Of course you can *search* Wikipedia just as you might do a google search or as many who don't care about evidence search family trees on the web.
Citing the results of such a search, however, is unrelated to actual evidence. You might find a reference to a published work to be investigated. If that work gives you leads to helpful evidence, you can cite that evidence in your compilation.
In essence, a web search in itself bears little relationship to evidence, and is no substitute for actual research in records.
