Thanks, Ann, for your help. I've sent to DAR Library for more information about a David Davis (1749-1822) who married 1) Eleanor Brooke and 2) Elizabeth Garrett Brooke. One of his descendants did receive DAR membership through him. A lot of clues point in that direction.
