Locating property on the basis of a deed search

At the Anderson County courthouse, I have located property descriptions for members of the Turpin family (mid 1800's). My question is this: How does a person take a property description (noting natural markers that were probably only known in the 1800's) and find the location of that piece of property on a present-day map?

Can anyone tell me the location of the home of Martin Turpin and/or James Turpin in Anderson County in the early 1800's? Martin Turpin married Mary Elizabeth Russell in Knox County in 1805, but apparently Martin's family and the family of his son James lived in Anderson County by the 1840's. I am wondering if they might have lived at the site of Turpin Spring--located on Blockhouse Valley Road.

I recently looked at Vol. 9 1988 of the Pellissippian and found a transcription of Benjamin Waldens Bible. This was submitted by Jane Ayers of Lafollette,TN. Ms. Ayers states that the actual Bible is in the posession of Rosalie A. Keever of Knoxville,TN. Have not been able to locate either of these two sources.Benjamin is my 4ggrandfather and I would love to see or at least see pictures of this Bible. If any one has a clue of how I could possibly get in touch with either of these ladies, please contact me at knxorick@aol.com Thanks in advance.
Family History for Curtis Ralston Hill

I'm looking for family histories involving Curtis Ralston Hill, born around Knoxville Tennessee around 1900. I believe he is the great grandson of Marvel Hill (b. 4 Nov 1802 d. 29 Aug 1870), and the son of Jamaca Weaver (Hill) (b. 1 Oct 1880, d. 6 Nov 1904). I know the family was located in Knox Co. Tennessee, along Hill Road north of Knoxville. Curtis Ralston left Tennessee by the 1920's and moved to Detroit Michigan, where he had one son, John (Jack) David in 1928. Any help is appreciated.

I've hit a rock wall and find nothing beyound William who lived from c. 1820 to 1898. Was his name changed from the Germanic Ihreg or was the name Irecks? Anyone with an answer, let me know.
Hall Family

I am trying to find information about the Hall family connected to Joe and Leah Hall.

He lived in Anderson county all of his life, around Clinton. He was born in the 1880's and died in 1947. (Some census say 1883, some say 1887). His wife's name was Leah ( nee Walden). They had several children, William, Nettie, Clara Violet, Edith, Mary Ella, Carl, Ethel, and Burton. Several of these also lived in or around Clinton all of their lives. I understand he had a brother named or called David and a brother named or called Tom, and this Tom was married to a woman named Sarah. Also a sister named or called Peggie. Peggy had a daughter named Mary and a son named George, born approx. 1905 and 1907. Peggy's daughter Mary married Huston Graham, they had children George and Georgette, Edward, and Willie. I have been through the censuses at ancestry.com, and I find them with their respective families, however I cannot seem to locate the information I am seeking - who were Joe's parents? Who were Leah's parents?

You know the census I needed is the one that isn't there - the 1890.......

Joe was buried along the fence row of the cemetery there in Clinton, and now a shed has been built over the top of his grave and his infant son's grave (They were only marked with rocks). Leah died in Maryville in 1963. I am not sure where she was buried.

I believe they were married sometime between 1910 and 1916.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Laura

Hi,
I believe these are my husband's gg-grandparents. In the 1860 census, they had son, John P., age 4, and daughter, Mary E., age 1. They left TN and were in Cold Spring, MO, by the 1870 census. Apparently they were in Illinois on the way there, because children Samuel B. (b ~ 1862), Ruth E. (b ` 1864) and James R. (b ~ 1866) were all b. Illinois.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to finding William's or Elizabeth's siblings and parents?

Finally, where, exactly, is Coxes store?

Many thanks,
Barbara

Parentage of William Thomas Wilson b. 12-22-1844

Through research of the Civil War Pension Files of William Thomas Wilson, I have partially uncovered one of our familys mysteries. Thomas Wilson was raised by his grandfather William Wilson near Beech Fork. He was born there 12-22-1844. About 1860 they removed to within 10 miles of Jacksboro. Further research places William, wife Margaret, Peggy Ann age15 (said to be the child of Henry Wilson, 1st wife of Thomas Marlow Jr.), and Thomas age 7 in Anderson County. Within the file is an affadavit from Thomas Marlow Jr. b. 1836. His statement is that Thomas Wilson is the child of his sister. I have found that there were two older sisters of Thomas Marlow that fit. Elizabeth born before 1827, who married Thomas Phillips on 4-28-1852 and Jean "Jennie" b. 6-10-1827, who married Clark Patterson, 9-23-1949. If anyone can help me to identify which of these women is the mother of Thomas Wilson I would greatly appreciate the help.

There are other things in this file that help identify at least one son of William Wilson b. 1796 in NC and died 1884 in Anderson Co. He is buried in the Wilson #1 Cemetery. James Wilson, who married Dorcus (Dorcas) Lovely was a son of William Wilson b. 1796. I obtained this information from affadavits of Isreal Wilson b. 1842 and James b. 1846. Both men were children of James Wilson b. 1812 and Dorcus. Both men state that Thomas Wilson is their first cousin. If anyone has additional information on the sons of William Wilson I would love to know who they were. One of them is William Thomas Wilson's father. I have searched for a will for William Wilson in Anderson and Campbell County, but have not found one.

Thank you, Debbie Wilson Fehr

My ancestors, Vann's came from Roane County, what used to be Scarboug area/Wheat community. Also been told they lived on Main Street. Need to find out if possible; My gggrandfather Morris 1817, died in 1850 at an early age, do not know the reason, cannot find out. Is there any records
of such, if so where would he be buried and how did he die? Also his wife, Elizabeth King Vann, she died in late 1800s, why and where is she buried. Other record on her would be her father Griffey King, was he Cherokee? My other ggreatgrandmother was Elizabeth Powell Vann, she died around 1903-07, do not know where she is buried. Her husband was Jasper N. Vann, son of Morris and Elizabeth. My latest might be hard to find, my greatest ancestors
Dennis Vann, Dorcus Dickson Vann and Dorcus Vann. Now Dorcus husband was John Isaac Vann, as of 1830 there were records of her in the census, after that don't know when she died or were there any divorce or separation papers on
her from Isaac.

My ggrandfather, Rev. J.W. Miller arrived in Clinton TN in 1849 and remained there until the beginning of the Civil War. I believe he was the pastor of First Baptist Church and according to his letters, he was in charge of an Academy or school that was attached tothe church. I'm trying to find out more about the school and anything else I can about J.W. Miller and his family. According to letters, he left the area with many neighbors and traveled to Kentucky to join the Civil War.

Does any one have any additional information on this school , church or family?

Consaguie Hill Cemetery, Star's Mountain, Monroe County Tn.

While looking on the Internet for Cemetery information I found the table of contents for the Pellissippian, (Volume VII, Number I, 1986-1) made reference to Consaguie Hill Cemetery. I was wondering if you may have the directions to get to this cemetery.
My father's aunt died in 1946 while he was in the Navy and he was unable to attend her funeral. At the time he was on a Mine Sweeper near Japan.
The Funeral Home who took care of her arrangements shows she was buried in Conasauga. I have been to Conasauga Cemetery in McMinn County, and Conasauga Cemetery in Polk County with no luck in finding her grave.
The Funeral Home that made all the arrangements was/is located in Monroe County. Maybe Consaguie Hill is where I should be looking. Please help if you can. I have tried to get directions on the Internet with no luck.
If anyone out there has a listing for Consaguie Hill Cemetery, her name was Mary E. (Burnett) (Weeks) Underwood and she died in 1946. She may be buried next to her first husband who was a Weeks, Wiess or Wiese. We believe his first name was Marion. Her second husband was an Underwood who I am told was buried next to his first wife.....is this crazy or what?
Tabor Chairmakers on the Obed River

Could anyone please help me unravel this mystery. In the book CUMBERLAND COUNTY'S FIRST ONE HUNDRED YEARS published 1956, page 22,"The Tabors from North Carolina . . . .came in 1806. They were chair and wagon makers and they were looking for fine stands of hickory and
chestnut. After passing Graham's Stand on the Obed River, they came to Terry's stand at Black Drowing Creek. They took off up the creek and found what they want at a place still known as Tabor. Here theybegan to produce the sturdy, functionally handsome chairs which thier descendants are still making. . . My question is who are these Tabors? In the back of the book the author gives the "charter members" of Cumberland County. Two charter members are William Tabor
& Eli Tabor listing as coming in 1806. There was a William Tabor, older brother of Eli who was a Revolutionary War Veteran. Indeed he did come to Tennessee in 1806 but to the Elk River in what was for a short time White County but in 1807 became Franklin County. Eli Tabor my gg grandfather came to the Cumberland mountain area sometime
between 1820 & 1830 but he was not a chairmaker? So who are the chairmaker Tabors that settled on the Obed river in 1806???
Jewel Tabor
jltdhs@yahoo.com

Elliott Information-respond to Lynnee314@aol.com please

Hi-
I have hit my "wall" regarding the parents of James W. Elliott. James married a Sarah Rutherford in Anderson County Tennesse on 04/24/1841. (James was born in 1820) According to the 1850 Census records for Anderson County 2nd District, James was born in Kentucky while Sarah was born in Virginia. They had several children and one child was William S. Elliott who was born in 1860. William later married Annie Ruth Rutherford on 03/05/1880 in Anderson County. William and Annie had several children one being Luke Elliott, (b. 1905) my grandfather. My grandfather Luke married P. Bunea Loy and had 8 children. My father is Benny Ray Elliott (of Clinton, not the Lake City Benny Elliott) I have gathered most of my information from the Historical Center in downtown Knoxville. I have been unsuccessful in finding out who James parents were and from what area of Kentucky did he come from. I did find a John C. Elliott age 49 in the 1860 Census who was a blacksmith originally from Kentucky. John was living in the same district with his wife julia and family. My "hunch" is that John may be a sibling to my James. please let me know if you have any information that may help. please e-mail me at: Lynnee314@aol.com Thank you so much.

John Peak Will

I am a ggg grandson of Jacob Peak of Anderson County. I believe that his father was John Peak. I am looking for the will of John Peak. I have received information third hand that he left a will in NE Tennessee. I believe that he died sometime between 1800 and 1810 but it is possible that it is later. The will may have been in the name John Peach or John Peack. Peek and Peake are also possibilities. It was reported to me that the will identified his daughter as Esther Renfo (Renfro/Rentfro). John had two sons in NE Tennessee. Jacob Peak was in Anderson County and Abel Peak in Morgan County in that time frame. I would have expected that he died in Anderson County but records on deaths weren’t kept there until about 1830. Can anyone help me?

I am searching for more information about the Young family who came to Anderson County in the early 1800s. The first settler of the family was Wiley Young, b. in VA in 1773 and d. in 1853 in Scott County, IL. His son, Samuel C. Young, a lifelong resident of Anderson County, died April 2, 1864. According to an article by Katherine B. Hoskins published in the Clinton Courier-News in 1974 and later compiled with others of her articles, Samuel C. Young “was buried in the Young family graveyard, which is located on the river back of the Margrave property on State Highway 61 between Clinton and Oak Ridge.” The river mentioned is the Clinch River.

Does anyone know of this graveyard and if so, who is buried there?
Historical Articles by Katherine Hoskins

In 1974, the Clinton Courier-News published a series of articles about the history of Anderson Country. They were written by Katherine Hoskins, the then county historian. I have gotten a few of these from another source and they are full of valuable information. Does anyone know if the whole collection may have been gathered and published? Or, if not, does anyone have a complete list of all of them (I have only 3, all about members of the Young family) and where copies may be obtained? The Anderson County message board host told me that they were gathered into a book and printed in 1987. Another person told me that the present County Historian might still have some of the books. If anyone can help me run one down, I would very much appreciate it.

Evans, McCarty

I am looking for any info on William John Evans who died in the 1902 Fraterville Mine Disaster. He is buried in Leach cemetery. I beleive he may be the brother of my great grandmother, Mary. Any info on the Evans family in the area of Lake City, Briceville or Coal Creek during that period would be helpful. Also trying to locate M.E. Cemetery in Briceville. It is listed on my greatgrandfather's (Charles McCarty) death certificate

I am searching for info on a MARY E. RUSSELL ...parents, siblings, spouse, children, or anything. She appears on the 1870 Anderson County, TN census within the household of what may be my ancestry, the household of JESSE LETSINGER and his wife SARAH A. I am wondering if she is a child from a previous marriage of Sarah, or maybe a servant girl, or an orphan taken in. I have no clue. Any help would be appreciated. Respond to davidinbigd@hotmail.com with any info.

ROBINSON

My parents were married in Clinton, TN in 1949. They are Frances Montague HUGHES (b. 1930 in Clifton, TN) and Charles Olan (Jr.) ROBINSON (b. 1926, perhaps in Harriman, TN). Both of them graduated from high school in Clinton. My father was an only child. My father's parents were Charles Olan (Sr.) ROBINSON and Bonnie Pauline DEVANEY (b. March 22, 1910, TN). I am trying to find out more about Charles Olan (Sr.) ROBINSON. I do not know anything at all about him, except that he was probably born in East Tennessee. I do know that my father went to visit his Robinson cousins on occasion. This would have been in the 1930's and 1940's. In help at all would be greatly appreciated.
