KENNEDY ( FROM c 1849)

I am researching my maternal line of KENNEDY. I have:

Patrick KENNEDY, born c1812, Co Tipperary, Ireland, died c1873 in Rotherham. His wife Margaret Unknown, born c1816 Co Tipperary, died c 1885 Rotherham. They came to England from Ireland in the years between 1849 and 1854 and settled in the Rotherham area. From research I have traced 2 lines, that of their son Michael's daughter Eliza, and of Michael's son Thomas, but would be grateful for information for Michael's other children - Mary A (1869), Edward (1870), John (1871), Margaret (1873), Michael (1875), Annie (1880) , Eliza (1878), Agnes (1882) Sarah (1883) and my Grandfather Thomas (1888). The areas that they had lived in over the years were Masbrough (Regent St), Kimberworth, and my Grandfathe was born in Aston. I have childhood memories of their having a connection to Swallownest. With ten chldren in the family I would have expected that Rotherham would have had a large number of them . Any help would be welcomed. TIA.

Hello
Edith Allen born 1904 married someone with the surname Athey. Edith died in 1926 so the marriage would have been between 1922 & 1926. I have searched the free BDM records but I cannot find any marriage entry.
In the Moorgate cemetery records it states she was living with her parents Archie & Christina Allen of Truro Place Rotherham at the time of her death.
Does anyone have any info on her marriage?
Thankyou, Peter.
Allen family of Thrybergh Lodge and Swinton/Olaf Allen

My father Austin Allen (b.1882) lived at Thrybergh Lodge in the 1890s with his parents, and later moved to Thomas Street in Swinton, with his widowed mother (c.1901). He was apparently married in Penistone, in 1919. He had a younger brother called Olaf (born about 1883), who got married in Rotherham in the early 1900s. I suspect that my grandfather (Samuel) may have been killed in a mining accident in the 1890s. I'd appreciate any information on the family if anyone can help.
Best wishes,

David

Mop Fairs

Does anyone know if there are any records of mop fairs in the Rotherham area in the late 1850s? I believe that my g-grandmother, Elizabeth CARR (b. Rawmarsh 1851) was sent to a mop fair as a child (she was illegitimate, and presumably her mother couldn't look after her). In the 1861 census she is the adopted daughter of William and Hannah RIDGE of Ecclesfield, so it is possible that they found her at the hiring fair. Elizabeth later married a John DAWSON of Ecclesfield. I'd be interested to know if there are any records of these fairs still in existence.
Thanks.

Goddard & Gothard; Thorpe Hesley & Wentworth

Firstly, thanks to all in RFHS who help me get so far.

I have managed to get the Goddards of Thorpe back via the Gothards of Wentworth to the 1690's. Benjamin Gothard was Churchwarden there in 1699.

I have looked at the Parish records and Bishops transcripts of Wentworth but I am really struggling to read them before then.

Has anyone managed to do this? I might need to see the originals; does anyone know where they are?

There must be more Gothards before 1699 in Wentworth; I can't see Benjamin turning up in 1699 from elsewhere and walking straight into the post of Churchwarden. Interestingly I can't see him before or after as a Churchwarden for some years either side of 1699.
Help!

Rotherham Bishops Transcripts

Could any advice me please.
There is an entry on the IGI taken from the Bishop's transcripts for Rotherham, 1600-1837 Church of England. Parish Church of Rotherham (Yorkshire)
Film/fiche 0919316 which reads Edward SPENCER christened 19 NOV 1815 Rotherham, Yorkshire, England and his sister Jane SPENCER 22 FEB 1818 Rotherham. These are the children of John & Isabella SPENCER. What I need to know is it likely that a place of residence for the parents was given or even the mother's maiden name given, as these are the only matchable entries for my family who live and die in Durham. Edward is on the 1871 & 1881 and gives Rotherham as his birth place but I need a little more confirmation. Edward is back in Durham from 1841. The few Bishops transcripts I have seen give only what the church has entered and usually, at this time, it is very basic facts. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

Can anyone shed any light on the following ? Whilst searching for a Rotherham birth on FreeBMD I noticed the following entries between 1911 & 1927 which all showed the Child's Surname as BUTLER and also the Mother's Maiden Name as BUTLER. To me this would imply that there was a BUTLER-BUTLER marriage, but after searching I couldn't find one. Question, have I overlooked a marriage, or, did one unmarried BUTLER have 6 illegitimate children, or, did 6 unmarried BUTLER's have an illegitimate child each, or am I barking completely up the wrong tree ???

The births in question are :- George BUTLER 1911, Frank BUTLER 1916, Edith A BUTLER 1918, Constance E BUTLER 1923, Joseph BUTLER 1925, Ethel M BUTLER 1927.

Anyone any clues ??

Best regards

Roger Butler

I research my surname worldwide, and while visiting the Arras War Memorial, and the other major ones in Belgium/France recently, came across that of Ernest John Ridgway, Pte.,Essex Regiment 1st.Bn., No.41574, died 14th April,1917.He came from a family of Stone Masons in Maltby, and there were others there in that Occupation. Information will be obtained from the Essex Museum who hold copies of the Regiment's records, and I would welcome any other Maltyby/Rotherham information, or indeed information about other families of this name in the area.

Hi there
I am trying to find information about the Pickering family. I have found them on the 1901 census but wonder if anyone has any more info. There was John Pickering who came from Lancs originally married to Mary who was a pottery earth clay worker. They had a son Charley Pickering who was a miner and aged 17 in 1901. I would like more information on him if possible. He had a sister Rebecca Carnell Pickering who married Charlie Arnott sometime in the early 1900's. Do you have any info on this family.
Thanks
bowlingbelleace

I have had a look on Rotherham FHS Website to see if I can purchase any there, but the church is not even mentioned.

I am looking for baptism of Clara Gent c1887. I cannot find her birth and thought finding her baptism might confirm a suspicion that she was registered as Sara Gent instead of Clara.

I know I can look at the records at Sheffield Archives but that is a little difficult for me to get to.

Christine

I am looking for a picture of 180 Bole Hill in Treeton. My grandmother, Margaret, was born in this house to Annie Cook and James Clarke. James and Annie died at a young age leaving my grandmother's older sister Annie to raise the family( Bill Clarke, Dollie Clarke and Margaret Clarke). Annie (the daughter) remained in the house and married Jim Beeden. They raised their family here and my father can remember visiting them on a Sunday until the early 1960s. If any one can remember this family or knows if this house still exists, I would really love to hear from you.

Cheers

I am currently researching the history of two uncles of mine who died prematurely. The first was called Bertram Thompson (Bertie) who died on 22 Jul 1922 aged 6 years and 11 months from a drowning accident at Aldwarke Lock when he went to play with a toy yacht which my grandfather had made for him. His brother, George (Ginger) died on 17 December 1925 at Parkgate Forge when he was crushed between two trains. He was 19 years old. I would be interested to hear from anyone who recognises these two brothers as family members, or anyone who has any information about the incidents in question.

My ancesters lived in Hooton Roberts for two hundred years 1700-1901+ Their name was Belk. I wonder if anyone could give me any information regarding these ancesters. In the village they worked as carpenters, and wheelwrights. They had strong connections with the church.

I have a grave reference for Moorgate Cemetry (Old Ground) of Z91 and wondered if someone could please go and see if there is a headstone and if so, take a photo for me or at least tell me what is says. It is the grave of Emily Matthews, d. 1.5.1898 - buried 5 May 1898. Thanks, I would go myself but I live on the south coast - a bit far for a day trip!

Sue

I am trying to find information about my Great Grandmother Jane Watson. The 1861 census has her as being born about 1841 in Rotherham. She married Samuel Woodhouse (1837) 31st January 1857 at Sheffield Parish Church, and the marriage cert shows her age at marriage as 19, so this will make her Birth date 1837. The address on the marriage cert shows both of them living at Millsands, Sheffield. On the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891. 1901 census they lived 47 Orchard Street Masborough Rotherham. She died 1929. Has any one got any more information please, ie. her Parents etc

Surton or Turton?

I have a problem. I have Thomas Sorby married to Mercy Surton in the June quarter of 1881 but I can't find a Mercy Surton in the 1881 (or previous) census.

There is however, a Mersey Turton of the same age. Could these be one and the same person? If so, she lived with different Aunts and Uncles in the two previous census but I can't find her mother as she died. Her father William and brother Charles lived together in'71 and '61 census but obviously he could not look after Mersey so left her with relatives until he remarried by 1881.

I would assume that the name on her marriage certificate would be most likely to be the right one but Turton is the family name on all the census.

What do you think? Any advice would be appreciated.

Two John Laws - which is which?

Can anyone out there help me? There are 2 John Laws - both born about 1800, both lived in West Melton. Both coal workers. Both baptising children at the same period. Even both living in the same street.

One of them ( I have him on the 1841, 1851 censuses, according to which he was born in Wentworth) married Sarah (probably Walker, so the most likely marriage is June 1824 in Wath).

The other one married Harriet Beevers, March 1824 in Wath. According to the census he was born at Hoober Hall - which is a farm smack in the middle of Wentworth and Wath.

One of them was born in December 1800 and baptised in Wentworth in January 1801, parents Elias Law and Ann (my 3x great granparents).

PLEASE Can anybody help me work out which one of the Johns is Elias's son. It has driven me potty for about two years now. (It would be a bonus to know who the father of the other one is - but I'm not going to ask for too much.)

Thank you very much!

Hello, Still could not find baptism of John Law who was born at Hoober Hall.I checked the marriages of both Johns to see if I could have any inspiration. I only checked them on the transcripts before and found that The John Law who married Harriet (it is Harriet, it had been wrongly transcribed as Hannah)had witnesses James Hartley and Christianson ?.
The John Law who married Sarah Walker had witnesses John Mirfin and George ? .
Have you found the children of both Johns? I am thinking that one of them could have called a son Elias after his father which would be a clue.
Best Wishes, Maureen Line.

Old Rotherham Photos - Masbrough

My grandfather Willie STEWART was born in 1890 at 3 Court, 1 Masbrough Street, Masborough, Rotherham. We drove there last night for a look. I'm not sure which end of the Street was number 1 and would love to take a photo of whatever is there now or even of the Masbrough Street sign. Would anyone have an old photo of the street taken before the houses were demolished?
The photo request service has been withdrawn from RFHS.
Are there any restrictions and where do I start? Unfortunately, no one in the family is old enough to remember the details

Any advice on this would be appreciated?

Bramley/Wickersley: Thurlbys, Townsends, Burtons and Slades

Just to ask if anyone else is looking at these families, who lived in Bramley and Wickersley?

My family line is Thurlby, and my grandmother's sisters married into these families. None of them, as far as I know, were from South Yorkshire originally. They were, like the Thurlbys, railway families, who very likely ended up in the area because work on the construction of the railway had begung to dry up by the early 1900s, and work in the pits was more plentiful. We have huge amounts of info about the Thurlbys, with a family line going back to 1650 (courtesy of fellow researchers, I can't claim the credit for all the work!), but I know rather less about the more recent generations. Happy to share info with anyone who finds any of these names in their family file.

Kitty.

Can any one help please. I am researching my family who lived in Greasbrough from 1870. John Caunt was born in Brothertoft, Lincolnshire and was living with Mary? born 1849 in Greasbrough. Now comes the confusing part, in the 1871-81-91 census details he has named himself and the family as Clark or Clarke, and then in 1901 becomes Cant again. I can't find birth details for thier children or a marriage for John and Mary. I do know that the family have kept the surname of Cant in later generations.Children of John and Mary were,
George born 1872, Charles born 1878, Ernest born 1880, Rose born 1882, Harry born 1884, Percy born 1887, Annie born 1889 all born in Greasbrough and an Annie born 1869 in Ninchbeck.

His father was William Hague (? b 1854), married to Mary Elizabeth Connor in 1883, and William's father was a George Hague (birth date unknown). All came from the Rotherham area as far as I know. I'm having trouble locating William (have marriage cert and details from Thoms' marriage cert) and thus can't find George either on any census material. Can anyone help? Thanks.

He married 03 May 1808 Wentworth to Elizabeth Pepper, born 1788 Wentworth and died 25 Jun 1835 Wentworth. I don't know who the parents of Elizabeth are, but I think that the parents of John were: John Rawlin, baptised 1754 Wentworth and Mary Pepper, baptised 08 Mar 1754 Wath-upon-Deurne, burried 08 May 1780. I think she ws the daughter of John Pepper, baptised 16 april 1720 Wath-upon-Deurne, burried 28 Mar 1783 Wath-upon-Deurne, married 04 August 1745 Wath-upon-Deurne to Mary Rhodes, born 23 Apr 1727 Wentworth, burried 06 Jun 1803 Wath-upon-Deurne (All Saints). I believe john Pepper's father was Nahaniel, born aroun 1688 Wath-upon-Deurne adn buried 13 Mar 1726 Wath-upon-Deurne (All Saints).
I am hoping someone can help me for I reside in The Netherlands.

turner family tree

hi i am struggling to find my maternal grandmothers family. There is a bit of mystery surrounding her birth name and I have yet to find her birth cert. This is what I know so far:
Her name was Mabel Maud Turner (1894)
She married William Pratt in Middlesbrough 01/08/1914
her father was called Edward Turner.
she does not appear on a census as mabel turner.however i have discovered her mother (ANNIE)remarried a Chas Fowler and she appears on the 1901 census as his daughter living in WINCOBANK SHEFFIED . My mother has books from Lower Wincobank Methodist church presented to her mother as a child.I think Edward Turner died around 1895 .She has a elder sister FLORENCE A TURNER who was sent to live with relatives as a child by Mr Fowler (according to family rumour) So far I have been unable to prove either marriage to Annie. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks Pam

Children's Homes and St. Bede's School

I believe that my father (George Bowman) and his brother (Peter Bowman) were in a children's home in Rotherham in the 1930s. I also believe that my uncle attended St. Bedes Catholic Primary School for a while. My father was 4 years older, and may have attended a different school. Does anybody have any information about Children's Homes at that time? Any ideas who may have this information?
Many thanks.
