Brooklyn NY - David M Drury

In researching David M Drury I found newspaper articles about his membership in the Masonic Lodge. There are several notations regarding his membership or service. In an article dated 19 August 1899 The Brooklyn Eagle...Titled Royal Arch...stated he was Secretary of the Faternal Union of Anoited High Priests - had been - Master Mason in Progressive Lodge - past High Priest of Progressive chapter - member of DeWitt Clinton Commandery and of Mecca Temple as well as the Masonic Veterns......would there be a record of his death with one of these organizations? I have not been able to find out when he died....the last I find him is in the 1920 census in Brooklyn.
Finding ancestor in which central NY Masonic Lodge?

I am tracing Jacob S. Hays who died in 1856 in Herkimer, Herkimer Co. I am trying to find his place of birth, but do not know which lodge he was in so cannot request search by Chancellor Robert Livingston Masonic Library. His obit says he was a Masonic member and that at his funeral, there were members from Mohawk, Little Falls, and Ilion Masonic Lodges. The obit did not say which lodge Jacob S. Hays was a member of. He would not be a member of Herkimer Lodge No. 423 because it did not exist until 1857. Any way to find out which lodge he was in?
Thanks.
Jon

Re: Scotland Masonic Lodges

You may find this of interest, as I believe it may be some information,to a certain degree, of your grandfather. I just came back from an antique auction after purchasing the most elegant brass wall sconce from Arbroath Scotland with the makers mark C.Gray. After having done some research on line, I truely believe your grandfather was the manufacturer of this piece. It is actually a gimbaled brass ships chandelier stamped C.Gray 1882 Arbroath Scotland. As your grandfather was born there in 1857,the probability of this particular piece being his is extremely high. ASk your father what his profession was because this seems too much to be coincidental. If it is his work, you should be proud, as I am an avid collector of nautical antiques and this particular piece is one of the highlights of my collection.

Best regards,
Timothy Dow

Just came across your posting of last year. You've probably solved the issue by now, if not, read on.
Most masonic jurisdictions announce the forthcoming admission of a new member with his full name, address, date of birth and sometimes nationality and profession so that his admission can be balloted for. This will be recorded in the archives of the Lodge; and since Lodges usually have to pay annual dues to a Grand Lodge (the overall governing body) for each of their members, the Grand Lodge concerned will have probably recorded name and address, date of admission and year of leaving. If you know the name of the Lodge try phoning the Secretary, or try contacting the Grand Lodge (the Grand Lodge of New Jersey has its own website).

Just come across your post whilst idly browsing, so you may have found answers meanwhile. You don't say where they lived (i.e. where their Lodges might have been situated). If you have the addresses you might ask the Lodge Secretaries if they can help; or else try contacting the Grand Lodge under whose jurisdiction the Lodges come - most will have a website with contact details. Some (e.g. the United Grand Lodge of England) have a department where they will do a search for you at little or no cost.

The site you're looking for is Arkansas Research, Inc. www.arkansasresearch.com/index.htm On the home page go to the link State-wide Reference books. On the page it takes you to, there's a link for Masonic Records. You can view the indexes to the various volumes to locate for sure which one your ancestor is in. There is then a button to "Add to Cart". The book with complete abstracts from Masonic Records from the Grand Lodge of Arkansas can then be purchased. The cost is $39 plus shipping. You could check other book stores such as Amazon, remotely possible you'll find it for sale elsewhere. Your local genealogy library might be able to obtain it on loan for you. Good luck & Happy Hunting!

Dave,

Your assumption on the date is correct: 1897.
A.L. stands for "anno lucis" or "in the year of light." You add 4000 to year A.D. to get the A.L. date (or subtract 4000 from the A.L. date to get the A.D. one). A.D. of course is the abbreviation for the Latin "anno domini" or "in the year of our Lord."

PT.

I have 3 of these pins that were my father's. He was a Prudential Insurance agent for over 35 years. I too thought these might be Masonic as he was also a Mason but I discovered some certificates to go with the pins. I have a gold, silver and bronze. The POG stands for Prudential Old Guard.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's any hard and fast rule that would answer that easily. If he was initiated into a lodge in the old country, he may or may not have transfered his membership after emigrating. I can tell you from current practice that if a Mason moves to another town or state, he might transfer to a new lodge or might take on plural membership or might simply stay on the rolls of his original lodge (the first two are more likely true of younger men who move for professional or personal reasons, the last one is especially true of older men who move south after retiring). Sentimental reasons alone might even be enough for one to maintain membership in his mother lodge.

Now, under modern practice a man who doesn't pay dues to his lodge for a given period (usually one or two years) risks being suspended from good Masonic standing, which might have been likely if he was seven thousand miles away from contact with his lodge, but I don't know enough about 19th Century European Masonic practice to know what his status might have been.

Masonry is fundamentally a fraternal organization, the tenets of which may be contemplated independently but ultimately requires some association with a lodge and other Masons. At that, Masons have historically been pretty committed to meeting together in remote parts, so he might well have had some Masonic activity over here.
Thanks, that will give me a place to start. This ancestor immigrated in 1880 and I think he was a mason before coming to the US. Will that make a difference? Also he lived in relatively remote, frontier areas, places I suspect did not have a local lodge. What did practicing masons do in that situation? (Forget the ignorance of the question.) If there is no local lodge where he could continue to be a practicing mason, would he have retained membership in a previous lodge?

Generally, lodge secretaries keep minutes of their meetings, including the dates that new members were initiated, but if you don't have the lodge name, that won't help. However, if you know the general area where he might have been a member (specifically the state or province in America, Canada, Mexico or Australia; or the country just about anywhere else) you can probably figure out the Grand Lodge under whose jurisdiction his lodge would have been, and then you might be able to find some information from Grand Lodge records. Being myself a member of a lodge in Pennsylvania, I can tell you for a fact that the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania processes genealogical requests on members' masonic affiliations at http://www.pagrandlodge.org/genealogy/index.html. I don't know about other GLs' operations, but it wouldn't surprise me if others did the same. Google "Grand Lodge of (state/country)" to start.
I have an ancestor who is was a mason. I have birth date, death date, place of death and burial, etc., but no info on what lodge he might have been a member of. He has a masonic tomb stone but because he lived on the frontier and not in a city I'm guessing he lacked opportunity to join a lodge after he immigrated to the new world. Anyway it was obviously one of the Snow brothers. Research tells me it is most likely Herman. He was the only Snow still in Chicago in 1870 and the subject of the photo appears to be the right age.
