I am a decendant of Rueben Cooke Jr. m. Elizabeth Landers.
I am currently trying to verify my Mayflower line through Rueben Cooke who married Bethia Rich. The Mayflower connection is from William and Mary Brewster, also Joseph Rogers. I see that I can now include Francis Cooke. If anyone has information that connects Rueben Cooke and Francis Cooke, I would love that. Also I need to verify the connection from Rueben Cooke Jr. on down if anyone can help me there. Plz feel free to e-mail me- lynnsnewlife@msn.com
Thanks much!

Lynn

Can anyone link the surnames Whitehouse, Little, or Sweet to the Mayflower? It is been said for 210 years my husband's family are descendants of the Mayflower. I can't get past James Little Whitehouse b. 1794 NH. Is it possible
Wm. White or one of his descendants could of changed the name White to Whitehouse? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Cherie

War with 5 Grandfathers:

Margaret Winslow (1589-1665) sister of Edward Winslow

Margaret Winslow m: Robert Hicks (1583-1647)

Son of Robert Hicks and Margaret Winslow:

John Hicks (1605-1672) w: Florence Fordham

And so on.

I don't know of any Alden connection. Please let me know if there is one.

Thanks Joan

Hello,

Ancestry.com does show a Mayflower connection for my Grandmother (Greats' implied). She is Margaret Winslow sister of Edward Winslow. She did not come on the Mayflower. She came in 1623 on the Anne, supposedly. So my connection would be to my UNCLE Ed Winslow.

My Question??? Does your relative have to be a Grandfather or Grandmother, in other words a Direct Lineal Line for exceptance in the Mayflower Society? Or can it be, in my example an Uncle?

Thanks

Joan

Yep, that's the form letter alright. Haha.

I've gotten THREE such rejections from all different info I've found on other people's trees on Ancestry. However, 4th time must be the charm, because I finally succeeded with a John Alden connection, but only down 8 generations, I have to provide vital records to match up to their last link in that chain...and it was only because someone else had already done that work. For $10 I was given the family tree list of that person, with notes as to which vital records prove each step. I now have to submit this paperwork to my local state branch, with my supplemental vital records, and will be given the golden ticket, I guess.

Scott

Re: Rejection of Chilton Lineage

I too was rejected from the society. My link was through a son of Isabella Chilton and Roger Chandler who had a son Roger who married Mary Simonds. They claim there is no proof of a son Roger, Jr. although it is quite common to see the name in other trees. After some research, it is still questionable and not a final no as to whether Roger Chandler, Jr was indeed the son of Isabella Chilton. Perhaps, I will never know. Anyone with this lineage should do a DNA test! I just find it quite interesting that they only have one source to base their rejection. This is the email I received from the Mayflower Society:

"We are delighted to learn of your interest in the Mayflower Society. We have received your Preliminary Review Form and have attempted to determine the best approved lineage paper that we might have which follows your stated lineage from Mayflower passenger James Chilton. Upon consulting our Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Vol 15: James Chilton book, we find that there is no Roger included among the children attributed to Isabella Chilton and Roger Chandler. Our lineage files are consistent with this and no one has ever applied for membership in the Mayflower Society through a Roger Chandler Jr.

It is certainly not the most enjoyable part of the lineage reviews to have to inform people that they have proposed a Mayflower lineage that is not known to be correct, but we can only report what the research has shown to be true. If you feel you have discovered evidence, in primary records such as vital records, wills, probate records, deeds, town records, church records etc, that clearly proves that Isabella Chilton had a son Roger Chandler, please contact the Mayflower Society in the state of your choice and ask them to review your research.

Follow-up on this assessment of your proposed lineage cannot be approached here at Plymouth due to the large response we are receiving for the online lineage reviews. Therefore, contacting the state through which one would be considering membership would be the potential applicant’s best next step. PLEASE DO NOT SEND DOCUMENTATION DIRECTLY TO PLYMOUTH.

I tried establishing a connection to Chilton of the Mayflower, by using family trees found on Ancestry.com. In particular, I linked to Sarah Chandler through a known ancestor, Moses Simmons. Here is what The Mayflower Society wrote me:

"Upon consulting our Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, Vol 15: James Chilton -- Richard More book, we find that there is no mention that Sarah Chandler married a Moses Simmons."

Just an FYI for anyone on Ancestry.com, relying on this link.
Did you ever get an answer to this? I searched for this couple and found your post.

The Cooke line mixes into the King line which mixes into the Hart line ( I have this rather convoluted diagram which I should re-do), so we're kin ;) I'd love to find out more.

Washburn/married Abigail Vaughn; descended from Thomas Washburn/married Elizabeth ?; descended from Ebenezer Washburn, Jr/married Mary ?; descended from Ebenezer Washburn/married Patience Miles; descended from Joseph Washburn/married Hannah Latham; descended from John Washburn/married Eperience Cooke Mitchell;

I have had a bit of trouble with some research in the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia period when one Washburn was up there....still researching. If anyone has helpful information, glad to reciprocate with what I have.

I have a Mrs. patric Smith listed as daughter of George and Nancy both of who died in 1910. If this is who you are loooking for I have some information but would love to share what you have. I'm trying to find out where his parents are buried. you can email me at lucileleary@verizon.net.

I first would like to applaud all of you for your research
on your ancestry.

Word has it I am a Mayflower descendant and finally have some time on my hands to verify this. Unfortunately, all I have to work with is my grandfather due to a family dispute upon his untimely death:

Charles Arthur Wood of NYC.
b. abt 1897
d. 10/26/1928 in NYC.

Sister's name was possibly Margaret Wood.

This all all I know at the moment. There is nothing listed on him at Familysearch.org.

Does this name match with any Wood in your descendant charts?

Any information on how to start this endeavor from any of you Pros would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you kindly in advance.

Hi, I'm just now reading this thread 5 years later.

I'm also a descendant of Mary Hopkins and Deacon Edward Church...and I've also noticed that many trees list Mary as a last daughter of Stephen Hopkins. While all historical sites I've visited list the last child of Stephen to be Ruth, born in 1630...and the only mention of a "Mary" is his first wife that died in England before the Mayflower voyage.

Further, all of his children born in the U.S. were born in Plymouth.

Yet our Mary was born in Hetfield, in 1637...if we are to believe the tree entries on this website. If Mary is a true daughter of Stephen, then (a) Elizabeth would have been 42, and a year and a half away from death, (b) Elizabeth and Stephen and family moved an hour and a half west to Hetfield to have mary, or (c) Stephen had an affair, and Mary is an illegitimacy.

While none of the three theories above are that far fetched, given the time, we have to wonder if Mary's maiden name is truly Hopkins, and she was that early of a settler, how come NO other Hopkins people appear on the passenger lists of that time period? I've checked and found nothing. You can look too:

http://www.packrat-pro.com/ships/shipnamesH.htm

So, we're left with really only two theories: Either Mary is an illegitimate and undocumented daughter of Stephen OR one of his children...or some overzealous genealogist had a case of "wishful thinking".

Please email any comments you have to me at lobsterjesus@yahoo.com.

Thanks, Scott

My application to The Mayflower Society, on the basis of my claim to Stephen through my ancestor, Mary, has been officially REJECTED.

They state that there is no record whatsoever of there being a daughter by the name of Mary attributed to Mayflower Stephen Hopkins.

Anyone who has a Mary as a daughter to Stephen in their tree should really remove it, as MANY people are apparently assuming Mayflower lineage based on Mary...who is not her daughter.

(still searching for my Mayflower roots...have fun everyone!)

Scott (lobsterjesus@yahoo.com)

Well, the Mayflower Society only rejected my application based on Mary being a daughter of Stephen Hopkins.

Further research has shown that of all Stephen's kids, the only ones that would (a) be alive and of age to conceive Mary for a birth in 1637, and (b) was a male, keeping Mary Hopkins' name, would be either of Stephen's sons: Giles or Caleb.

I've seen a tree on Ancestry that shows a Mary being born to Caleb, but the years are slightly off. No documentation backs it up, however.

I am glad that someone else is interested in the Cooks from Lebanon. I was recently in Salt Lake and looked at the vital records from Lebanon. This is where I found the marriage date for Huldah Cook to William Rogers. I also found a marriage date for Fredrick Cook to Abigail Packard 19 June 1788 in Lebanon. Harry W Cook married Lucy Ann Abott on 7 Feb 1827. I have ordered the film so I can research it again. There was a Jessie Cook and his family that was recorded in the records. My Huldah doesn't seem to fit in with him. I made a copy of a book about Jessie and his family. I can look anything up that might help anyone. There are some Cooks in Norwich, Vermont. There were 3 brothers that came from Lancaster, Mass, their parents were Jonathan and Lydia Aldrich Cook. Their names were Samuel, Francis and Lyman. I have researched all the land records in Lebanon and Norwich to try and find any connections to my Huldah. I have had no luck yet. I only discovered Huldah's last name in March but have been looking for her for 10 years. I made two trips back to New Hampshire trying to find out about this family. My next step is to contact the Historical Society in Lebanon and see if they can help. I will be glad to share any information that I can find.

She lived and raised her family in Norwich,Vermont across the river. I have not been able to find her parents. I think she might be related to these Cooks. She could be a sister. She was born about 1774 and died in 1844 in Norwich. I need help with this and would like any information on these Cooks. Brenda

Hi,

I also connect to John Buzzell and Sarah Wibird through their son John Buzzell who married Phebe Evans....looks like my John and your Joseph married sisters.... my Phebe and your Sarah Evans.

This seems even more likely given that your Joseph and Sarah named a son Robert Evans Buzzell b.1757 ~ info I have found says that the father of my Phebe Evans was Robert Evans.

Would be good to share further info regarding these families,

Janice

I am a descendant of #9, Jacob Belfry and Susan Rose via their daughter Hester who married George Washington Wright and lived in Michigan.

I am being asked by The Mayflower Society to provide more documentation from Gen #7.
