from "meet the pilgrim fathers" by elizabeth payne: the pilgrims huddled together on the covered deck. one day john howland could stand it no more. he said he had to have some fresh air. john climbed up to the open deck. a great wave rolled the ship to one side. john could not hold on. he fell into the sea. a rope was hanging over the side of the ship. john grabbed it. he hung on. the sailors pulled him back on board. the separatists gave thanks that john's life had been spared.... John Howland born 1593, died 3/5/1675 at plymouth mass. married elizabeth tilley and had 10 children, on and on to me and you, distant brother.
