I wish this was our Capt. York - at one time we thought it was, however a petition just found in the Library of Congress gives his date of death as 14 Jul 1837; wife - Ailsey Unk.
It seems that Capt. York formed a 'troop of horse' and fought under different commanders and different regiments. It appears to me that he was somewhat of an American patriot 'mercenery'; somewhat like Marion, but on a smaller scale.
As of 1860, his heirs were still attempting to receive his pension, and 'witnesses' were Gen. John Brown and Col. James Blair... the pension was approved when 'papers' from the comptroller's office of N.C. were received.
How do I go about finding these 'papers'?
We have the petition by his heirs but not the original filed by Capt. William York, and so far have not been able to find it. This petition was originally filed prior to 1837 after his pension was refused in Tennessee. This is such an unusual case that I haven't a clue where to go from here.
Is the petition by his heirs alone enough to qualify him for SAR?
Thank you
Diane Stark Sanfilippo
