DAR Record Copies as Proof

Can anyone advise the offical DAR position of using "Record Copies" as proof for a specific lineage. I'm asking this on the context of the following three web citations below. I'm finding opinion but no conclusive citation from the DAR.

1. Any DAR application submitted before 1976 should be treated as inconclusive. Any DAR application accepted before 1976 is no longer acceptable "proof" on a new application and should not be cited as "proof" in any other context.

Any DAR application submitted after 1990 may be regarded in the same light as the Rock of Gibraltar. Each fact stated has been backed up with primary evidence, including the marriage of the applicant.

The many-volumed Lineage Books have not been con-sidered reliable sources for over 15 years and DAR does not accept them as sufficient citation/proof on any line.

The exceptions to the above mainly consist of a genea-logical anomaly . . . the information contained on pre-1976 applications was proven by the standards in force when the application was submitted. The fact that those standards are no longer acceptable is, in some limited contexts, irrelevant. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bbunce77/D...

2. Please note that, generally, full documentation will be found only for those applications submitted since the early 1980s. Applications submitted during the early 1900s will not have accompanying documentation and, therefore, you will have to use a Long Form and submit proof documents. http://www.californiadar.org/chapters/mojave/research_and_ge...

3. Keep in mind that early standards of genealogy were far looser than they are today. Even as late as 1958, applicants did not have to submit proof of their parents' and grandparents' vital statistics.
....... It wasn't until 1984 that everything the applicant sent was kept. http://www.newberry.org/genealogy/news/default.asp?id=253&am...

Thanks in advance,

Vince

two supplementals with same documentation

Can I submit two supplementals together with one set of documentation for the first 6 generations? I have two sets of supplementals like this (2 on each of my parents' side of the family). The first 6 generations are the same then the last 1 or 2 generations are different. Can I submit them together with one set of documentation or must I keep each one separate with a complete separate set of documentation? It seems redundant to submit it twice since it is digitized. It seems that by putting the two together would save some work for the DAR staff. Thanks.

I have the amount of his bounty land warrant and where received and Ancestry has the image of the roster from Capt Fenner's Company.

All I need is source information for the place of his enlistment -- which appears to be Hillborough District of North Carolina.

I appreciate any assistance.

Hezekiah COBURN lookup request

Hello, I'd like to know whether Hezekiah Coburn of Connecticut was ever included in anybody's DAR application materials. Note that there was a different Hezekiah Coburn who was a soldier out of Massachusetts. He was a distant cousin of the one I'm seeking. They have sometimes been confused in notes of correspondents to whom I've written.

Here is the info I have:

Hezekiah COBURN, b. 15 April 1750 in Windham, CT, d. March 1834-April 1835 in Lewis, Essex Co., NY; m. Mary BILL 17 Jan 1771 in Windham Co., CT. Mary was b. 6 May 1750 in Lebanon, CT and d. 1820-1830 in NY.

Hezekiah resided in Windham Co., Connecticut during Revolutionary service. Later he lived in Williamstown, VT (from c. 1790-1805) and Lewis, Essex Co., NY (from 1805 on). He briefly moved to Orangeville, Genesee Co., NY about 1820. But he moved back to the town of Lewis before 1834.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Jerilyn

Can anyone give me some advice on how to find my Grandmother, Edith H. (Prather) Davis through the Daughters of America? Or what the difference is in DOA and DAR?

She was in the Star Spangled Banner Council #7, Daughters of America, Seat Pleasant (MD) district. I've also seen it listed as the Capital Heights district.
She was a member in Jan 1918, as a Prather and in 1928 as Davis. I also have a printout for Nov 16, but no year, when her children were presented, after her death. I can't find the year for this.......which is hurting my research.

If the DOA is related to the DAR, her ancestor would most likely be Allen W. Prather.
Supplemental Question Regarding Abraham Sankey

Is there any help available for supplementals? I know new members applications are the most important, but I have a problem getting a supplemental verifed. Is there any chance of help on this?

Here is the story:
I submitted a supplemental for Abraham Sankey of DE. Unfortunately, I sent a list that showed he paid a fine for not reporting for 2 out of 6 muster calls of the New Castle County Militia from Dec 1778-June 1779. After it was rejected by the DAR genealogist I found that Abraham Sankey signed the Oath of Allegiance in August 1778. (Oh how I wish I had found that BEFORE sending in my original data) When I replied to the rejection letter my reply was that Abraham signed the Oath, and the fact that he paid a fine for 2 out of 6 muster calls means he MUST have reported for the other 4.

The proof was rejected a second time because signing the Oath was before the fines list. I know I have 2 years to resolve this issue, but does the 2nd rejection sound logical to you?

Delaware was not the best in keeping records of their militias. It was mostly the delinquent lists.

My question: is there any hope for Abraham Sankey? I know he was a patriot and would like to have that acknowledged. Any help in where else to lok for proof of service after June 1779? I appreciate your time.

In the 1970-80's I joined DAR thru Charles Howard but have misplaced my papers and wondered if you could look up his information. I believe he was from Kentucky.
_____________

I also wondered if you could look up Henry and Pierce Perry. Other than names I don't know very much about this family as I just learned on Monday that they were my gggg and ggggg grandfathers, respectively. Henry was born on Virginia, possibly in Orange Co. and was married to Mary Singleton. Pierce was married to Mary (maiden name unknown).

Thank you for your help.

Susan Gross
from KS

Refusal to Sign British Oath of Allegiance - 1777

I have a direct ancestor who moved from New Hampshire to Nova Scotia years before the American Revolution. He was prominent in political activities and was denied his seat in the House Assembly because of his refusal to sign the Oath of Allegiance in 1777. He was engaged in the shipping business and his ship was seized by the British. He reportedly died as the result of foul treatment by a British Officer in 1780.

Would my ancestor's activity be considered by the DAR for approval? I understand that some who did not actively serve, but supported the war effort by signing certain documents are considered as acceptable.

Thank you,
Carol in Arizona

I have found a lot of sources in the form of compilations in local history books or historical society journals and in abstracts that are published in books. Are these acceptable? For example--one is a will. The original is barely legible and I transcribed it for my own use. There is a book of will abstracts from Orange County New York that lists the people named in the will and their relationship to the deceased. Would a photocopy of this page and the book title page be sufficient? Likewise, many old church records have been compiled in book form. Can I use these? Thanks.

Greetings ! We would much appreciate assistance, in ordering the following DAR files:

Robert Stockton, b. 9 Oct 1737 in Franklin County, PA and d. 3 Jun 1821 in Washington County, PA... descent would be through his son Robert Stockton (1771 PA - 1844 PA), who married Maria Gallion. I understand he "served as a Private in Captain James McConnell's company, Cumberland Col, Pa., militia, in 1776, under Colonel Joseph Armstrong."

2) John Chandler, b. 25 Nov 1755 in VA and d. 9 Dec 1843 in Taylor County, KY. Descent would be through his daughter, Dorcas Chandler Saunders (1780 GA - 1863 KY),.. who married Elijah Saunders. I understand he qualified through "patriotic service", though no clue how.

Truly, any assistance is so very highly appreciated.

-Tony

I need to know if the listing shows who his parents were, his wife, his children, and where he was originally from. I need to make sure this is my line and I will appreciate the help anyone can give. Thanks

Military records for Andrew Snoddy

I am searching the records for Andrew Snoddy, born 1750-1755, in North Carolina. He was listed Volume 163, Page 338 of the Roster of soldiers from NC in the Amer. Rev. War. The census record shows he died 1818 in Natchitoches, Pecan Point, Louisiana, USA. I thought he was BORN in Louisiana, but may be wrong about that. I need to find a name for his wife, cannot find that in any of my searches. He had a son who was named John Andrew Snoddy, born by 1818, and this son was in the Civil War. Any help with place of birth, wife, children, parents will be so appreciated. Thanks

I visited the Warren County Ohio Genealogical Society last week, and they couldn't find record of my G5 Grandpa Beltshazzar Dragoo having served. The Ripley Chapter of DAR erected a monument to him in the early 1900's. Did he serve and if not why would DAR have erected a monument to him? He was born 10-14-1751 and died 4/28/1836. He resided in Brown County Ohio but moved to Warren County when he and his wife Martha became Shakers. The Warren County Genealogical Society just erected a monument to the Shakers who had served, but didn't include Beltshazzar. The lady was as perplexed as I once I showed her a photo of the monument.

The John Furlong that died in the Battle and is my ancestor is the son of a Robert Furlong of VA, b about 1745 or so. He married a Martha, who subsequently married a William Crum after my John's death. I have all of William's paperwork where all is laid out. I would like the right John Furlong, Maltross, honored. The tombstone where they are buried has the husband's name then the wife's maiden name with the words "his wife" after it. Would a photo of this suffice as a source to prove marriage?

I am also trying to verify the Revolutionary service of JOSEPH HUTTON, JR. He was born 28 May 1720 in New Garden, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died 13 March 1786 in Newberry, York County, Pennsylvania.
I was told that he served in the rank of a Colonel in the 2nd Company 5th Battalion.
Because he was such a staunch Quaker I am questioning this service record that was told to me by a third party! I would love to be able to verify if he did serve in the war and if there are any records of his service.
Thank You,
Pat

Isaac Samuels, Pa. and Va. lookup requested

Please look up Isaac Samuels who married Elizabeth M. Pennybacker. He was born in 1762 in Pa. and died in 1819 in Shenandoah Co., Va.

He is thought to have settled in Shenandoah Co., Va. about 1783.

OBITUARY of ISAAC SAMUELS, ESQ.
Died--on the 30th September in the 57th year of his age, Isaac Samuels, Esq. long a respectable citizen of this county. In recording the death of this invaluable citizen, the writer of this acknowledges that he knows of no language sufficient to convey to the mind an adequate idea of his worth. To have a knowledge of this it was necessary to know the man--and those who did so will acknowledge that in the sphere of action in which he moved this country has never experienced so great a loss. He is another (which may be added to the list of those revolutionary patriots that have paid the debt of nature) who assisted in establishing the independence of our country, and was actively engaged at the death blow of Britain in the capture of Cornwallis where he no doubt displayed that heroic firmness which ever characterized him whether as a parent or a husband, a citizen of the commonwealth, or a public magistrate, in every department of life in which he acted, he was equally exemplary. As ready to communicate as to receive instruction, he was at once a pleasing companion and a valuable friend; he spoke as a philanthropist should speak, for he felt as a philanthropist should feel, and the intensity of his judgment with the observations he had made on mankind were so correct that his words flashed conviction on the mind of his hearer. He took a pleasure in giving advice where he saw it necessary and a departure from virtue never passed under his observation without reproof. By much reading and reflection his acquired knowledge was extensive and this knowledge he was ever ready to impart for the benefit of his fellow creatures. Never did the poor and needy call on him for assistance in vain. Ever ready to relieve their sufferings and alleviate their distresses he sought them out and administered to their comfort. It was an observation of his own, that one of his most pleasing reflections was that he had been of service to mankind. Such sentiments as those have been recorded of other great and good men and why not of him? In the sphere in which he moved he was as great and as good as any man, for he did all that it was in any man's power situated as he was to do. He might have been distinguished had he thought proper, as those who knew him were eager to bestow upon him honors, because they were aware he would do honor to them, but his love of domestic life and those sweet associations of ideas that arise in the breast of a good man when surrounded by the family that he loves represt the thought that his happiness could be increased by any public honors that could be conferred on him. Those which he did accept were taken by him rather as a duty which he owed society than for any vain preeminence by which he might be distinguished. He had perhaps too humble an opinion of his own abilities, for men, and men of discernment, certainly held them in higher estimation than he did himself; these persons were at all events assured that he was possessed of inflexible integrity, a penetrating genius, pure patriotism, and an ardent zeal for the public good. Constitutionally firm, that firmness was directed by him toward exemplifying how a republican ought to live. And in all his public and private words and actions he was equally consistent. He was a friend to virtue--a lover of the human race, and his death has left a chasm in our society--which we shall in vain look for to have so well filled.
Such was the man whose loss we in common deplore and if it be true that men are rewarded in another life for the deeds done in this, he now rests secure in the bosom of his Savior and his God.
(Joseph H. Samuels appointed administrator - Settlement September 6, 1831)
Source: The Woodstock Herald, Wednesday, October 6, 1819.
Published by Maj. Benjamin L. Bogan (A cousin of George Washington)

His brother Joseph Samuels served in Captain Samuel Noland's Company of Loudoun Co., Militia from 14 May 1782 until discharge on 14 July 1782. (As this is a badly worn and torn paper it is possible that Isaac pulled service with his brother.
Virginia Soldiers of 1776, Vol 3, page 1254 by Lewis A. Burgess.
