Alfred Stewart Christy, ANC #077211, LA #00953 (Desc. of Major Peter Helphenstine)

I am looking for info on what Helphenstine family Alfred Stewart Christy is connected to. He is listed as a member of the Sons of the American Revolution as a descendant of Major Peter Helphenstine. I believe he died in 1977 in Louisiana, that is the state where he joined SAR. I think he is mother might have been Lucy (or Lucinda) Helvestine and his father was William T. Christy. He may have had brothers named, Thomas K., Arthur T., and William Wallace Christy and they lived in New Orleans.
I think Lucy was born in Virginia and her parents were Theodore and Eliza Ann Helvestin, who were also born in Virginia, lived in Florida in 1850 and then moved to Louisiana where they died around 1901. I am trying to figure out who Theodore's father was and connect this family to the larger Helphenstine family.
Is it possible to obtain his particular application that would have his lineage info? I believe it is too old of an application to be included in the SAR Patriot Index, or am I wrong?

Captain William York

Our family has just discovered some congressonal records that give the data on our ancestor William York. We thought we had him pinned down but this 'proof' turns all our work inside out and backwards!
This now what we not for a fact -
Captain William York b. abt 1755 N.C. (date just a guess) d. 14 Jul 1837 Carroll County Ga.
was 'Captain' of horse troops who fought with different regiments under different commanders. Affadavits were presented by Col. James Blair, a Rev. officer, Solomon Green, a Rev. pensioner, and of Gen. John Brown. It appears that he served at different periods from 1777 to the fall of 1781 as a 'captain of a troop of horse under various commanding officers, and in different regiments.
Additional proof was presents from the rolls of the Comptrollers office of N.C. fully establishing more than two year of service.
This was a petition by his son, Josiah C. York, on behalf of the heirs of Capt. William York for his pension although Capt. York began the petition well before his death. It was finally approve in 1860, but we have no way of knowing if any monies were ever rec'd - and then there was the Civil War.
Josiah was a veteran of the Seminole Indian War, serving with the Tenn. Mounted Gunmen.
I am looking for the service records of Capt. William York and would like to see if anyone has joined the SAR under his service.
With many thanks
Diane Stark Sanfilippo
York family historian

The "political correctness" phrase was a subtle statement
by the writer that compared the rise of Wikipedia and its
compilation by the "unwashed" educated masses, with
the rise of the American democratic process; the creation
of the Constitution of the United States, wherein a society
was ordered by former "unwashed" people, who had the
audacity to believe that the common man could self-govern.
UNWASHED: ignorant, plebeian

WIKIPEDIA continues to be politically correct,
as amended daily. The historical perspective
or context is my mention of the creation of the
Constitution of the United States, which was
made for change, (through an amendment process),
as required by future generations. "The United States
Constitution is the oldest enduring written
national Constitution." So Wikipedia, which
is amended daily, should have a similar future.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/kids/constitution/facts.html
AMENDMENT: The act of changing for the better;
improvement. A correction or alteration, as in a manuscript.

POINT OF ISSUE: There appears a clear usage trend,
indicating Wikipedia will over time, become central to
higher education curriculum and teaching methods,
in all language formats, worldwide.

October 31, 2007 Wikipedia project is a class act
http://www.theage.com.au/news/web/wikipedia-project-is-a-cla...
. . .
[University of New South Wales Associate Professor
Andrew Collins has just completed a 10-week project
with his advanced immunology class, requiring students
to correct errors and fill the gaps in Wikipedia articles
related to immunology. . . .

Universities around the world, from the University
of Hong Kong to MIT to Yale, have run similar
projects for certain courses.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:School_and_university...

The site, now ranked among the ten most-visited
websites in the world, . . .]

The British Library, "The world's knowledge",
among other things, uses Wikipedia directly,
at: The Web Archiving Programme.
http://www.bl.uk/aboutus/stratpolprog/digi/webarch/
"The Web Archiving Programme has been set up to
put in place systems that enable the British Library
to become the point of first resort for anyone who
wants to access a comprehensive archive of material
from the UK Web domain".

My gggggg grandfathers gravestone says "Churchill, Asher died 27 Dec 1839 85Y 7M 27D REV. VET." He was born in Conneticut and died in New York. His first name is spelled Asher/Asahel. I'm wondering if the words "REV. VET." on his gravestone means he was a Patriot in the American Revolutionary War.

SAR Patriot Index look up

I'd like to find out if Jesse Boone,b. ca 1748 d. 8 Dec 1829 in McMinn Co. TN. is listed as a SAR Patriot. He is listed for DAR. He helped his uncle, Daniel Boone, by carrying supplies. His service would probably be for North Carolina.

I have a prospective DAR member who is in need of lineage proof through Jesse's daughter Sarah who married Jonathan Wilson. We believe they had a son Levi.

If Jesse is a Patriot, has anyone joined SAR through his daughter, Sarah? If so, would that application and supporting documents be able to be researched at the SAR Library in Louisville, KY?

It was reported in 1936 by Biddle, that a Rev. War Marker was on the grave of my 4thg-grandfather Werner Leicht(1769-
1831) in Blymire's Cemetary,York,PA. My question is who or what organization would have placed this marker, and would there be any record?
I think Werner would have been too young for this dist-
inction, and his father Adam was supposed to have been in the
Revolution according to a Harford county bio. of his great grandson John Light.I have found nothing other than this bio on Adam Light/Leicht/Leight and the Revolution.
Thanks
Clif Leight

Correction needed, patriot graves listing at www.rsar.org/rosters/findpatr.htm

Thanks very much for this lookup site, I am sure it will be beneficial to many.

I did a quick search on some of my ancestors. Under one, I found that the information was mostly correct (taken from DAR publication), but the **county** where buried is listed incorrectly. I don't doubt that the DAR's listing also is wrong, but it would be helpful for searchers if the site could be corrected:

Jeremiah Rumsey, 1763-1842 who served from CT, widow Aseneth Doud, was buried in Doud Hill cem. (also known as Rumsey-Doud cemetery) in **Tioga County** (Sullivan Twp.) PA, not Warren County.

If this could be corrected on the site that the search draws from, I am sure that some searchers will be less confused by the incorrect County listing!

Thanks for your assistance,
Jade

Dr. Will F. Hunt (1870-1945)

Will F. Hunt was a member of the Iowa SAR. His patriot ancestor was Peter Hunt (1757-1836) from New York. I am trying to discover from which of Peter Hunt's sons this Will F Hunt descended. Will F. Hunt's father was Elmer W. Hunt, b. abt. 1835 in NY (probably Delaware Co.). The patriot, Peter Hunt had sons Jacob, Benson, Ambrose, Peter Jr., William (my ancestor), Hiram. I know Will F. Hunt did not come from William, Ambrose, Benson or probably Jacob. I suspect he comes through either Hiram (b. 1801) or Peter Jr. (b. 1788).

Can anyone help, or suggest how I could obtain this information?

SAR Lookup - Michael Kraemer

I am hoping that somebody can help me with a lookup of a SAR member.

The obituary for my Great Great Grandfather, Michael Kraemer, says that he was a member of the SAR. He was born on January 12, 1846 and died on February 25, 1908. I have no idea which ancestor would have been involved in the war and therefore allowed for Michael Kraemer to be a member of the SAR. Does anybody have access to the SAR's applications or proof or lineage...or do you know how I could research this? Is anybody able to verify that Michael Kraemer was part of the SAR?

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Pam Mix (my Grandma Win was a Kraemer and was Michael's granddaughter)
Married Jemima Hickox in August of 1757.

The D.A.R. says he was a Captain in the Rev. War.
Lookup - Henry Adams-PA 1726-1785

I am trying to find Henry Adams' mother and father. My family tree has been traced back to him and then stops. My tree goes from Henry 1726-1785 to Robert Adams 1753-1810/Thomas Adams 1798-1851/Richard Adams 1819-1890/Ephriam Adams 1844-1911/John Quincy Adams 1867-1936/Mona Eudora Adams Clark 1912-1955/Mona Jean Clark Shiock 1936-2003/to me Andrea Shiock Anthony b.1957.

The information I have is that Henry was a fifer in the Revolutionary War in Capt. John Wagner's Company of the 4th Batallion, Northumberland County Malitia, PA. His son, Robert, served in the 8th PA Regiment, Continental Line. From RootsWeb.com it lists this military service number: BET.Jul 1776-Apr 1779. Robert also served as Westmoreland County Justice of the Peace in 1777.

They were both born near Boston. The information states that Henry and his son, Robert, came to PA via Rhode Island to fight Indians and settled in Huntingdon County. It also states that Henry died in Indiana County, PA and Robert died in Westmoreland County, PA, but I cannot find any records for that information.

My mother, Mona Jean Clark Shiock, was a member of the DAR. She got in under Charles Coleman, however. He was a #360 private in the Rev War, Kent County Maryland Militia, verified by national no. 349218. Ephriam Adams (above) married Emeline Skinner who is a descendant of Charles Coleman.

All records seem to stop at Henry and Robert Adams. Any help in finding Henry Adam's parents would be greatly appreciated. Andrea Shiock Anthony

Bronze SAR marker

I recently visited the gravesite of my ancestor, Ambrose Hoffman in Barren County KY. There was a stone marker with a shield engraved on it. Inside the boundry of the shield was his name, and the words "Posey's Co 1 VA. Troops Rev. War." No dates were given. From his pension papers it appears that the stone may have been requested in 1932.

At the foot of his grave was a bronze marker in the shape of a Maltese cross with the letter S in the top, A on the left, R on the right, and 1775 at the bottom. There was an image of a patriot in the center, and a laurel wreath connected the star's points.

I am curious about the 1775 in the bottom point. I know from his pension papers that he joined 1 Jul 1780 and served until 1 Jan 1782. Can someone tell me about the 1775?

Thanks,
Charlie

I'm hoping you might be able to help me or point me in the right direction. I am researching my mother's lineage and came across the "Decennial Register of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution: 1888-1898." In that register are a Henry Thomas Kent and a Samuel Leonard Kent of Clifton Heights, Pa. (insignia #s 1051 and 1056). They are great grandsons of Lt. William Thompson (1746-1816).

I was wondering if you knew how I could find the lineage between Thompson and the Kents. My grandmother's maiden name is Kent and she lives in Clifton Heights, Pa., we think their brother is her grandfather.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Please help with search on the name of Daniel Beebe.

I have a record showing William Beebe of Nantucket born around 1776 and died in R.I. on 2/22/1864, so according to what I have he probably wouldnt have served in the revolution. However, I have his father listed as Daniel Beebe, born about 1747, married to Lydia Stanton and died before 1796. I have his father listed as Daniel Beebe also (maybe Sr.) and have him born on 12/11/1716 in New London and died 1/22/1775 at sea off coast of Africa. I have his wife listed as Hannah Smith. I have Daniel's father listed as Samuel Beebe, born 1687 in New London, married Sarah Tubbs on May 29, 1710, and died Oct. 7, 1783.
Question regarding SAR markers and tributes

I have Beebe relatives that are buried in Wever, Iowa that I am working on proving direct decendance to Col. George Claghorn of New Bedford (There is a DAR memorial currently in New Bedford, Massaschusetts).

I am also applying membership with SAR and tentatively have found out that membership of deceased relatives is limited. Is there any DAR or SAR policy that would enable me to post a marker to show relationship of my Beebe relatives in Wever, Iowa to Col. George Claghorn? My Beebe relatives in Wever, Iowa start from my great grandfather Charles H. Beebe, Sr. and go back.

I have posted a copy of this in the DAR forum on this site.

Sincerely,
Kevin Mullinix (mothers maiden name Beebe)

DAR ID # 45777 -Help- HINKLEY, Gideon (1730-1796), Lewiston, Lisbon, Brunswick, MAINE

My husband descends from Gideon & Mary (Russell) HINKLEY, a Penobscot Expedition veteran who lived in Maine. I want to apply and get admission to the SAR for my husband, who descends from Gideon Hinkley.

Gideon had a son named Joseph Wooster Hinkley (married to Mary Collier (Coulier ?). I cannot find any marriage or other information on Mary Collier Hinkley. This is my weakest link. I've searched the VR of Lisbon, ME - negative.

I noted some time ago, from Marlene Groves' genealogy of the Maine Hinckley lineages, "Desc. of Samuel Hinkley ..." (1993, Penobscot Press) cites that Gideon Hinkley (pg. 28) is listed in the DAR Patriot Index. I found him listed in these indexes: "Masschsetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of The Rebellion" & "Soldiers, Sailors, and Patriots of the Revolutionary War".

Marlene Groves' Hinkley genealogy also cites: "Maine Daughters of the Revolution, Vol. 16. Misc. Records from gravestones of families of early settlers burind in Lisbon, Maine." Can anyone search this source and and send me the info on Gideon Hinkley ?

Also, there is an old DAR Application for Membership Record submitted by submitted by Gideon's descendent, a Mrs. Lucie Hinckley Weston (Winfield 9, Gideon 8, Samuel 7, Gideon 6, Samuel 5, Samuel 4, Thomas 2, Samuel 1) in the early 1900s. (Vol. 46, pg. 330, DAR ID # 45777).

Can anyone tell me if this application was approved? If so, can I connect my family to this lineage, citing every succeeding generation AFTER her application stops?

Has anyone else in the HINKLEYs of Maine lines, submitted applications for membership from this ancestor, Gideon HINKLEY (1730 - 1790) ???

Are there any databases of descendants of the signers of the Declaration of Independence? Am looking for the descendants of Josiah Bartlett, at least one particular line which includes the name Finney. That is to say he, Bartlett, a signatory, had a descendant who married a Finney. They or their descendants must have lived in Ohio.

SAR look-up request for person with SAR marker

John Valentine Polig of Upper Providence, Montogomery Co., PA has a bronze SAR marker. Attempts to locate him at the national archives have turned up nothing because his name underwent several spelling changes before his death. Known facts: He was born July 1749, he married Elizabeth Fewinger in Montogmery Co., he died Feb. 1813 and is buried at Augustus Luthern Cem. in Trappe, Montgomery Co., Pa. The name started out as Bolich and became the present day Poley. He is listed in 1785 under Captain Arnold Francis in Providence Twp. milita. Since he has a marker under what surname was the paper work filed. Would my husband a direct desc. be able to join under this name today? It is believed a Hiram Poley a cousin in Montgomery Co. may have been the one to get the original paperwork done. Many thanks.

Thomas Hale, b. 1743 in MA

I am a descendant of Thomas Hale, B. Jan 22, 1743 or 1744 in Boxford, MA, D. Jan 2 1834 in Brookfield, MA. He married Ruth Hardy on Dec 1, 1768 in Brookfield, MA. Ruth was B May 25, 1744, D Oct 31, 1828. I have found info that Thomas served in Henry's Mass. Company in American Revolution. He supposedly erved in American Revolutionary army in 1777, lieutenant in 1779. Grandson Nathan Francis Carruth is listed in Sons of American Revolution, I think, but I am not sure if he is listed as a descendant of Thomas Hale or someone else.

Any verification on the above info would be appreciated.
I am looking for any information about this militia. In particular I am researching John, Peter, William and especially Andrew Grant all listed in this milita. These Grants are probably related. The "Savannah News" has listed the Articles of Agreement dated October 22, 1781 and the volunteers by name. Seems the "Articles" were found in the pocket of the Rebel Capt. Grant (one of the named above) who was killed at Great Ogechee in November of that year. This was posted in the Thursday, November 29, 1781 issue of the "Savannah News". Would appreciate any help as I am an amateur. Thanks, Sharon

Oops

Hit the button too quickly.

I am looking for any information on William Adams from Georgia. He received a Headright Grant of 256 acres in Franklin County, GA for service in the Revolutionary War according to records from Georgia. I am trying to find if he actually served in the War of he received the land for other services. I am also trying to tie him into another ancestor. Thank you in advance for anytn help you can give

Steve Adams
Clyde, NC
