The croft at Balnaclach, Golspie

Has anyone any information on the tenants of Balnaclach (various spellings), Golspie in the period 1750 to 1800. According to the book by Margaret Wilson Grant on Golspie, there were Munros there in 1750. In 1762 Thomas Mckenzie was of the croft when he died, according to his grave inscription. His probable son, John McKenzie was described as a 'late tenant' of Balnaclach when he died in 1792. He was married to an Isobel Munro. The croft seems to disappear in the 1790s when it was presumably absorbed into the main Dunrobin farm. Are there any records of tenants for this period. John's son William became a Farm Grieve, possibly at Kirkton, where he was living when his sons, John Justin and Roderick were born.

David Reade
McDONALD @ Kildonan to Caithness pre 1776

McDONALD left Glencoe at time of massacre. Family story says they were later in Kildonan. Left for Caithness to escape the military conscription of many sons. Supposedly all fathers were named Alexander McDONALD back to Glencoe. Family Records from Alex. McDONALD m Jean GEDDES 1776 in Caithness suggest this man's father may have been John instead of Alexander as family claims OR the naming pattern not followed as eldest son is John (oldest son infant death John, next son John). Last child of 12 is named Alexander in this family. Does anyone have any records of the father of this Alexander McDONALD m 1776 family being in Kildonan pre 1776 and leaving because there were 8 sons?

There are George's in the Munro family before this date, so no need to remind me of these. They are probably fictional.

FAMILY OF SIR JOHN A. MACDONALD

My great-great grandmother Ann (McDonald) Murray (b. May 21, 1817 in Rogart, died January 21, 1897 in Woodstock, ON, Canada) was said by my great grandmother Murray and my grandmother Ann (Murray) Hockin to be a first cousin of Sir John Alexander Macdonald, first Prime Minister of Canada. I am trying to ascertain whether this is true and gather more information about her family.
Ann (McDonald) Murray's father was James McDonald, who died February 4, 1851 on his farm in East Zorra, Oxford Co., ON, apparently after falling down a well. I don't know her mother's name. Her siblings were John (eldest), Effy, Catherine, Alexander, Isabella and William. She married David Munro Murray (b. 1815 Rogart, d. 1878 Woodstock ON) on December 31, 1841 in Zorra Township.
Sir John A. is recorded as having been born in Glasgow on January 11, 1815 to Hugh Macdonald and to Helen Shaw of Dornoch. Apparently Sir John A's grandparents lived in Rogart. There is a cairn in his honour in the Dalmore area of Rogart.
Nora Hockin
Hi to all my Mathieson cousins in scotland and every where else,I'm a Mathieson from the Massachusetts branch of the family...I find very interesting to see how the Mathiesons, have ventured thru out the world. I'm very proud of my scottish Hertiage, and my family. the one thing my father had always told me was to be proud of being a Mathieson...for we are from one of the oldest families in scotland,,,,and as Mathiesons we have shed our blood for our clansman, and for the kings of scotland..But as I try to check these facts out, I find no mention of ne Mathiesons..So, what is the truth...this makes me wonder,,,did we as Mathiesons, fight against oppression from the english...as Wallace had done,,I've always wondered...thank you//

Hello. I am looking for any information in regards to my relatives who lived in Rogart. The information that I do have states that they lived at Aultimoult and/or Aultivuilt. Are these places or names of houses? The names of the people that I am particularly interested in are;

Andrew Sutherland (my great great great grandfather) who married Lilias. He later married Christina MacKay. My main relative came from the first marriage. His name was John Sutherland born 1825. He married twice. First wife was Mary Russell who died at age 26. They had emigrated to Australia I believe. His second wife was Isabella Harriot Gordon of Kirkcudbright.

I am intersted in anyone connected to this family; especially Andrew, Lilias and their children, but am finding it difficult to research this line so any information at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Scott Lees.

My G.G. grandmother, Christian/Christiana Clunes was born in Dornoch in 1827, baptised Wick, Caithness, 17 Nov. 1830,the illegitimate daughter of Gordon Clunes (from the parish of Loth) and Margaret Murray. This couple also had a son, Alexander, born on 1824.

Margaret was born in Dornoch circa 1798 and had a sister Elspet and, possibly, a brother Alexander.

Gordon, a slater, was born c. 1805, the illegitimate son of Captain Gordon Clunes and Roberta Sutherland, a housemaid. The younger Gordon died on 14 February 1890, aged 84, in Helmsdale, Sutherland, widower of Betsy McPherson. The informant was a cousin, John Mathison, of Helmsdale.

Christian married Ewen MacMillan from Ross and the couple lived around Dornoch until they emigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1854.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Clunes and Murray families? I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.
Lyndall

I also need
more information about the Thompsons and Dunbars.
John Ross emigrated to Australia in 1863 and I have a lot
of material about him, which I would be happy to exchange with someone who may know about his
ancestors.
Graham Surname

I am trying to search my grandmother's family. Her name was Mary MacGregor Ross. Her mother's name I think was Mary Graham and her father was James Ross. Mary Graham was from Sutherlandshire (Where exactly I am not sure) My grandmother wasborn in Cromarty 1886. She had brothers named Alexander and Angus, sisters names Jean, Harriet and Lizzie. I can't seem to find anything. Someone recently sent me info saying he found a James Ross who married a Elizabeth Graham in Cromarty and she was from Sutherland in a place called Lairg, so maybe this was her mother. Anyway if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Rodrick MacKenzie of Assynt

Rodrick MacKenzie was born in Scotland in 1808, and christened there on the 23 July 1808. His mother was Annabella Watson, and his father's name was Alexander. He married Katherine on 3 February 1835, and they had a son John christened the 29 May 1837. Rodrick and his wife emigrated to Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada in June 1840, and Katherine died shortly after two more children were born. Apparently Katherine was a MacLeod, according to an old family member, but I would like to know anything more that anyone could offer me. Any information about Rodricks brother Hector, or brother-in-law Alex MacKenzie, who both also came to Canada would also be much appreciated.

Assynt, Sutherland

I am looking for more information about the area of Assynt on the western shore of northwest Scotland.

My g-g-g-grandfather, William MCGILLIVRAY, is listed as a Miller in Assynt, about 1844. His wife is listed as Christian MACKAY. Her mother, I believe, is Jean URQUHART. Her father is William MACKAY. All these relatives appear to live in the Kilteran area.

I really don't understand how Kiltearn (a parish, I think), Assynt, Sutherland and Ross&Cromarty are geographically related.

I have seen an old map of Scotland showing Assynt at the mouth of Loch Assynt on the western shore. I was not able to make out the county boundaries very well. It did appear that there are significant terrain near Assynt.

Is Assynt inside the old Clan MacKay border, or is it at the edge of the border, or just outside?

From information I have seen it appears that Assynt is (or was) very close to the edge of Sutherland county as the MCGILLIVRAYs went to church in Ross&Cromarty county.

This is all I have. Any help in clearing up my muddy waters would be greatly appreciated.

Keith Smith
Hi,
I'm wondering if there is anyone who may know anything about the Gibsons from Dornoch, Sutherland, the earliest of this family we can find are Thomas born around 1775 and Donald born around 1788. Thomas married Isobel MacKay in 1820 and had 5 children, and Donald married Janet McKay in 1823 and had 7 children. Would anyone know anything else about Thomas and Donald like: were they related and who were their parents. Thank-You

MACKAY/SUTHERLAND FAMILIES
I am currently researching my ggg grandparents families. They were ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND and MARON (MARION) MACKAY (McKAY) married 1785 Dornoch. Children James, David, John, Margaret, Helen and Kenneth. All born Dornoch. Surnames associated with this family were Munro, Mackay, McKay, Murray, Campbell, MacIntosh. It is possible that most of the children married in the Clyne area. Any information on the above surnames would be a great help especially confirmation on who the children married.

Many thanks,

Judy.

Pearre

I have reason to believe that the Pearre family lived in the Sutherland area. James Pearre emigrated to Maryland either in the late 1690's or by 1700. He was an adult when he came because he claimed his 100 acres according to the state mandates. He named his various land purchases with Scottish names---Strathnaver, Gerioch, etc.
Does anyone have anything on the Pearre family in Scotland? The name looks French to me, but some have suggested that it was spelled Perre in Scotland. ??? Any help would be so gratefully accepted. Julia

McKay

With reference to a message posted regarding Donald "Le Malin" "Mad" McKay. He had a brother John McKay and they were peddlars in the fur country from the early 1780's. Their sister was Isobella McKay who married Adam McDonald probably in the 1750's?,near Brora, Parish Clyne. They had a son Donald "Big Donald of the Blackfeet" McDonald who is my husbands ggg? grandfather. He came to Canada with Donald McKay who may have at that time, been recruiting for the Hudson's Bay Co.In 1793 Donald McKay was sent to establish the first Brandon House, and John with James Sutherland settled on Rainy River below Manitou Falls. You may find out more about the McKay's from the Hudson Bay Archives in Winnipeg MB. but I have hit a brick wall trying to find any information regarding Donald McDonald and his parents and brothers. There is also information on these two McKays on Denny Archives, Glenbow Museum, Calgary. The website is
http://www.glenbow.org/archhtm/denney.htm.
Glenice
