I researching the Knutsen and Finney families that lived
in the Scotch Ridge area of Belmont county Ohio. My grand father was Andrew Knutsen h/o Lucia Rebecca Finney Knutsen. Both are burried in the cemetery at Scotch Ridge. Andrew came from Wheeling prior to living in the S.R. area. I know that Lucia is a decendant to Robert Finney b. 1795 and is also burried at S.R. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Byron Knutsen
Porter, James at Martin's Ferry Inn or tavern

James PORTER and his family had an "Inn or Tavern" at Martin's Perry on "the old Pike Road" between the years of 1850 and 1853. Is there any resource or information where I could find out more about this venture? Research that I have done notes that there were many "Pike" roads, however I believe it would have been the "Martin's Ferry & Colerain Pike"

James' wife was Katrine (or Catherine) REED, daughter of Phillip Reed.

Any assistance with this endeavor would be appreciated.

Looking for 1984,1985.1986,1987,& 1988 Martins Ferry High School yearbooks. I used to have the whole collection but a family member threw them out, so I'm now looking to replace them. I tried the high school, but they no longer have them years. I'm willing to pay what was paid for them when they were sold. Maybe a little more. I'm also looking for Old M.F. Football Programs from the same years!

I'm researching any information on George and Helen Oancea, who immigrated to Martins Ferry around the turn of the century. They were supposedly from the Transylvania region of what is now Romania. Also interested in any information on Romanian immigrants to the Martins Ferry area.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what churches were near Lincoln in the late 1800's. My husbands family lived on that street. They were Ross Porter, John A. Porter, Thomas Brooks, William Brooks, Jefferson Porter & Oliver Porter. Some lived on this street. And others lived near that street.
Thanks for any help in advance.
B.
DeHass house

Does anyone know where Dr. Frank DeHass is buried? He lived in Martins Ferry at the end of his life. There is a DeHass St. in MF. I believe the red brick house there may have been his home, called Avondale. Are there pictures or portraits of his home from his time? Can anyone confirm that the house there was his? Any efforts being made to give it historical status?

I grew up on North Zane Hwy, across the alley from that house and have been curious about it all my life.

I read Annie Tanks' article on Rev. DeHass. Given his notability as an author and a diplomat, I am surprised no action has been taken in the community about him, especially considering his book written in the 1800's is still being reprinted and used in colleges today!

Indian kidnapping of Brown children

Does any one know or heard of two of Able and Lydia (Stuckey) Brown,s sons being kidnapped by the Indians between 1798 and 1805. The story I heard says they were taken to the Indians village some 135 miles West of Powhatan Point, Belmont co., Oh. Then some time later both boys escaped and found their way back to Powhatan Point. Although one of the two could never sleep in a bed after that.
This was handed down throught the family of Abel's son Isaac.
I have not found any proof of this. And the only item relating to Indian raids that late in the 1700's was during the Battle of Captina Creek which ended about 1796 or so.
Clark's Addition

To Whom It May Concern,

I'm interested in any information or picture of Main, First, Center Streets in Martins Ferry. We are again putting together a Clark's Addition reuion this year. The Reunion is Saturday August 23 rd. at Floto Field in Martins Ferry, Ohio. This is my first year in helping in the benefit. My reason for joining the benefit is what the money will be used for. The money raised will be donated (but monitored to be sure that the money raised is used for updates) to the Recreation and
Park's. We want to help make the thing that we have in Martins Ferry of use. Updating of the Recreation Center will surely bring money to the Recreation Center and help it make money of it's own so that it can update and make the necessary fixes that it needs to be that place people went to to exercise and have social events. I want to use that building and so should the people of Martins Ferry. We have something let's use it. It needs updating and the benefit will help in making those updates.

The reason for the picture's is to be able to put a picture of Clark's Addition on the flyer's so that people can see what the benefit is for. If anyone would be interested in helping please call me or e-mail me at Phone 740-635-1989
Email Waidecraft@comcast.net

Thanks Melissa Waide

Looking for information on my maternal grandfather. His name was Alfred Leasure. Alfred's mother was a Workman. He married Zelda Laisure. I know that they lived in the Bellaire Ohio area, and I remember hearing them talk about Martin's Ferry. I believe that they lived there when they were married. I know that my mother, Judith, was born in Bellaire in 1939. And her brother Paul a few years later. Sometime after that, they moved to Indiana. I know that Zelda's sister Emma, lived in Bellaire also, and was married to Johnny Meager. Also Zelda's brother, Clyde lived there with his wife, Emily. Emma was very active in the local Red Cross. Any thing on any of these people would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Anne

Alice Veronica Jennings - death or marriage lookup

I am looking for a marriage or death record/lookup for Alice Veronica Jennings. She was born about 11-=18-=1874 and she appears single (Miss) per her father's obit as of 1908. She was born in Tionesta, PA Warren County. I am not sure how she came to live in Martins Ferry, OH, but that is her address per family obits, etc.
This woman is rather important to me because my grandmother is named after her.....
From my records, she died May 11, 1969 and I assume there in Martins Ferry, OH. She was definitely catholic so perhaps the St. Marys church there has records of her?
I hope someone can help me!
Ginny

I have some information on Job Kenyon Hadsell and the family he raised. But would enjoy sharing and recieving more. He was a river man from Martins Ferry. He traveled as far as New Orleans, meeting a Southern Belle, Mary Young Cook, in Natchez MS. He had Felix, Hamilton, Joseph, and Minerva Zane. Felix is buried in Martin's Ferry and Hamilton in St. Clairsville. I had thought Zane in Minerva's name was a misprint until I read about the Zane family on the Martin's Ferry Historical Page.

Johnson Family

Hello,
I have been trying to find my Johnson line for over a year and I am not having much luck. So I must call on you good people out there for help.
My GG-Grandparents were William F. and Rebecca Jane Thompson Johnson. William and Rebecca were married in Harrison County 3 Sept. 1894.

They are listed in the 1900 Belmont County Union Twp Census as follows:::
Johnson, William age 45
wife, Rebecca age 30
daughter, Fannie B. age 15

Fannie married Chester Elerick in 1901 in Belmont County.

I have been searching and searching for anything on this family, but I just can't seem to come up with anything. I do have information on the Elerick side, but the Johnson side is a depressing story.

I found in the 1930 Belmont County, Bridgeport Census this:

William F. Johnson age 75
Son, Frank E. age 45
Nephew, Otto age 33

This would be the correct age for the William F. Johnson I am looking for, but I can't seem to find anything on the Frank and Otto to make a connection with my William and the William listed.

If there is anyone one out there that might be able to help I would be so greatful to you.

Thank you for your time,
Roxann Hoover
rjhoover4@hotmail.com
I am curious about these two organizations -- my gg grandfather, William Henry Moore, Civil War vet, belonged to both. He died in Martin's Ferry on 30 May, 1929.(Born there 29 March 1839). He lived in Martin's Ferry, as did my family (Coss and Moore) for many many years. Any information about the organizations would be interesting -- as would be anything further about the lines for both gg gradfathers: Harrison Coss (b. 15 March, 1832, d. 6 Nov. 1900; also a Civil War vet) and the above WH Moore. Thank you. Lyn

Gaylord - nearest cemetery

My ggrandfather Daniel JOHNSON was, reportedly, with his son James and dtr-in-law, Esmarilda DRUGAN's family near Gaylord Overpass when he died in the late 1800's or early 1900's. From oral tradition there was snow "as deep as a horse's stomach" therefore he was buried in the nearest cemetery. I've have been unable to find anything of his death, the very deep snow or what cemetery is/was nearest to Gaylord. On an old map I once saw a cemetery near the RR tracks, but I am unable to locate it now. Can anyone help me find any of these puzzle pieces?

Thanks, Lois Johnson Gibboney

If any one at all can help me I would be forever grateful. I am trying to find my Father in-laws family tree, as a surprize! I have the living family and Michael Colvin's mothers side almost dating back to the 1700's. I am really in need of any help or information that any one can provide me with on the Colvin family. I am currently stuck at Clarence S. Colvin who married Bessie Winland and Louis E. Colvin. The Colvin family doesn't know a lot about their family. I do know that the family is orginally from Germany/Ireland. I know that they mainly lived in the Ohio, West Virginia area. If anyone has any information no matter how big or small I would be forever thankful.

James Wells, Cadwallader Wells, Alexander Wells, Henry Wells; 1853-1873

I am very interested in finding any information on the Wells family as listed in the reference below:

From theCounty and Family Histories: OH, 1780-1970
Belmont, Jefferson Counties, Chapter XXI, Page 294

In 1853 James and Cadwallader Wells commenced the manufacture of agriculture implements, and finding some dificulty in procuring the necessary castings, or thinking that the possesion of a foundry gave their rivals an advantage over them, established a second foundry in the village. In 1857 Henry Wells succeeded them. He took in a partner, after carrying on the business five years, his brother Alexander, and together they embarked in the manufacture of stoves and castings of all kinds, under the title of the Buckeye foundry. The increase of trade compelled them to extend their facilities, and from a room 30x40, in which they had done their castings, they enlarged it to 60x120 feet, where they continued doing an extensive business until 1873, when Spence, Baggs & Co. became their successors, and who are at present carrying on a sucessful trade.

I am trying to find information on my great grandmother, her maiden name was Ida May Morton. She and her husband, Clyde Leasure lived in Harrison County, but I believe that she may have lived in Martin's Ferry when she was quite young. She was born in approx. 1878 give or take a year or two. I also have found some places where she was listed as Mary... but I am fairly certain that her actual name was Ida May. Thank you for anything at all!
Anne
