I've been volunteering with my county Gen Soc for about a year. I see the membership aging and dwindling, along with interest in projects. I assume this is happening everywhere??? What have other Gen Soc been doing to keep interest and attract new interest?

Has Any One Ever Dealt with The Orange County,New York Genealogical Society?

I have sent them information on my GGreat Grandfather Caleb Tracy Briggs with his information of his birth,date,town all the information I had on that.And what they sent me was photo copies of possible Great Grandfathers wills given the dates.This was of March of this year.Now what came back for me in April.This what the explaintion she has for me:"I find nothing at all in the Warwick Area Circa 1810-1820 if any Briggs.And she included the 1820 Census Record,but none were in Orange Co,NY at that time". What I was seeking was Caleb Tracy Briggs parents names and if he had any siblings then there names.Now I know that would be hard to do when he was born in the 1810.I do know they tried it just frustration on me since I have tried of thinking everything to find clues to what his parents names are or that of brothers and sisters.

For those from the Downriver area of Wayne county and doing research try the Downriver Genealogical Society's library. It's housed in the Taylor, Michigan Library on Pardee Rd. Their hours are limited because it's run by member volunteers and you know how hard it is to get volunteers. Tues, Weds, Thurs from 1 to 5. They have a ton of obit's from the local papers. I know some go back 50 to 60 years. Might be even farther. They also have marriage announcements. If you're from the area think about joining. It's only $15 a year and they do trips to Salt Lake City and Allen County Library. Here's their web page http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~midrgs/drgs.htm Check out the publications they sell but if you don't want to buy them then go to their library and you can look through them for free.

First Families of Ionia County

Honor your ancestors by becoming a member of the
First Families of Ionia County!

All you need to do is prove you are a direct descendent of your ancestor who was living in Ionia County before 1881. Application forms are available by E-mail at http://ionia.migenweb.net/ICGS/icgshome.htm
Or by writing to: Lori Fox, F.F. Correspondence Secretary
3011 Knoll Road
Portland, MI 48875

The application will have instructions and forms to fill out. It will give places to look for records to prove you are a direct descendent of your ancestor. You will need to provide evidence that your pioneer lived here. Documents such as birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, tax records, voting records and wills can show that someone resided in Ionia County. These records are considered primary evidence and newspaper articles, obituaries and published genealogies are considered secondary and will help to fill out the information. Make copies of these documents to submit with the application, along with the $15.00 processing fee. If you are not already a member of the Ionia County Genealogical Society, please include a membership fee of $15.00. Additional help is available by contacting Lori Fox who is conducting a free workshop on June 12 at 9 a.m. at the Historic Freight House in Lake Odessa.

The completed application must be received by September 1 at the following address:
Ionia County Genealogical Society
First Family Committee
P. O. Box 516
Lake Odessa, MI 48849-0516

Upon approval of your application, you will be invited to a First Families banquet held in October and you will receive your Certificate listing the names of your First Families. If you cannot attend your Certificate will be mailed to you.

We look forward to receiving your application and adding your First Family’s name to our roll of pioneers of Ionia County.

FirstFamily Committee
Ionia County Genealogical Society

National Genealogy Society Conference

I am subscribed to several blogs and have been reading with much interest about the National Genealogy Society Conference held last week in Salt Lake. How I wish I could have gone!

One of the blogs "The Ancestry Insider" told about what he considered the highlight of the several days of presentations and displays. He loved it all and was very positive and enthusiastic about all the info he learned, and I believe he was also a presenter at one.

So I was surprised when he said that the highlight for him came in the middle of the sessions. He said:

So what was the high point of the conference for me? “Amazing Grace.”

In the video that proceeded it, “Clan McCloud,” a father of Scottish descent related the story of his son, Jared. At age seven Jared announced his desire to learn to play the bagpipes.

“If you’ve ever heard bagpipes in a confined space, you’ll know why we’ve created basements,” quipped Jared’s father. As a result of Jared’s interest in his Scottish roots, and despite the cacophony, the entire family reconnected with their Scottish heritage.

And Jared did, eventually, learn to play the bagpipes, as we can attest. For as the lights came up, there was Jared and three additional pipers, standing amidst the choir. The sad, soulful strains of the pipes filtered through the large hall like the mournful cries of the lost.

In its turn, as if falling into the march behind the pipers, the orchestra joined in, soothing the cries of the pipes with hope that dangers, toils, and fears could be relieved.

As the men of the choir joined the march, we heard in words our hopes secured: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound…”

Then the women added a descant, lifting us heavenward. “The Lord has promised good to me…”

Now all in unison. “…I shall possess within the veil, a life of joy and peace.”

Finally in full voice with majestic orchestration: “…Bright shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise…”

Surely God was in the moment. It is never to be forgotten.

This is taken from his blog which you can read at
http://ancestryinsider.blogspot.com/

You can also listen to the *truly* incredible arrangement of bagpipes with Amazing Grace, sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODpDh-Wx5GE

I promise this will be worth your time.
Karen

Belgian Red Star Line Museum looking for emigrant photographs, memorabilia and stories (1873-1934, Antwerp to New York)

Belgian Red Star Line Museum looking for emigrant photographs, memorabilia and stories (1873-1934, Antwerp to New York)

Between 1873 and 1934 the legendary shipping company Red Star Line transported more than two million passengers to America. Poor European emigrants in search of the American Dream, but also affluent passengers travelling for business or pleasure left for New York. They departed from the city of Antwerp (Belgium, Europe), where the port warehouses of the Red Star Line were situated.

To this day those Red Star Line warehouses are preserved. For many passengers they represented the last stop on the European mainland. It was there that, just before their departure, the emigrants travelling in third class underwent a medical examination and were disinfected, while clerks scrutinized their documents.

The Red Star Line buildings are protected monuments. They are part of the communal memory of innumerous new Americans. They had long been standing empty and were pleading for a new purpose. In the spring of 2012 the new Red Star Line Museum | People on the Move will open its doors at this historic location. It will be a place of remembrance, experience, debate and research into international mobility, both past and present. The story of Red Star Line and its passengers will be brought to life once more.

Do you have any old Red Star Line items such as postcards, luggage, diaries or photos?
Found reference to an organization by the name of Maennerchor Society in the Feb 4, 1904 Philadelphia Inquirer. Can someone tell me if such a club still exists in Philadelphia and if it's possible to request information on someone that I expect was my great grandfather? I apparently was concerning a (German-American Charity Ball).

Someone asked about this on another message board site:
http://mailman.acomp.usf.edu/pipermail/genealib/2009-Februar...
That reply stated:
"The DAR Library has many manuscript files from the Institute of American Genealogy (called the "Virkus Collection"). Much of this has been cataloged, specifically the family histories (Part IV) and charts (Part V).
"There are also many boxes of files of information submitted for a never-published 8th volume of the Compendium of American Genealogy. Some of these files are cataloged, I chip away at the others. This sounds to me like it might have been part of the family histories section, but I find nothing cataloged as such now. Please note that much of the Virkus/IAG material was dispersed before coming to the DAR Library.
"Hope this helps - feel free to write if I might be of more assistance.
Jane Pearson
Manuscripts Cataloger
DAR Library"
I am in receipt of a Library Catalogue for the Institute of American Genealogy, 440 S. Dearborn Street, Chicago, IL. There is no publication date, but I am guessing it's from somewhere around 1940.

Does anyone know anything about this Institute? Is it still in existence, and if not, what happened to the records? Thanks --

Hello, SEPA Researcher,
Apparently, this society still exists, but it has moved to Doylestown.
Maennerchor Society
40 E Oakland Ave
Doylestown, PA 18901
(215) 348-3817
Known as the Maennerchor (German) Singing Society, it had met at Maennerchor Hall, Franklin Street and Fairmount Avenue. It was founded 15 Dec 1835 by Philip Mathias Wollsieffer.
I found the information in a article in the NY Times from 1885 which talks about the 50th Anniversary of the Society in Philadelphia.
Barb the Librarian

Independent Selleck family historians, genealogists and hobbyists from around the world have been engaged in research for many years. They have eagerly shared their discoveries by exchanging countless letters, telephone calls and e-mails.

In Oct of 1994, eight Sellecks met in Michigan and established the Selleck Reserchers Association (SRA). Its purpose is to research the Selleck family history around the world, and to SHARE our collective knowledge with others.

The first General meeting of the SRA was held Aug 1995 in Middlebury, VT. We have since met in Florida, England, Michigan and Connecticut. This year the meeting was cancelled (by e-mail and snail mail vote) do to gasoline costs and inability for members to gather. We hope to have another meeting as soon as the economy settles down.

We publish Selleck genealogical material.
Conduct biennial general meetings offering education and research opportunities.

Our group depends on participation by each member to help us know their genealogy back to their Selleck/Sellick ancestors. So we would like a group sheet's and family pedigree chart of your family to aid in the help we can give you, and maybe you can enlighten us on some new Selleck lines and letters, photo's, family stories etc.

I am the membership chair and another Selleck Sentinial is about to be published. We publish two or three times a year and sometimes send out Occasional papers as new research is discovered.

Cost to join is $10.00. Check can be made out to Selleck Researchers Association. We also have a CD of past Selleck Sentinels in PDF form for sale to members.

Membership Chairperson
Irene Church
9642 Holland Rd
Taylor MI 48180-3068

American French Genealogical Society NEEDS YOUR HELP!!

BTW ~Just so you know right from the start, I am not affiliated with the AFGS in anyway but I have gone and used their spectactular library. It is arguably the largest collection of French Canadian records and resources outside of Quebec. And you don't need to have a US Passport to go there.

It is a resource, the loss of which, would leave a very big hole in peoples' ability to research their French Canadian heritage and ancestry.

The American French Genealogical Society has an opportunity to purchase the building that they presently are located in and create a truely top notch French Canadian research and cultural facility. It will be a tribute to all our hard working ancestors who came from Quebec to work in the mills and industries of Rhode Island, New England and other places in the US. They came, built new lives for themselves and their families and created many opportunities for those of us who have come after. Without their courage and hard work, many of us would not enjoy what we have today.

Please go to the AFGS site and read about their vision for the future of the AFGS.

http://www.afgs.org/AFGSBuild.html
I can see some allure to those features. I liked the suggestion about holding classes on identifying pictures. The fact that you are growing would suggest that people are buying what you are selling. That is meant as a complement.

Why join a local genealogical society???

Societies vary a great deal in what they offer. In the case of our local, growing society, we offer the following to members:

Subscriptions to semi-annual Bulletin and 6X/year activities calendar;

Discounts on annual group research trip to Salt Lake City;

Discounts on Computer Genealogy Classes;

Discounts on annual Seminar admission; annual Seminar includes 5 sessions, 3 speakers at each session; nationally-known speakers;

Email list announcements of new, exciting Internet & local resources, including classes;

Discounts on publications and research hours;

Links from website to members' home pages;

Access to the Society's library facilities and resources to develop databases, hold classes, and so on.

Cafi Cohen
Education Chair
San Luis Obispo County Genealogical Society
This is late but I have never browsed this forum before. The big question is why would I want to join a society? Pre web, you needed a society so you could research their library. Now the come-on is mostly giveaways like scholarships. I will join the Huguenots just so my Huguenot ancestor can be an official Huguenot. The fact that he was a Huguenot does not make him one until a member uses him to gain membership.

The other problem is you usually discover the societies later on in your research. If there was something local that I was interested in, I would probably join. Being a historical snob, I am mostly interested in pre Civil War while where I live CW is the focus. Our whole area was nothing but farm land until about 40 years ago.
Re: Selleck Researchers Association (SAR)

We had a great Selleck Researchers Association (SRA) biennial meeting in Norwalk CT. We walked in Selleck Woods in Darien, saw some Selleck portraits in the Stamford Historical Society collection also had some talks in Norwalk area. Sessions included information on the Sellecks at Arms, Seafaring Sellecks, and Celebrating Rev. Charles M. Selleck. We took a bus and took a look at land and homes owned by the early Selleck's John and Jonathan sons of David. Took a look at the cemeteries with Selleck's buried in them. A lot of great family networking was accomplished with exchange of pictures and family history. Everyone had a great time.

We hope that anyone reading this and are interested will become an SRA member or renew for 2007 to receive the Selleck Sentinal Newsletter and be able to have a group of family to exchange information with.
Contact me for information: Irene Church SRA membership chair

Primeras Familias de Nuevo Mexico of the New Mexico Genealogical Society

Hi-

I was wondering if anybody has appied for the Primeras Familias de Nuevo Mexico of the New Mexico Genealogical Society?

Primeras Familias (First Families) de Nuevo Mexico is similar to the second program, but requires verified documentation. Researchers whose ancestors lived in New Mexico during any of the historical periods listed below may submit proof of direct descent from that ancestor. New Mexico Genealogical Society, after verifying the documentation, will issue a certificate listing the name of the researcher and of the early New Mexico ancestor. The lineage will be published in the New Mexico Genealogist. There are several categories for the Primeras Familias de Nuevo Mexico certificate:

Native American
Oñate Period 1598-1680
Reconquest Period 1692-1821
Mexican Period 1821-1846
Territorial Period 1846-1912

If so I was curious as to who your ancestor was that qualified you for the respective period. I've seen the certificates from 2001 and before.

Thanks

Joseph Mestaz-Vialpando

Philo-Celtic Society

Interesting that the Brooklyn based Philo-Celtic Society, founded by Michael Logan from Milltown, County Galway, was the basis for identifying some of my County Mayo family associates. Of course, Michael died in 1899 and his publication, An Gaodhal, ceased several years later. But an 1896 issue of An Gaodhal was the source of the information, which Jerry Kelly was kind enough to translate for me.

Michael Logan was deeply involved with immigration and Irish nationalism as can be evidenced through the pages of the old Brooklyn Eagle now available on line.

Jerry has apparently taken up where Michael left off over a hundred years ago and as far as I'm concerned, the previous and continued revival of the irish language is a legitimate part of the immigrant story.

I happen to be a member of one the last great waves of Irish immigrants to the United States and find it heartwarming to see the announcements and I hope the latest effort is super-successful.

Michael Logan, too, had his detractors, he referred to them as "Shoneens" and you may need Jerry Kelly to shed more light on the word than I can provide.
