hello Heather.

I think that there is a mis-understanding of the word Grieve. This is not a surname in the McKenzie tree but an OCCUPATION. A farm grieve was a bailiff or steward who managed a farm for the owner. The name, Margaret, is also not a McKenzie name. It came into the family when William McKenzie married Margaret MacDonald.

The McKenzies stayed in the Golspie area, except for Roderick, who went to London in about 1840 and the sons of roderick's brother, John Justin McKenzie, who went to SouthAfrica and to Canada.

It is strange that you should contact me from a 2001 posting as we have just returned from the Golspie area. I have written up our McKenzies of Balnaclach for the new Heritage Centre, which will open next weekend in Golspie.
