Hi -- I am the Education Chair of the San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society on the California Central Coast. In May we are having a session on dating photos, inviting members to submit dated and undated photos for a group discussion as detailed below.
Here is the page describing the program from our website www.kcbx.net/~slogen
San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society May 7, 2005
Meeting Program: Deciphering Old Photographs
During the 12:30 PM Research Class, we will present portions of the Maureen Taylor video on Dating Old Photographs. All participants will receive a correlating outline/handout.
During the main meeting program, we will project members’ known dated photos for a 10-15 minute Training Session (please note: these known dated photos may also be used in a future SLOCGS fund raising publication). The training session will be followed by 30-45 minutes of Mystery Photograph Discussion. Our goal? Date these Mystery Photos and also find clues within the photos that can further your research.
For our May meeting training session, “Deciphering Mystery Photographs,†please submit:
A. Up to 10 old photographs, dated 1840-1920. We will use some of these photos in our May presentation and possibly also later in an SLOCGS fund raising publication on dating photos. The photos should be copies (we cannot return them) of your copies or originals. You can get copies made at Kinko’s or any similar print shop. With the dated photos, please include:
*Name(s) of subject(s); no living subjects, please
*Date (within 5 years; if you cannot confidently date the photo within 5 years, please do not submit)
*Location (optional, be general or specific, whatever you know; if location is a guess, please say so; examples: New York City, New York, or Illinois [guess], or Norway)
*A short caption explaining occasion for the photo (optional – could be a wedding portrait, for example)
*Comments on photo type, framing, and matting (again, optional – examples are Ambrotype, Tintype, Carte-de-Visite, Cabinet Card)
*Copy of comments, business listings, stamps on the margins or backs of the photo (optional)
B. Up to two undated mystery photos to be presented at the May meeting for a “dating†discussion. Mystery photos should be submitted as hard copies and also as overhead projector transparencies (you can get these made at Kinkos or similar print shops). Also include any concrete information you have on the photo: names of subjects, birth and death years of subjects, location (can be a guess), occasion for photo, where found, and so on.
With either A or B above, please note:
We need a signed and dated statement giving SLOCGS permission to use the photos in a future San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society publication.
Deadline: April 30, 2005
Send to: Cheryl Storton, 581 Newman Drive, Arroyo Grande, CA 93420
