My parents, grandparents and all my aunts and uncles belonged to the HERMANN SONS LODGE (AS THEY ARE CALLED) They belonged to one in San Mateo, California and previously in Oakland, California. They met monthly and often with dinner ande a dance. As a young child who also spoke German, I was always with them. Have great memories. In California it was called the HERMANN SONS LODGE. i KNEW NOTHING ABOUT INSURANCE. iT WAS JUST A GERMAN CLUB TO US.

I am looking for any information on the John Mehling Social Club which was in existence in Brooklyn, New York in 1896. My great grandfather, Frederich Hensch, was a member. I believe it was a German immigrant social organization but I am not sure. I am trying to trace my ggf's immigration and thought that this might help. Thank you.
Dennis Doyle

The only stand out is F of A. That is the Foresters of America. The Court Allemania relates to being a German group and the beneficial assoc is most likely a division within the group. Overall, it is a fraternal organization, not exactly as famous as the Free Masons or Shriners, but kinda in that area. It deals with insurance beneficiaries like sick children and the sort.

I have relatives who also are listed in obits as being members of theSons of Hermann. Someone sent me a passenger list for a ship called the Hermann that sailed from Germany in the late 1880's on which it appears that my relatives may have come. They came from Schleswig-Holstein in 1887 and 1888; names: Iwers, Ausmussen, Gefke. I still cannot find any info about this lodge anywhere. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa, and in Hawarden, Sioux County, Iowa.
In my GGrandfather, Herman Christen HAUBENSAK's obit it said that he held membership in the "A.O.U.W. and Sons of Herman lodges". What would it be? Where could I find out information?
GGrandfather died in 1908 in Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska, USA.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cecily
Azreen@aol.com

The only Sons of Hermann lodges I know of are in Texas. They are all over this state. It is an insurance/fraternal lodge.
They sell life insurance, after purchase you are a member of their lodge. They have a summer camp for kids and an old folks home, all are financed by the lodges. They have a monthly news paper, and it comes from San Antonio Texas.I think they have been in business for 97 years. Lodges are dotted all around Texas cities, such as Austin, Houston, Comfort etc. The Grand Vice President has a phone number listed in the paper, 18002344124. My family has been insured by them for over 40 years.
