Classification: Query
Surnames: Demeter, Metro
I am seeking information of my grandfather's family in his old country, Transylvania/Romania/Austria-Hungary. We do know that there was a change of his surname after his arrival in the US.
According to the 1920 and 1930 US Censuses, he came to the US from Austria/Hungary around 1911. When he came over, supposedly he traveled with at least one brother. The Ellis Island passenger manifest of a Janos Demeter who traveled to the US with a brother Ivan and arrived in June, 1906, from Terebes, has been suggested as a possibility. (Thank you MightHelp!) An excellent one, I think. According to the manifest, these brothers were to hook up with another brother, George, of Watertown, NY, upon arrival. My father remembers his father saying he was from 'Sparta'????
Grandpa was said to have had at least two brothers, but no one is really sure of their names. The names in the Ellis Island manifest fit with the naming of John's children but the arrival date differs from the Censuses by five years. I would like to believe that the name on the manifest was my grandfather. Could the dates differ by this much? Was it common that as time passed, dates weren't remembered as accurately and were changed?
One family story is that Grandpa's brothers moved to Canada, possibly to work as tailors. My grandfather stayed (or was possibly denied entry to Canada for lack of a 'trade'(?)) in the States, finding work as a coal miner for a time. The stories all lack much detail.
Then, sometime between 1920 and 1930, the family moved to Michigan.
Any information about this family would be appreciated. Thank you.
