I would be very interested in documented sources for the Kendall-Wetzel expedition. Jeremiah Kendall is my 5G grandfather and I've read about his alleged exploits but have seen very little hard documentation for most of them.

Thanks,
Ray

They had 4 children. If you would like more information, please e-mail me at alladrm@hotmail.com.
Sorry about that. I meant the email to go to Pat Paxson. We exchanged emails a while back and found no connection as far back as 1700. I do have a little info on Thomas Downes b. cir 1674 and lived in Maryland 1699 who married Susanah Gary, married October 25, 1699. Have an indenture dated 1699 I can send.

I have never found any connection however to my line. Good hearing from you.

Jim Downs

Thanks for the invitation. Do not know if we are connected or not. My ancestor, Thomas Downs, was born in about 1706 in northeastern Maryland. He married around 1730 in Baltimore then moved to Pittsburg area in 1766. His children moved to Kentucky just after the Rev. War in 1780. Do you know of any possible brothers of you William Downs born about the same time in a nearby area?

Ray Downs

All of my Dad's family, my Aunts, Gr. Aunts, etc..., all said there were 14 children, 7 boys, 7 girls. Yes a few died early maybe right after birth, even my Dad was not expected to live. I have a piece of paper here (somewhere?) from my Aunt, who wrote on it most of the names of the children she could remember, along with the surnames of Crete, and Abel. She died a few years back at the age of 100. This spelling is different than that of Creedy on death certificates. Who knows, they wrote down back then how ever it sounded. Even my Grandmother Marie Reinhart Fayard, they wrote down Mary on some papers. It was pronounced Mary because it was French, but spelled Marie. So there is proof they wrote how it sounded back then. That part of my family do not seem to share all of the stuff they have, which they seem to have most everyting. But I will succeed in my research one way or another.

I'm not so sure about the 14 children. On the 1900 census Minnie says she gave birth to 12 children and only 8 were still living at the time of the 1900 census (KY).
As for Minnie's last name I'm still keeping my fingers crossed: Kretz, Kritie, Cridie, Abel. A real mystery!

The names are used over and over again, naming them after fathers, grandfathers, siters, mothers, etc......... etc.... . It can drive you nuts trying to sort out which one is which.
Some of the names I know of John and Minnie's children are George, Henry , Fred, Edward, John, Martin, and 2 more boys. There were 7 girls also Minnie, Marie, Laura, Emma, Lulu. Lola, can't rember any more at the moment. 7 boys and 7 girls.

All I know is that John and Minnie lived in Bromley next to the Lagoon. I have asked Christy where she got Fred and Mary from, because our last research did not include them.
As far as John and Minnie, those names up here were a dime a dozen as a couple. There is even a large Reinhart area in Sping Grove Cemetery with a John and Minnie. They did have 14 children I know for a fact, and I know that Minnie had at least 6 younger sisters herself. My Grandmother Marie, their daughter, was a 7th daughter of a 7th daughter, therefore making Minnie a 7th.
There is just way too many of them.
I made calls to some in Ky. over by the Lagoon a couple of years ago, they acted like they had no idea who anyone was. I got the feeling they thought I was after something, who knows, all I want is info., copies of papers and photos, I'd pay for the copies I even told him. He still acted dumb. I also know one of them had to have roots in this country from the 1700's, for my Grandmother was a DAR, which means your are a direct descent from a Revolutionary war soldier. But I am at a standstill with the research myself.

This story has been published countless times:

JEREMIAH KENDALL, born Feb.6, 1758 died Jan.22, 1843 near Uniontown, Pa.
youngest son of William and Jamima Kirk Kendall: a Revolutionary Soldier, an
officer in 1794, under Mad Anthony Wayne, during the Indian wars of the
North West, and was at the Treaty of Greenville, was in the War of 1812 from
Pa., and was badly wounded nine times in these wars. He was born in
Farquier County, Va. where he married Rhoda McIntyre in 1778, daughter of
Alexander McIntyre. Lived here until the close of the Revolutionary War,
when he moved to Fayette County, Pa. with his wife and two children &
located on his farm on the "Old National Road" between Brownsville &
Uniontown. Just as soon as he had his family comfortable located, he
decided to visit his brother in Meade County, Ky. and other relatives in New
Orleans. SAMUEL LEWIS, LEWIS WETZEL, and himself had been comrades
together in the Indian Wars. They built a "Flat Boat" at Wheeling, W. Va.
and floated down "Old Man River" to New Orleans, visiting relatives on the
way. They were attacked by a large force of Indians in canoes below
Louisville, Ky. Things looked pretty bad for a time, but when Samuel Lewis
took the oars, and Lewis Wetzel, and Jeremiah Kendall took the
"blunderbusses" loaded with 36 rifle balls, the tide of battle soon turned
and some of the Indians succeeded in getting back to tall timber, never to
show themselves again to this bunch. Lewis Wetzel came back as far as
Natches, Miss. where he died in 1808, and was buried there, and was
forgotten. Dr. Albert W. Browser of Chicago made a 20 year search before
finding his grave, and disinternment was made in March 1942, by Dr. Browser
who found the famous Indian fighter, and scout's rifle buried with him. The
remains have been brought to Wheeling and placed in a receiving vault.
Later a military service will be held, and a reburial will be made in the
McCreary cemetery, near the old Wetzel homestead, in Marshall county, where
his mother and several of his brothers are buried. His father was killed by
the Indians, opposite the town Powhatan, and buried at the mouth of Grave
Yard run.

(((Lynette (Salsbury) Greenwald, 5th Great Granddaughter of Jeremiah Kendall LSals420@aol.com)))

Not many people do research on that sort of travel.

I am going to Pittsburgh the 1st of August and will try to find some info on it. I'll keep everyone up to date. I think another good place to try will be Cincinnati.

Angelina's oldest sister was Rosina (aka Roseanne), born c 1846, who married william wilson. Their daughter Louisa (c 1882)married John Owen, and their daughter Ellen was my Grandmother (1923) who sadly passed away in December. I will be more exact when I have re-located my papers (we moved a while back and they are one of the things still packed).

Luigi's children were Joseph Samuel (1848), Rosina (1846), Angelina Annita (1861), Maria Teresa (1852), Mary Elizabeth (1856), Cecira Letia (1858), Margaret Anne (1850), Charles Louis (1865 - died as infant) - I have just looked these up on the FreeBMD site (but you have to try different spellings - these show up under Monestere, monastere and monasteri)

Luigi spent a lot of time as a hawker , probably travelling a lot, and he dies in 1881 in a small village near Bishop Auckland.

Joseph Samuel moved to Bradford and his mother seems to have spent her last years with him and his wife as she dies in 1881 in Bradford. His oldest sons Joseph Samuel and Arthur emigrated to Ohio, and I think a sister also went with them. I found Arthur on the Ellis Island site.

I knew Luigi's faher's name as I have a copy of his marriage certificate, but I knew nothing else about his family other than he was born in Milan according to the census. Somewhere I have a picture of a Monasteri Barometer sent to me by a relative in Vancouver. I think I got confused in my last message as I believe that the Vancouver Link (Lois Barclay) is also from Angelina's line. Again once I have all my papers to hand, I will have all the info she sent me too.

When I find my papers I will let you know, and we can compare notes properly.

Angelina is definitely from our family - I knew we had a Lever connection but had not got as far as trying to trace it.

I am in East Sussex, but originally from the North East. I would be very interested in anything you have. I'll see if I can find my papers so I can send you what I have.

Luigi/Louis was the barometer maker, who moved to england in the early 1800's and died in 1881. There are a few different spellings of the surname in different records.

This is really interesting. I live in Yorkshire, England. I was born in Bradford. Francis Lever was my father and his grandmother was a Monasteri (I think it is spelled with an 'i' at the end). They were barometer makers whom I understand came to England from Italy in the 1880s. My father died in February this year, aged 82, but he left me his attempts at tracing his family tree. If anyone is interested, I will let you have the information he learned. I think, without looking at his notes, that Angelina Monasteri was the name of his grandmother. She may have married a person called Mullan. Anyway, I can find out more.

Hi, thank you for responding. Hey - you must be a cousin of mine!

I have now looked at my dad's records and the spelling is Monastere with an 'e', so I was wrong about that.
I will give you the info my dad collected, starting with him and his sister. They were Mary Lever, born 29.8.1919, and Francis Lever, born 3.7.1926. Their parents were William Lever and Mary Agnes Mullan who married in 1918. William Lever's parents were George Lever and Angelina Monastere. Angelina's parents were Luigi Monastere (born in Milan circa 1816/17) and Mary Ann Buck. Luigi Monastere's parents were Joseph Monastere and Rosina (don't know her surname).

My father, Francis, married Charlotte Shrimpton in 1949 and they had three children, Elizabeth (10.2.52), Rosemary (me) (15.8.58) and Dominica (27.6.61) And so it goes on.

My father had done quite a lot of work on his family tree and had looked into other branches of the family but does not appear to have got further back than Joseph and Rosina Monastere. If you want any further info, I will happily supply it as I have now become intrigued in his findings and will start to read them fully. He died in February after a very long illness and it is really good for me to be able to read his writings now.

Where do you fit in with the Monastere family? Angelina was obviously my great grandmother (not that I ever knew her). I have not researched yet when she died but I suspect the date will be in my dad's records.

Good to hear from you

I'm sorry. I was never informed of your reply to my post. My Mary was from Indiana as far as I know. However, I now know her husbands name was James Clark, not John.

Any connection is helpful. This couple is my brick wall and has been for decades!

Thanks,
Kris Mays

I don't know how much you have already. His WWII Draft Registration gives
his birthdates as May 18, 1887. He says he was born in Amesville, Ohio.
The nearest relative who will always know where he is:
Mrs. Amy Carpenter.
I found this on ancestry. This man is not connected to me, to my
knowledge.
This message was gatewayed to the Ohio River board but cannot be answered from that destination.

In 1810, Peter Troutman was listed in the Census of Frederick Co, MD as "P. Troutman".
See Trautmann/Troutman Early Records in America for census details.
In Peter's household, there were two males 26-45 years old, as well as one female 26-45.
One of the males was certainly Peter himself, and the female was Christina, but I have no idea who the other male was.
By the time of the 1820 Census, Peter had moved just across the Potomac River to Loudoun Co, VA. See Trautmann/Troutman Early Records in America for census details.
The census shows 5 children, 1 boy and 4 girls, under 10 years old in this household.
I believe these are Peter's children.
The boy was Michael Troutman, who was born about 1810 by his age of 40 in the 1850 Census.
One of the daughters was definitely Susan Rebecca Troutman.

According to records of New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lovettsville, Loudoun, Virginia,
Susan Rebecca Troutman
(daughter of Peter and Christina Troutman) was 19 July 1817 and baptized 7 Nov 1819.
This record can be found at the LDS site.
I think that Ann Catherine and Mary Ann were two other daughter in 1820.
I cannot find Peter Troutman in the 1830 Census,
but I believe he moved back to Frederick Co, MD. Peter's son Michael married Rebecca Haller in Frederick Co, MD in 1834.
Later that same year, Ann Catherine Troutman married Jonathan Kline. In 1835, David Shawen married Mary Ann Troutman, though that marriage record has been misread with David's surname as "Shavers".
In the 1840 Census, I cannot find Jonathan Cline, but I found
David Shawen in Frederick Co, MD:FC 1840 MD Frederrick, roll 106, p.179 - David Shawen - 2 M 0-4, 1 M 20-29, 1 F 0-4, 1 F 5-9. 1 F 15-19, 1 F 20-29.

I think Michael Troutman was in Fayette Co, PA in 1840, because the 1850 census shows he had a daughter born in Pennsylvania about 1844. See Trautmann/Troutman Early Records in America for census details.

In 1842, Susan Troutman married Shadrack Shawen,
who was probably the brother of David Shawen who had married her sister,
Mary.
In 1849, Ann R. Troutman, who may have been a daughter of Peter and Christina, married George W. Kephart. In the 1850 Census,
this Troutman family seems to be split between Frederick County, Maryland, and Montgomery County, Ohio.
For Michael Troutman, see Trautmann/Troutman Early Records in America. Michael was listed on page 294 of Harrison Township.

David Shawen and his wife Mary Ann Troutman were on page 292.
A few families before David Shawen, also on page 292, was George Gephart and his wife Rebecca.
Since this family was so close to David Shawen's family, and since both George and Rebecca Gephart were born in Maryland,
I believe George Gephart was the same as George W. Kephart who married Ann R. Troutman in 1849 in Frederick Co, MD, and that Ann R. Troutman's full name was Ann Rebecca Troutman.
Note that it was not that unusual for siblings to have similar names, since Ann Rebecca's name was similar to Susan Rebecca's name.
Note that in Michael Troutman's household, there was a 56 year old male named Christian Troutman.
I believe this was a mistake by the census taker. I think this was Christina Runner Troutman, widow of Peter Troutman.

She was actually 61.Jonathan Cline and wife Ann Catherine Troutman, and Shadrick Shawen and wife Susan Rebecca Troutman, were living in Frederick Co, MD in the 1850 Census.
FC 1850 OH Montgomery, Harrison, p.292 - George Gephart 26 M Carpenter MD, Rebecca 18 F MD, Eve 63 F MD, Elizabeth 30 F MD

FC 1850 OH Montgomery, Harrison, p.292 - David Shaun 40 M Laborer MD, Mary A 36 F VA, George W 14 M MD, Susan L 12 F MD, Edwin L 10 M MD, Emma F 6 F MD, Samuel F 4 M MD, Christena R 2 F MD

FC 1850 MD Frederick, roll 282, p.81 - Jonathan Cline 39 M Shoemaker MD, Ann C 34 F MD, Josiah T 13 M MD, Cornelia E 11 F MD, Warner W 10 M MD, John K 8 M MD, Ephraham 8 M MD, Alice Q 5 F MD, Francis M 3 M MD, Emma J 1 F MD

FC 1850 MD Frederick, Buckeystown District, p.209 - Shedrick Shawen 32 M Laborer MD, Susan 30 F MD, Cyrus C M MD, William H 11m M MD

I do not have access to all the census indexes for 1860 and 1870, so I lose track of some of Peter and Christina Troutman's children.
After 1850, I have no idea what became of George W. and Anne Rebecca Troutman Gephart/Kephart.
I cannot find Shadrick Shawen in 1860, but by 1870, he was living in Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH.
I found David Shawen in both 1860 and 1870.
I cannot find any trace of Michael Troutman's family in 1860 or 1870. I also cannot find any trace of the family of Jonathan and Ann Catherine Troutman Cline in 1860 or 1870. Note that in 1860, a "Christian" Troutman, female, age 61, was living with John and Rebecca Stokes.
Again, I think this was Christina Runner Troutman, widow of Peter, though she was actually 71 years old. A John Haller, born in Maryland, was next door.
I think John Haller may have been the brother of Rebecca Haller, Michael Troutman's wife. Rebecca, wife of John Stokes, was 25 and born in Maryland.
She may have been the Susan R(ebecca?) Troutman, age 11, living with Michael and Rebecca Haller Troutman in the 1850 Census.
If that was the case, then Christina Troutman was living with her granddaughter.
This is the last census in which I can find Christina, so she probably died before 1870.
FC 1860 OH Montgomery, Harrison, p.173 - David Shawn 50 M Farmer MD, Mary A F MD, Edwin L 20 M MD, Emma F 16 F MD, Rebecca 12 F MD

FC 1860 OH Montgomery, Harrison, p.209 - Christian Troutman 61 F MD (living with John and Rebecca Stokes, John Haller is next family)

FC 1870 OH Montgomery, Harrison, p.511 - David Shawen 60 M farm hand MD, Mary Ann 56 F MD

FC 1870 OH Montgomery, 9 Ward Dayton, p.392 - Shadrick Shawen 52 M drives cart MD, Susan 50 F MD, William 20 M MD (Cyrus Shawen is next family)

By 1880, Shadrick Shawen and David Shawen were both living in Harrison Twp, Montgomery Co, OH.
Ann Catherine Troutman Cline, widow of Jonathan Cline, was living in Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH. Rebecca (Haller) Troutman, widow of Michael Troutman, was living in Union Twp of Miami Co, OH, which is just north of Montgomery Co, OH.

Thanks for posting !

I am the person from Vancouver who bought a mercury wheel barometer made by my great-great-great grandfather, Luigi MONASTERI.

Luigi (b. 1822) married Mary Ann BUCK (b. 1823) and produced 9 children, the 4th being my gg-grandmother, Maria Teresa MONASTERI (b.1852) who married James (John) Sidgwick SMITH and produced 6 children, the first being my great grandmother, Angelina SMITH (b 1879).

Angelina SMITH married my great grandfather, George LOVE and emigrated to Canada around 1912. I believe that one other sibling, Joseph MONASTERE left England for America. I would imagine you have already collected the information from the UK censuses up to 1911, BDM records, etc.. It appears in one of the later censuses that Luigi MONASTERI is described as a lunatic living in an asylum - poisoned by mercury no doubt.

Reading from your Ancestry.com message and Carol Pearce's family tree - you descend from their 7th child, Angelina Annita MONASTERI, who married George LEVER in Bradford. It would appear that the last two MONASTERI children did not survive.

Do you have any old photos of the Monasteri's that you would be willing to share? I think I might be able to find a few snapshots of Angelina (Smith) LOVE - I don't believe I have ever seen any portrait studio-type photos of her or her family.

If Carole can't find her family tree, I will be happy to send you a copy with our Maria Teresa MONASTERI branch brought up-to-date to 2009. Just had a look, the barometer is engraved MONASTERE DARLINGTON .

Donna Love
