This is late but I have never browsed this forum before. The big question is why would I want to join a society? Pre web, you needed a society so you could research their library. Now the come-on is mostly giveaways like scholarships. I will join the Huguenots just so my Huguenot ancestor can be an official Huguenot. The fact that he was a Huguenot does not make him one until a member uses him to gain membership.
The other problem is you usually discover the societies later on in your research. If there was something local that I was interested in, I would probably join. Being a historical snob, I am mostly interested in pre Civil War while where I live CW is the focus. Our whole area was nothing but farm land until about 40 years ago.
