornelius, b.1848.
When I was a little boy (in the late 60's) and got a little wild, older people in the village just used to look at each other and say: "Well, you know, he's one of Sam's", so I guess he might have been a local Black Sheep.
If anyone knows anything about this guy, or have any suggestions, please let me know. He may also have used the name Thompson, as one of his brothers did.

The only source on his affiliation to the US so far except local legend is in a database of "Emigrants over Stavanger Harbour" which lists him as "Sam Strand, born Strand, Norway, son of Thore and Anna Strand. Was a sailor, pirate and drowned

Sincerely,
Stein

Is someone missing a black sheep named Nathan or Nathaniel S. Brown from TN??

My gggrandfather went by the name N.B. Smith and N.S.B. Smith, the story goes he changed his name (we believe by adding the Smith to his name) to avoid being arrested for a murder he committed in Knoxville, TN. I know he lived on a plantation there and had at least one brother, and was born 1-10-1852 in TN. After the murder which we know would have happened before 1879 he moved to Arkansas, married Emily Bachelor. She passed within a few short years of the marriage and he married Francis Pearlee Thompson in Mena Arkansas, then moved to Daisy OK with Francis and her family and remained in Ok til his death. We know the murder had something to do with gambling, but have not been able to find the case file or find out who was wanted for the murder to verify his real name and possibly find out more about his family. He would tell no one anything, no one knew his mother's name and he said his dad was John Smith, which we knew Smith was not his birth name. Severel clues lead us to believe that Brown was his given last name and if Nathan wasn't his first name the initials were probably N.S. Brown. If anyone has any ideas we would love to hear it.

The Beverly James Dickerson in my tree, b. abt 1820 was the son on Beverly James Dickerson and Nancy Jane Watts. Probably born in KY, he lived with his family in Washington Co., KY until before 1860 then became a tavern keeper in Jefferson Co., KY (see 1860 census). He died in about 1863 in Illinois, killed probably because he was a rebel. His wife was Martha and he had numerous children, some of which may have gone to Howard Co., MO. I'm interested in sharing information on the Dickersons.

Confederate pension application, which states her husband died in Kansas City, date not stated.

My grt-grdf is also ezekiel YOUNG aka as e.e. or e. YOUNG who moved to MO around 1875, married Olive Sweaney of Jackson Co. MO, had one son Edward Lee YOUNG. He was a veternarian in private practice but he also worked for the Holmes Brothers transporation serve in KC. He died in 1897.

From research it appears these ezekiels are actually one and the same, making my grandfather a bigamist. Does anyone know about this man and where he may have been between the time he left VA and settled in MO?

Andrew Henry Saucier (AKA Henry Marvin Saucier

Andrew Henry Saucier, born 17 May, 1871, the son of Henri Severin Saucier and Elizabeth Tanner Saucier of Hancock County, MS. Apparently this fine upstanding citizen, direct descendant of one of the founding fathers of the State of MS ( Jean Baptiste Saucier, Born 4 Dec, 1674, who landed at Biloxi with D'Iberville in 1699) got in a fight with a man and thought he killed him. He promptlyskedaddled to the State of Louisiana leaving behind in MS a wife and two children. When he got to LA, changed hi name to Henry Marvin Saucier and he married again (without benefit of divorce) and proceeded to father 9 more children, the oldestof which is my grandfather Joseph Henry Saucier, Sr., born 29 December, 1900. When he was about 80 years old, he finally told my Grandfather about his other wife and children. My Grandfather took him back to MS to visit with his children, his first wife had died in the interim, and discovered that the tale was TRUE except that the other fellow in the fight DID NOT DIE! If he had just hung around for a few days, he would have found that out! So, on the one hand he's NOT a murderer but the old scoundrel did go on to father NINE illegitimate children who had no idea they were illegitimate! I was about 9 years old when he died in 1958, and I remember he was very closed-mouthed. Wonder why???!!!

Missing Uncle - possible Black Sheep?

I have been trying to trace my husband's uncle, John Henry Paulton, but with no joy - I have come up against a brick wall.

John Henry was born in 1907 in Aston, Birmingham, England and was the elder of 2 children (his younger brother, Bertram Alfred, was born in 1909 and was my father-in-law).

As I understand it, John Henry had a quarrel with the rest of the family and disappeared from the family home around 1930. The rest of the family refused to have his name mentioned in the house and this was carried through right up until 1990 when his younger brother died.

My husband was baptised in 1949 and we are pretty sure that a picture we have includes John Henry. This would fit in with the fact that his mother was dying and he might well have been allowed to see her before she died. After this he disappears from the face of the earth.

All the indexes for deaths and marriages for the UK have been searched from 1923 to 1998 but there is no trace. My only other lead is that he MAY have emigrated but to where and from where I have no idea.

I really would like to find out what happened to him. Neither my husband or I have any idea and we have no argument with him, so it would be good to make contact and, perhaps, find a lost part of the family (the rest is traced back to 1680).

Where did Irma Jack Medley fly off to? He was born in Buffalo Valley,Putnam Co.,TN on 24 Sept 1899, married my grandmother, fathered my mother, left the Navy and left both of them in MO. His last letter was from Ft. Sam Houston,TX with photos of some of his missions he was flying for the 12th Observation Squadron in 1927--also a couple of plane accidents. He was to have gone to his mother's family in Paden,OK and married an old sweetheart and had a son-Jack.

Divorce papers were never found and after 30 years of searching, he and his resting place are still missing. I have gone through a dozen military offices and they have no records and will not comment on my photos. I have a box of his photos that were sent to my grandmother in a trunk in the 1928-29's to NM.

Any suggestion to get the FAA-Army Air Corp to break their scilence would be welcome.

JOSEPHUS NELSON my family- skeleton-in-the-closet

Josephus Nelson is my great-great grandfather who married his 2nd cousin Esther Eliza Nelson. He was 'addicted to the habit of intemperance' and tried several times to kill his wife and once his two children. Only evidence I found of a second child was in Letters of Affidavit re: Esther's divorce by Act of General Assembly in 1834-35. No evidence as to sex of this second child, an infant, just called 'infant' in those letters.
Eldest child was Joseph and only surviving child of this marriage. Josephus never paid his bills, was put in jail for a $3.50 IOU and still nothing paid until after his death in August 1837. He wrote a Deed of Trust in 1834 and 1834 to his sister Henrietta Sparrow and her son-in-law Oliver S Dewey for money to pay his debts. Henrietta ended up with his plantation and Oliver Dewey all the rest of the Nelson land. Nothing left for son Joseph. Would love to find Dewey descendants, and also other Sparrow descendants. Josephus' plantation home now "Blackwell Point" house in Oriental, Pamlico Co. NC.

Proposed closing of Florida Library Archives

Identity theft is a poor excuse to shut down libraries and archives. I work in the funeral industry, I have to warn families to close out credit cards for deceased persons since thieves read the obituaries, then apply for credit in that name before the banks are aware of the death. Should we not have obituaries or should credit card companies do a better job of screening before they issue new cards? If you're really going to steal an idenity, a visit to any cemetery will give you lots of names and dates. Just how paranoid are we to become?

Atlanta Federal Prison records for late 1800s: How to find

Oral history states that my great-grandfather P.G. (Patillo Golightly) MAHAFFEE, I am sad to admit, did time in the federal prison in Atlanta after the Civil War. The charge, my Dad told me years ago, was lynching. What I would
like to get my hands on are the records of the federal prison, which I would hope had the ancestors and other useful information....Anyone have any idea??

My great-grandfather was born in South Carolina in 1845 and died in Rutherford County, NC in 1935. I posted a photo of him and a photo of his grave and that of his wife Rose A.
Pleasant (Plesent) Webb

I am seeking any additional information that you can provide about the parents/siblings of Pleasant Webb. Thanks a million.
=============================================
Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB was born about ca 1760-1765. His son, Elias, said that his father, Pleasant was born in Ireland (not substantiated). He died between 1830 and 1840 in Ohio, USA. Around 1800 Pleasant and family came in to the Ohio valley from Rutherford County, North Carolina. In 1803 (reported to be 45 years old) he was in Scioto County, Ohio and was said to be a notorious character. Supposedly, he tried to break up a fight between James Bradley and the wife and children of James Quire (Squires). He ended up shooting Mr. Quire (Squires). After this incident at the Licks, he was driven out of that area. He is also said to have been a Tory during the Revolutionary War. Pleasant was in GreenupCounty, Kentucky in 1820 and in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1830, he did not appear in the 1840 census, so it is believed he died between 1830-1840. Pleasant (Plesent) WEBB and Unknown (Margaret BLACKWELL?) had the following children: James WEBB (1786), Elias WEBB (1788), Thomas Hanley WEBB (1795), Aden WEBB (1797), Temperance WEBB (1799), William WEBB (1801), Margaret WEBB (1806), Sarah (Sally) WEBB (1809), and Baker WEBB (1811).

Larry D.
I am trying to find out when and where Dillard WILLOUGHBY died and if there are decendents.

Dillard was born December 17, 1891 in Alexandria, DeKalb County, TN. As a young man he got into trouble, robbery of some sort and spent time in a prison in TN. At a later time my grandmother's aunt got a letter from a prison warden wanting to get permission for Dillard to write to her. She didn't agree to give permission and her daughter wasn't sure of what prison it was but thought perhaps one in Michigan. I have pictures of Dillard and his wife Mary (surname unknown). My grandmother said they were not married. Dillard was living in the 1950's as my grandmother had gotten a letter from him. Have searched for information on him for a long while. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Theodore F. Schumacher

I am trying to find out any information that I can about Theodore F. Schumacher. He was born in Washington,DC between 1886 and 1887. His parents were Antoinette and Theodore Schumacher. Theodore Schumacher senior committed suicide in front of young Theodore F.
Theodore F. was a scoundrel, cad, and possibly a bigamist. In 1920 census information he is listed as married to 2 women at the same time. He is listed with his wife Margaret, their child, and his father-in-law at said father-in-law's DC house. He is also listed as a boarder with his wife Mildred in a house in Baltimore.
We know he was legally married to Margaret and later divorced from her. However, no marriage record to Mildred has surfaced.
Later that year, Mildred gave birth to their daughter. No record available.
He packed the family, (Mildred and baby), and moved to Buffalo, NY area. At some point in the next few years he abandoned Mildred and the little one.Efforts to track him down were fruitless.
Family "info" says that he was married at least 3 times. That he might have served in WWI. And that he was a cook. That he had a restaurant in the San Diego area. And that he died in California. When and where?
His mother's obituary did not list him with her children. He was still living at the time. His siblings had not forgiven him for his misdeeds. (Which ones they were upset about is anyone's guess)
Mildred's child had contact with him when she became an adult sometime in the mid 1940's. She was disappointed with the encounter.
Does this black sheep ring a bell with anyone?
Would love to piece together more about him since he is my son's great grandfather. Thanks.

I wonder if any BlackSheep members would be able to help me! I am a novelsist and my second book, PALE AS THE DEAD, is being putlished in the UK in the summer. It is a mystery novel which features a genealogist as the main character. I have been asked to write articels for magazines focusing on people who have discovered criminal ancestors, how they feel about this and how it has affected them/their lives. If any one has any stories they would be willing to contribute, I woudl be delighted to offer a signed copy of the book in return for any that get used.
Kindest regards,
Fiona Mountain
I don't know the date, but would have been late 1920's to mid 1930's. This took place in Bedford County, PA. The murder trial took place in Cumberland, MD...or so I was told. Marshal was aquitted.

I am trying to find the records of a female relative who was sent to a prison or institution for killing her husband in Kentucky in the early 1900's. She supposedly died there and the family did not claim the body. If anyone has suggestions on how to contact an agency, I'd really appreciate the leads. This is in reference to Columbia Harman Howard who killed her husband Jackson Howard in Martin County, Kentucky.

Gr-Grandma Was A "Shady Lady"!

Hi!

Great Grandma was 1 of 8 children & I've traced all their whereabouts & descendants - all except for her; the one I descend from. Why? Because, as one uncle put it "she was a shady lady", but I'm sure all that refers to is the birth of her daughter (my grandmother) before she married. And when she did marry, it was to another man. Gr-Grandma was Elizabeth (Liza) McGregor, b. Jan. 14, 1887 in Argyll, Scotland. My grandmother was left to be raised by relatives as Liza married a McArthur & went to live in/near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Her husband left her, and daughter Margaret, a year later. Liza worked as a housekeeper. She was employed by or was a partner to a Mr. LaRose. Margaret died (1940s) giving birth to a son whom Liza then raised. Liza died aged abt. 90 years, in a nursing home, in the 1970s - I have no idea where she was buried. I also wish I knew what became of her grandson, who would be 60ish now. Thanks for anything.

Mary

Lost Henderson/Wilson

Looking for my gggrandfather. My ggrandmother was Alice Wilson, m. Augustus W. Bishop around 1889-90. Her father was Henderson Wilson. Family oral history has it that he was originally Wilson Henderson, but killed a man and moved to FL "for a couple of years", where he changed his name. At some point, he married and moved to Decatur Co., GA (or maybe moved to GA and married), where he raised his family. I can find no record of him or his family in Decatur Co. at all, or Grady or Thomas Counties...(Grady was formed from Decatur and Thomas, abt. 1905. Decatur & Thomas formed around 1824-1827)
Alice, according to my grandfather, was born 8/4/1864 and died in June of 1918. We believe she had at least one sister, Elifair, and possibly 2 brothers, one called "Coot", given name believed to be A. B. According to an uncle, Alice had "at least 2 brothers, and they both named a daughter after her [Alice]".
We have a family photo taken about 1893, of Augustus W. Bishop and Alice Wilson, and all of Augustus' children except the last 3 (Alice was his second wife). Also in the pic are Grandpa Gus' parents, Ephraim and Mary Elizabeth Hukins Bishop, Elifair Wilson, "Kaney" Wilson (I believe this is Canty Wilson, who married "Coot") Gus' brother Ephraim (called "Eef"), a woman who is identified as Alice's mother and called Lottie Wilson, and a man who has been called Alice's father, Henderson Wilson, though it is possible that he is actually her brother (he looks far too young to be her father).
For whatever reason, one of my aunts is absolutely adamant that she will NOT discuss our family history, and she will NOT tell us anything she knows, and she does NOT want to hear what we find out.
Any help would be much appreciated.

thanx for your time
lmj
GenData7@aol.com

Maybe his name was Charlie Wyatt and maybe he did kill his pregnant wife in Faulkner or White County sometime bet. 1877 and 1890 leaving 2 little girls. His wife's name may have been Hogan. There are various tales, something did happen ,that is for sure. He is said to have escaped prosecution, never heard from again but one tale says he married many times and had other children. My grandmother, Mary Eliz. or Mary Nel ,was one child, the other may have been Mattie. My grandmother was an extremely private person and would not speak of her past but did admit the killing happened. No newspaper accts. exist at the historical library in Little Rock. Anyone out there know anything about this Wyatt? Please email me at bjleski@texoma.net

Am looking for information and relatives of John Rufus Little Sr. He was reported to have killed a High Sheriff in S.E. Oklahoma or N.E. Texas over farm forclosure. Little and Martins of the family know what happened but are not forthright about giving out any information on this matter. He is my grandfather. He fled to the hills, is all we know. He married Siney Martin. Every one called his mother Siney, but it may have been Cynthia or Sindy or Cindy or the like. They were both part Cherockees. They both died in the influenza epidemic of 1921 to 1923. Leaving six children. they were not taken in by either the Martin or Little families. Only my father was adopted by the Riley family in Oklahoama City. He has a sister named Pauline Lambert residence unknown. He also had a sisters named Olie and Ruby. Also brothers named Clarence, Felix, and I think the last was Frank (but am not possitive about this last name) I would appreciate any information any one may have about my family. I am despirate to find this information out because my father is 83 years old and I am 55. He has not found any information on his parents. I would like to find them before his death.

A friend is looking for information on her biological grandfather, Earl Clark. She knows he trained at Camp Dawson, WV probably around WWII, that he is from the Baltimore area and if still living would be in his early or mid 80's.

GGF CAIN WAS CAST OUT? OR LEFT THE MENNONITE/AMISH ORDER IN LATE 1880'S. THIS IS ALL I KNOW. I DON'T KNOW IF THE NAME IS ORIGINAL OR GIVEN AFTER HE LEFT. NOT A CLUE ON OTHER SITES ABOUT CAINS IN THESE SECTS. FAMILY TRADITION HAS AT ONE ROBERT PER MALE SON. SO HE COULD BE A ROBERT. OR COULD BE A PIERCE? THAT'S MY GGF'S NAME. POSSIBLY FROM IRELAND DURING THE FAMINE. I'M JUST OVERFLOWING WITH INFO ARE'NT I?? ANY CLUES WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

great grandparents

Seeking info on a child born in 1873 probably in Milton, Rock County, to Sarah Jane (Doty-Hurd) Codding. This child was conceived when she ran away with her husband's brother.

Her brother in law was sent to prison in Wisconsin, where this all took place, but pardoned due to illness and the fact that the offended brother refused to press charges and
accepted his wife back into his house even though she "was in an interesting condition."

Once we found this out, it took a while to find out the married couples names (we knew "the brother's name"), and it turned out to be our great grandparents.
